Something people who don’t sew, create, etc. realize is that most of the time spent is in preparation…matching, cutting, deciding. Thank you Christine.
So true Chris. Ever since doing these videos, and providing my alterations service, I've become more aware of just how much time I spend preparing compared to actual sewing time😀
Agreed! I made a messenger bag from a pattern... took me 4 hours just to interface and cut fabric. I am a relatively new sewist so I move a bit slower. Just trying to make the best bags... and hoping that they sell. ❤
Lovely video, clear instructions as always, they are a lovely bag ,hope they sell well. You are a busy lady ,sewing and making these videos and editing them, plus running the shop and helping with house clearance.Thank you for sharing.
I enjoy watching your videos! You are so creative and practical, and make such beautiful and useful gifts with the abundance of fabric you have! Your big batch sewing techniques are amazing, and you're very efficient with and mindful of your time!
Thank you for all of your videos. You are so generous with your time and knowledge and you are a wonderful teacher. I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you again. ❤
They are fantastic. They aren't all feminine, so even a man could make use of them. I love what you make with these fabrics. By adding the vinyl, it looks more jun es e qua. It just works 😀❤️
I think I like your batch sewing videos the best and I can't wait to make these with my recently acquired stash of upholstery samples! Thank you, Christine! 🌺👍
Great video Christine! Does it take you longer to edit when you’re batch sewing? Always love your videos and like many others, get excited when I see the TH-cam notification is yours.❤ I’ve finally got my cutting table cleared enough so I can actually utilize it and feeling motivated to be in here again. I cut and clipped 10 expandable storage bags while watching/listening to this video. I’m going to try using those little hangers many of the fabric samples come on for the top. Will let you know how that goes. Hugs from Nevada, Cathy❤
Thanks Cathy. Yes, it take a lot longer to edit these types of videos, as I do separate voice overs for the sections that I speed up. I also repeat myself several times when giving instructions which take ages to edit out too. I love putting podcasts or YT videos on when I sew, but can't when recording. It's so good that you managed to get so many bags cut out in one video, and do let me know about the hangers. I'm yet to use them in a project😀
I luv the idea of putting the label over the sticky part. Maybe using baby power over the glue/sticky part will eliminate the label problem. Otherwise I luv your video's, tips and how you overcome problems. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to new creations...
I use the bobbin trick in my Anish Star potholders. I can use any color on the top and bottom. I have different sized caps for my top thread, and frequently use a bobbin there as well. There's a lot of stitching, and starting and stopping. I get a lot of bobbins back. I only need to match thread when I quilt the rows and the binding. 😊
How exciting is it to get all those bobbins back Sharon. I know I always feel like I've had a win with my thread. At least until I need the colour I've just used up!🤣
Beautiful batch sewing project. Thanks for the nice tutorial. p.s. The sticky tape looks like something I would like to learn to use and hopefully it won't gum up the sewing machine. Don't forget that is part of your cost, too. I didn't see it on the list at 40:54. Thanks again. I especially love your channel for the multi-piece production projects. Thanks for the great editing on the video!
Thank you Eve. The tape and anything else I forgot to mention was included in my consumables costs which I add to the labour rate. I did a video recently on the tapes that are ok to use on your machine too. Some are aweful to use and gum up your needles😊
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Thanks for explaining. I'll check it out. Love your assembly line procedures for batch sewing! Not sewing with pins seems so streamlined! I will look at the video of your tape comparisons.
Monumental effort Christine. I’m exhausted just watching you make them. Video editing is also a labour of love. These turned out really well and should sell out. Blunt rotary blades are my Achilles heel too. I’ve got a sharpener tool - but it’s variable depending on blade brand and what’s been cut.
@ ouch, I hope it wasn’t too serious an injury for your mum. Mine healed though it’s numb where cut and the nerves only go to the cut line now. Sewing is less difficult than using the keyboard to type though.
Thank you for another interesting video and your time you give for it. 😘 I have been sewing small bags for many years, so I already knew the sewing technique. However, I am still learning a lot from you. You taught me how to use double sided tape. This makes sewing in zippers so much easier for me. Using labels was also at your suggestion. Your use of upholstery fabric also gave me new inspiration, so that I now have a good (slightly too large😇) stock of it. Some bought on E-Bay and some for free. I have already sewn and sold or given away many sample swatch bags. Sometimes I am very jealous of the wonderfully colorful fabrics you have. I want to reach through the screen and steal some of them. Seems like people in Germany prefer all variations of gray and brown for their furniture. So it's hard to get swatches with beautiful colors and patterns. When I don't have time to sew, I often watch your videos for inspiration and to look forward to upcoming projects. Your voice is so pleasant that I enjoy listening to your videos while sewing. Now I'm looking forward to the next video about your best-selling products of the last three months. Hope you will continue. Hugs and Greetings from Germany❤❤❤
Haha, that's so lovely Sybille. I also see beautiful fabric that others have and think "ooh, why don't I have that!", and aside from the upholstery fabric (which I love to sew), the two most important items for my sewing business have been my labels and double sided tape. My three monthly report is due today, so will film it this morning, and hopefully have it ready this evening. 😀
Love your videos Christine. Try eucalyptus oil for removing sticky glue. I keep it in the house for this purpose and cleaning. I find it a household necessity!
I know it's swings and rounabouts, but to make top stitching your second side by the zipper easier, how about joining your back panel to the base and topstitching after youve top stitched both sides of zipper? Just a thought. I do so love your videos Christine ❤
It's a good thought Alison, and I did consider it, but that would have made the top stitching more difficult when I joined the back fabric to the base.😀
Fabulous tutorial and video. I laughed when you said "just" slide the slider onto the zipper tape! I even bought the one you recommended but I still can't do it. It's not going to beat me though. Thank you for this one, as usual.
I love it that you're getting free fabric! I've just discovered you lately and your videos are clear with instructions and measurements. Thanks for including inches, too. Not all of us use metric!
Christine, you did a wonderful job of color coordinating those upholstery fabrics with the vinyl. And I love that pansy fabric. You are so right about the Dritz double sided tape. It is the first and only kind I have used. When you would say how easy it was to remove the paper tape from the double sided tape, I was so frustrated at my ineptitude at removing it. @@ChristinesHomeAffairs BTW, thanks again for sharing Chris’ link to his Channel (a while ago). We subbed and have enjoyed the Farm series. Especially moving the WAGON recently. That was exciting!
Another great instructional video on bags. I love your colour coordination, matching vinyl to upholstery fabric. I have used those faux leather labels myself and found putting double sided tape on the back holds them in place, but my problem was stitching around the label in a way that gave equal distance from the edge on all 4 sides. Often coming to a corner I was a bit too far away to pivot, and if I took one more stitch it would place me too close to the edge. Do you have any tips on this? 🙂🇨🇦
Thanks Barbara. I also found that putting the DST on the back was helpful, and the vinyl foot. That really made a difference. As for the stitch length, I've seen some people raise their foot and move the label back or forth to enable a full stitch to be completed at the end. Does that make sense? I'm fortunate that my machine has a half stitch and a quarter stitch, so I can use that to make smaller stitches.... Oh wait! You could sew almost to the end, then reduce your stitch length, turn the corner, with normal length, then reduce at the end again and so on. Tedious I know, but all I could come up with😀
Thanks, Christine. I did use the method of dialling down the stitch length as I approached the corner and you’re right, it was tedious. I only have a few labels left, so once they are gone, I think I will order metal ones.
Thanks Heather. I do have an Amazon link as well. It's near the bottom where the USA link is. I haven't created the store yet though as it's new to the Aussie site😁
I’m sure you have tried it but I got all the paper off my samples by ironing, I just peeled the paper off while still hot and the glue came off with it.
If only it were that easy Tina. Using the heat press is always my first step, and has been the most successful so far, however some companies use glue that wont release with heat, or by any other means. Cutting is always my last resort.🙂
You make attaching sliders so easy. Unless the quality of continous zip in Aus is superior to ours that is available in Zambia, Africa. I really struggle. And have to tug away at the ends, Sometimes the zipper frays somuch I have to recut ends to straighten them up. Any suggestions, I would really appreciate thankyou
It sounds as though wages are a little higher there than Canada, but possibly costs too for some materials? There's an ocean between you and some of your suppliers I'm guessing?
If you put those swatches in a hosiery bag, would that keep the gooey paper bits from getting all over the machine and other clothing? I do know what you're facing with that goo. I had 3 little girls who loved stickers. Inevitably, a few would be overlooked and go through the wash. If they made it through the wash, I would have a bright pink Barbie sticker staring at me inside my dryer! Oh what a pain, but not as bad as a missed crayon! Oh my goodness, what a mess!😂
I've tried washing them in an enclosed pillow slip Sharon. I managed to get a lot of the paper off, which left flakey bits all over the inside. Unfortunately the fabric ended up with flakey bits all over it as well everything getting frayed and tangled. It was the most successful method I've tried, but also the messiest. I sat on the lawn out in the back yard removing all the bits from the swatches😀
Yes, that would be the perfect solution Tina. Unfortunately one side had staple holes in it, whilst the other side had a big adhesive label on the back. It makes the fabric stick to the machine. The side with the holes was the better side of the vinyl in this instance🙂
