Cessationism 3 (Has Prophecy Ceased?) | Daniel Kolenda: Off The Record

  • In this episode of Off The Record, Daniel Kolenda continues his series on "The Heresy of Cessatioism" asking the question in part 3: "Has the gift of prophecy ceased?"
He examines the differences between Old Testament and New Testament prophecy showing why the cessationist critique of modern prophetic ministry misses the mark.
He argues that cessationism's strict standards do not align with the nuanced understanding of prophecy presented in the New Testament. Most importantly, he challenges the idea that all prophetic activity ceased after the apostolic age, emphasizing the ongoing importance of God's guidance and revelation in the lives of believers.

Wow! What confirmation the Lord is giving me through your teaching! Over the past summer, I was watching a movie where the teenage son was listening to a voice recording of his late father and pretending to speak to him through it and I felt so heartbroken for him and the Lord spoke to me and said this is what so many of my children are settling for and I never meant the Bible to be a one size fits all pre-recorded message but rather a living word that the Holy Spirit brings life to for each individual heart to personally know Me! It's like He even let me feel a twinge of His grief over it and it was beautiful to know how much God truly wants to personally speak to each and every believer through His word ❤️ I even posted about it on Instagram. Of course i have no following 😆 but it felt important to share even if not many would be reading it right now besides results belong to God and if we're not faithful with a little... 🤷🏼‍♀️
You're the first person I've heard speak so confirming of what He spoke to me that day. I'm sure others have as well I just haven't heard them yet but I knew God said it that day to my ❤

I have been so very blessed by this teaching! I’m a born again believer of less than 2 years and I’m thankful my church embraces the spiritual gifts. I’m part of the prophetic ministry there and I have no doubt God speaks to believers as a result. I’ve been told things about me that not even my husband knows. But God knows all and prophecy is a confirmation that He does. How important is that to those who think God doesn’t see them or care!

What saddens me the most about cessationists is many recognize present-day, demonic manifestations of spirituality. It's like their faith is in the demonic while the Holy Spirit is silent in hand cuffs.

Interesting that there are Christians who spend their time figuring out what God won’t do, instead of what he will do. In effect, I don’t even know if I can call them believers, because everything about this shows unbelief.

Fantastic series of videos, thank you! I'm reading Michael Brown's Authentic Fire, and am blessed by you both. For me it's as simple as reading about how all should desire to prophesy and speak in tongues in 1 Cor. 14:5, then simply backing up a few pages and reading who the book was addressed to: not only to apostles, but "to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with ALL WHO IN EVERY PLACE CALL ON THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, their Lord and ours" (1 Cor. 1:2). Boom. MacArthur has to perform some incredible gymnastics to get around the plain truth of Scripture.

Great series. This episode, I think, is the best one yet.
You left out that often the big name OT prophets would prophecy across *generations* (Daniel, Isaiah, etc), and there would have been no one in their own day to judge whether what they predicted came to pass or not. Yet, cessatoinists would have you believe that they should have been stoned to death under the Deuteronomy passages discussed.

      @countbless3360 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Here is an even more excellent quote from Spurgeon sermon titled “The Paraclete” on October 6, 1872.
Dear Brothers and Sisters, honor the Spirit of God as you would honor Jesus Christ if He were present! If Jesus Christ were dwelling in your house, you would not ignore Him; you would not go about your business as if He were not there! Do not ignore the Presence of the Holy Spirit in your soul! I beseech you, do not live as if you had not heard whether there were a Holy Spirit. To Him pay your constant adorations. Reverence the august Guest who has been pleased to make your body His sacred abode. Love Him, obey Him, worship Him!
Take care never to impute the vain imaginings of your fancy to Him. I have seen the Spirit of God shamefully dishonored by persons-I hope they were insane-who have said that they have had this and that revealed to them. There has not, for some years, passed over my head a single week in which I have not been pestered with the revelations of hypocrites or maniacs. Semi-lunatics are very fond of coming with messages from the Lord to me and it may save them some trouble if I tell them once and for all that I will have none of their stupid messages. When my Lord and Master has any message to me He knows where I am and He will send it to me direct, and not by mad-caps!
Never dream that events are revealed to you by Heaven, or you may come to be like those idiots who dare impute their blatant follies to the Holy Spirit. If you feel your tongue itch to talk nonsense, trace it to the devil, not to the Spirit of God! Whatever is to be revealed by the Spirit to any of us is in the Word of God already-He adds nothing to the Bible, and never will. Let persons who have revelations of this, that, and the other, go to bed and wake up in their senses.

I love this series and your example of your Bible school president. Another fundamental question to ask cessationists whether God still speaks is, "If they pray?" If they do, they fundamentally assume that He still speaks. Even apart from what they think prayer is, the Bible assumes that God speaks through prayer. Hence, the Psalms is loaded with examples; see the following small sample in Psalms 4:1; 86:6-7; 116:1; 118:21; 143:1-7. Cessationism in no way, shape, or form is a biblical doctrine because it is self-refuting and undermines the Bible itself. If one believes in cessationism, one must accept fundamental premises contradicting Scripture and redefine how God interacts with His people. This is, frighteningly, a different god and, therefore, a doctrine of demons (1 Tim. 4:1).

Prophecy went on in the NT Church and Paul never thought of it as a threat to the Canon of Scripture. For instance, God spoke to believers on their missionary journeys in Acts to direct them to the most fruitful place for ministry. One thing I notice is that when the Bible records the phrase "the Holy Ghost said" it does not identify a particular CHAPTER and VERSE of the WRITTEN scriptures.

Such a great piece, man of God. You are such a blessing to the Body of Christ. God bless you!
Please do an episode about "The closure of the canon of Scriptures". Did Jesus (and the Apostles) have an idea of the Bible (of 66 books) supposedly gagging God from speaking anymore?
Secondly, how different are Paul's apostolic claims from anyone today who can claim that they have had an encounter with the risen Lord Jesus, since Paul's testimony was just as subjective? On the same breath, whose name do you think it is that is/will be inscribed on the foundations of the New Jerusalem - Judas', Paul's or Matthias'?

While you are waiting for Damiel, allow me to offer some comments:
Jesus never came to make a whole bunch of branches (enominational) of His Church.
But the Devil comes to mess up mess up what God established through His Son.
Jesus said if a house is dvided against itself, that house will not stand.
So what does the devil do? He sekks to divide what God intedned to be unified. And he has dome this by getting some people to not believe some Scriptures and build a following on just those points. Then he also twisted scripture to the minds of some believers and so another variation of 'doctrine and become the foundation for ANOTHER 'church.
this has been multiplied countless times.

The gift of prophecy is listed in 1 Cor 12 & 14. Nowhere in those chapters says the gift of prophecy has ceased. I do not think many in the church know what this gift is used for. Agabus prophesied a famine. He also warned the Apostle Paul. Do we not need that today? If I prophesied a famine in 2 years, does that violate the word of God? NO!! This gift is also used to encourage other believers. Philip's daughters were prophetesses. This does mean they only taught children as some teach.
Please do not mess with the ministry of the Holy Spirit. There are 9 gifts of the Spirit not 6. There is NOT one verse in the NT that states these gifts will cease. The verse cessationists use in 1 Cor. 13 is taken out of context. Tongues we will cease when we receive our glorified bodies like Jesus. That is the "perfect".
Please read Mark 16. The gifts FOLLOW those that believe and preach the Gospel.
If someone does prophesy, test that prophecy. The test is does it come to pass. We do not test the prophecies of Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel. Those prophecies are guaranteed to come to pass. We believe those prophecies, not test.
Finally, those who use the gift of prophecy do NOT introduce new doctrine. The doctrines are set in the Bible. If someone prophesies, does it come to pass or does it violate the doctrines of the Bible?
It is amazing to see the leaders in churches removing verses from the New Testament like it is no big deal. When is the last time you heard a sermon on 1 Cor 12 or 14? Likely never. Sad and blasphemous. If you do hear a teaching on 1 Cor. 14, it is likely taken out of context or watered down.
    God bless.

Preachers use the Old Testament to give prophetic messages.
The main difference is the new coveanut,it is a better coveanut that contains the reality of God's gift to mankind.
The old Testament or coveanut was mainly a prophecy of the coming of Christ, far deeper than is apparent.

  • @johnmoore3521
    @johnmoore3521 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

When it comes to the prophetic, we have to consider the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
If the Holy Spirit urges a person to speak, the Word will be proprietary with God's Word.
Generally it will be a Word for those who have oversight in the purposes of God,or a group who needs to hear a word .
Prophets can warn others in Spiritual matters about a evil that has made it way into a group.
Prophets can be told to stay silent until such time that pleases the Lord.
We can hear the voice of God,himself.
For some this could be once in a lifetime,or on different times.
God is Father,Son,and Holy Ghost, yet still God.
We can discern what part of God is speaking to us.
The auidable voice of God is unmistakable, and contains all knowledge pertaining to what He wants,or what has greatly troubled you.
Some Prophets recieve knowledge by instant revelation, others have visions.
Most Prophets will not say anything about their calling, unless someone has recieved knowledge from a Prophet and knows only God could know what they were told.
A word from God is often in question form.

Revelation 11:3-12 gives a description of two chosen who are sent by God for His work during the tribulation: “I will appoint my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth”.
When such a thing happen, these cessassionists would call them as false prophets for they don't fit within their doctrine. There is a possibility that these ignorant cessassionists could even be part of killing them eventually.

Thanks brother Daniel! I have a question. Thinking about those who prophesy and they know in their hearts it’s not from God (because they know, I’m pretty sure about that). Have they just lost the fear of God? Are they not afraid of the punishment? Because the Bible says a lot about false prophets.

The classic case is Num 11:26-29 where Joshua is threatened by the loss of Moses' “accreditation” by the prophetic Spirit.
Moses replies, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish all the Lord's people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit on them!”
The subsequent OT prophets foresaw an ideal time when the Spirit would be bestowed broadly upon all categories- of humanity (Joel 2:2829, cf. Acts 2:17-18, 21, 39). Similarly, Jesus refused to stop those who cast out demons in his name, though not directly associated with him (Mk 9:38-40//Lk 9:49-50). No doubt this logion was recorded for the Church in response to exorcists, or perhaps those exercising spiritual gifts generally, who were not only not apostles, but not even church members! At that point the “accrediting” function of miracles becomes a little thin. Paul prays for “all the saints [Jew and Gentile]” that they might experience gifts of revelation, knowledge and power [dunamis] at the level of resurrection power that Jesus experienced (so also, 1 Cor 12:6; 14:1, 5, 24, 39; Gal 3:5, 14; Eph 5:18; Col 1:9-14, etc.). Against cessationism, then, this brief sketch shows the biblical (and divine) impulse to offer the power of the Spirit to all who would respond to it, rather than limit it to a few founders of the Christian community whose status must be enhanced.

For as they continue to teach all these gifts have stopped, are they not adding to the Word of God their own nonsense? Just as Thomas Jefferson had a 'Bible' sans miracles they could eventually come up with a similar one.

Biblical prophecy is the utterance of the knowledge of God.
    Prophecy and tongues:
"If come speaks in a (unknown) language, let it be by two or AT THE MOST BY THREE and in turn, and also let one interpret. And if there be no interpretor, let him be silent in the assembly; and let him speak to himself and to God, And if there be two or three prophets, let them speak, and let the others discern." 1 Corinthians 14:21-
AGABUS: Did he get it wrong?
    No.
Go to 2 Samuel 11. There we read the account of David's lust and adulterous activity with Bathsheba the wife of one of David'selite trooos. Bathsheba became pregnant by David. David tried to get Uriah the husband to go lie with his wife wbut he refused on principle.
David then sent Uriah to the front lines of the battle via Orders to Joab. Uriah was killed in battle.
God sent Nathan to David. And that well known prophetic utterance by Nathan was spoken - "YOU ARE THE MAN".
God charged David with killing Uriah by the sword. But the literal reality was that Uriah was killed by the Ammonites.
So why was David charged with the murder of Uriah?
    1. David wanted Uriah dead. God knows the heart of all and David was more accountable than all other Israelites, beause hw as given the greater honour.
    2. David ordered the death of Uriah.
This made David fully guilty of Uriah's demise.
The one who gives the orders is repsonsible for those orders being carried out.
If we go to the New Testament to Mark 6:14. John the baptist is beheaded. Herod says of Jesus - "this one is John, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead."
But Herod did not actually cut John's head off. It was the executioner of the court of Herod who had done it. BUT HEROD HIMSELF realised that because he had given the roders for John's death, he himself was the one who beheaded John - again herdon murdered John in his heart. That thought became an action. He was fully guilty.
Here again we see the truth that the one who gives th eorders is responible for the outcome of those orders.
With Agrabus adn his prophecy concerning Paul being bound and the Jews would give him over to the Romans. Acts 21:7-15
Paul said that he was ready not only to be bound but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus v13.
The phrase "in this way" is houto /houtos in Greek 3779. this phrase does allows for a similar kind of even, not necessarily an re enactment of the event. It means - 'in like manner', 'along this line'' as well as meaning exactly like this.
The main points are that Paul would be bound (aprehended) by the Jews, handed over to the Romans. - Gentiles.
These things happened to Paul. Just because the exact same details are not recorded does not mean that Agabus got it wrong. If you really believe that then youa re alleging that Agabus was lying by saing "The Holy Spirit says these things".
Agabus did not lie. Just like David did not kill Uriah with his own hands. and just because Herod did not kill John with his own hands, does not annul the fact that both David and Heron were guilty of murder.
God never makes a mistake. It is we who think we have it right when we don't fulkly understand. Agabus did not miss the mark in the proiphecy.
Peace to all those in Jesus Christ.

I recalled a non- Christian family who had one member who was diagnosed with a terminal illness coming to our church and asked for prayer. One member who thought they were hearing from God prophesied " you shall not die but live and declare the word of the Lord"

The apostle John was the last prophet and Jesus showed him what will happen in the end when he wrote the book of Revelation. We have all the prophesy we need in Gods Word. The spirit of prophesy is the testimony of Jesus. The end is written. What else is everyone looking for?Today, most people in church want their ears tickled and they want to seek out a “prophet” that has words of encouragement and a cold reading. Don’t get me wrong it’s nice to be encouraged but don’t speak for God if He doesn’t say anything. Instead read His Word. A message for today’s “prophets”: a broken clock is correct 2 times each day.
