Cessationism 5 (Gifts of Healings) | Daniel Kolenda: Off The Record

  • In Part Five of "The Heresy of Cessationism”, Daniel Kolenda looks at the gifts of miracles and specifically healing. Daniel shows how much of what cessationists claim to show that the gift of healing has ceased is based on extra-bliblical assumptions. He then offers a more Biblical perspective on what healing was like in the early church.

I suffered for 5 years of diverticulitis infections, every year i would end up in hospital for 5 years, and demonic attacks along with it,and heart problems, attacks in my sleep, would wake up gasping for air, with demon faces as i woke up,even full on demons manifesting to me,got bunch of prayers.. would see others healed of things, but not me,i questioned why, God began to speak to me that he was doing a bigger healing in me, healing me from fear, worry, doubt, teaching me long-suffering..exct..he was healing my emotions,by allowing sickness in my body..one day holy spirit highlighted this scripture to me.john:1:2,he desired for me to be in good health and prosper as my soul prospers..also the story of the 10 leapers were healed physically, but one came back to Jesus and was made whole..inner healing..of our heart and minds.

2 Corinthians 12:7 even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.
2 Corinthians 12:8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away.
2 Corinthians 12:9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
2 Corinthians 12:10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Not sure if you were in Zambia recently but I think my mum heard that you were and she brought my twins to your conference when you went about preaching in the communities. My twins enjoyed themselves and she said you prayed for them. I am in America, I am asking for prayers that my kids join me sooner than later so we can do all that God has planned for us in this land. I miss them so much. They turned 5 yesterday. This is my earnest prayer and it will be a miracle for me to have my sons with me.

When my son was just a brand new baby, I was suffering from a very stiff neck. To the point where I could barely even move my upper torso. I even had to go to the emergency room at a given day because I just couldn't take the pain. They prescribed medication and advised me to sit under a heated lamp and/or apply a heating pad. I just didn't know what to do. I couldn't even carry my baby. But that night the pain was excruciating. I kept thinking, how am I going to take care of my baby? That evening my husband was trying to help me as much as he could. The baby fell asleep and then my husband had to help me get in bed. My husband had to go to work the next morning. While I was laying down all I did was pray in my mind, "please God, please heal me, God. Please help me. I can't take care of my own baby. My husband has to go to work." (Although I knew that he would stay if he needed to but I didn't want him to have to miss work.)
I was in that prayer mode, laying there in the dark for maybe half an hour. My husband had fallen asleep already.
When all of a sudden, I was pushed from behind. My body went into a sitting position in a supernatural way. I was so startled I screamed! But I started screaming hallelujah, hallelujah. I'm healed, I'm healed. Thank you Lord, thank you Jesus! My husband awoke and also screamed. What's the matter? What's happening?Of course, the lights were off so he couldn't see what was going on or that I was even now in a sitting position moving my head vigorously left and right. He thought someone had come into our bedroom. We were living in the city of Chicago. He thought a burglar had gotten into our apartment. I happily reassured him, no, honey, it's okay, God has healed me, God has healed me. I was crying and filled with so much joy and gratitude. I explained to him that I felt that someone pushed me in a sitting position on the bed. It was the Lord's doing. This happened in 1991. Praise the Lord! He is a miracle working God! My neck is still great!

I got to be part of a group that prayed for a hospital in Africa.... the whole hospital was released later that week. It was a TB hospital.... easier to have faith for what you cannot see.... we also went to a burn victim hospital where there were loads of children missing large portions of their skin. I don't think anyone was healed... we all went home with a heavy heart. We will be seeing the greater works soon.... right after major persecution starts. Seek first the kingdom of God... Matt 6:33. The kingdom of God is not that of words but that of power... 1 Cor 4:20... The kingdom of God only comes through much persecution... Acts 14:22.

Many things that I've noticed with Cessationists, Reformed, and Calvinists is that they want it to match up "word for word, to the letter", which is a manifestation of the religious spirit. We are not to take Scripture by the letter, but by the Spirit, which means "by the message/idea" that is being put forth/portrayed in the passage.
But then they ofcourse reject the idea that they have a religious spirit, and some even deny that someone can be manipulated/controlled by a different spirit other than the Holy Spirit when that person is a Christian. They have no idea that their underlying religious beliefs say that they cannot sin due to having Christ. They fail to realize that in order for anyone to sin, they have to fall for temptations, which opens them up to those spirits. So thus they're saying that they never sin or fall for temptations because they have Christ; thus they're saying that they're better than everyone else (remind of you the Pharisees much?).

If I had to believe I had to gather enough people without any doubts to pray for me to be healed, I would never be healed. Lots of people profess faith, but they have no faith. Healing is a result of obedience to repent. For children, it's a matter of their parents repenting. God manifests healing through those he chooses. If you are spirit filled. I've prayed just in faith God would heal someone, and he healed them. I pray for my own healing and receive it. You simply need to step out and do what Jesus said to do. Ask for the Baptism in the Spirit. Get out of churches that deny the Spirit.

Thanks for making it clear that Cessationist understandings are all over the place on this issue and are certainly not aligned with scripture. It amazes me that cessationists don't look at their beliefs and realise that they are premised on unbelief. God doesn't do this, God can't do this, this is not for today. This is the word of someone else, not the word of God where Jesus teaches that Mark 9:23 is the reality. And we have a God with whom Luke 1:37 is said. Or Matthew 7:11 is the teaching. Or regarding the Holy Spirit and his gifts Luke 11:13. How is it that they can say "it's not for today"?

Why would we be preoccupied with preserving the flesh. It is indeed what separates us from our heavenly presence with God. Even so, it sounds like God desires all to be healed, but yes indeed solely that He may be glorified. God sovereignly acts with healing upon those according to His good pleasure. John Newton, the writer of the words to the great hymn Amazing Grace, wrote "I was blind and now I see". How do you define healing? John Newton was never physically blind, yet would admit to his spiritual blindness. A miracle, by nature is extraordinary, unusual and uncommon. The more common miracles become, the less they can be defined as a miracle, since they are now common. Beware of those who would claim a healing in order to bring profit and attention to themself. Likewise in salvation, God sovereignly chooses according to His good pleasure those whom He will save. Even so He desires all to be saved. 1TI 2:1-4

I don’t believe in healing. In times past God worked in the outer man, blessing nations and individuals in hope of drawing the world to themselves. But that was before the Holy Spirit was given full time to believers. Now, God is working through the inner man. Our testimony is not “look, world, how God is blessing my outer man with health and prosperity.” Our testimony is the “peace that passes understanding” as we cope with every travail that plagues this fallen world.

Do you interpret tongues? If you don't, do you know someone who does and would they or you be willing to objectively either prove or disprove this gift? How is this possible? Here's how: Simply make a YT video of someone (maybe yourself)speaking in tongues. Then immediately make a second video interpreting the tongues. Then wait a week and make a third video where you play back the tongues video from the prior week and in the same video interpret it. Your interpretation, if legit, will match the interpretation video from the prior week. The Bible tells us to test the spirits. Couldn't get a more objective test and many eyes on one side or the other will be opened. Or closed....

Saying that healing should be permanent is setting a standard not even Jesus held to, for example the man at the pool, Jesus heals him and later tells him to sin no more or else something even worse will happen. We can’t say that healing has to be permanent. Also to say that the healing needs to be permanent concedes that there was a miraculous healing to begin with even if it is temporary.

"In the New Testament when someone with the New Testament gift of healing used His gifts, the results were complete, immediate, permanent, undeniable, every kind of sickness, every kind of illness." No. Not even Jesus could do that:Mk 6:5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. Mk 8:22-25 Then He[Jesus] came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him[Jesus], and begged Him[Jesus] to touch him[Blind man]. So He[Jesus] took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when H[Jesus] had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him[Blind man], He[Jesus] asked him[Blind man] if he saw anything. And he[Blind man] looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.” Then He[Jesus] put His hands on his[Blind man] eyes again and made hi[Blind man] look up. And he[Blind man] was restored and saw everyone clearly.

How is it that this is saved for church meetings and its just gifted to a handful of men that use this gift to fleece the sheep and line there pockets. Yugh. And then we move on to christains being delivered from demons and for the same reason as stated above. Im of the school is as we go out to win the lost then its likely you would see theses gifts in operation. So in a mega church inviroment this has been turned into a glory seeking show.

Kolienda slipped up. He said "God forbid" that he is putting the miracle power of today on the same level as the miracles by the Apostles. He is muting God's own power with no scriptural basis; in fact it SHOULD be the opposite. Bro you went THIS far, go for the jugular. Jesus said ANYONE with faith can do the same works and greater. You have just said the Holy Spirit doesn't outdo Himself from previous miracles. Paul used a handkerchief. Have you not heard that John G Lake used a tree? Christians should be healing at an exponentially higher level than the first century because the Holy Spirit does the work. You just said we can't even touch the Apostles. That's apostle worship. come on man. Don't relent. Yes we can do greater things than they did based on John 14:12 and history.

I know we do not chase after miracles. BUT, they should follow us as we are active serving the Lord in our daily walk. Jesus said these signs shall FOLLOW them that believe. They shall speak with new tongues, cast of devils, lay hands on the sick and they will recover, and if we pick up something that is deadly such as false doctrine it will not harm us. The use of gifts in the service have been replaced by programs. Man-made programs. It is amazing to hear what the Lord will give rewards for. The Lord will give rewards to them that believe Him. I am sorry to say many churches have created their own brand of Christianity that has NO power. Jesus shows us in Revelation 3 that the last part of the church age will be lukewarm. I admit to being lukewarm in my Christian walk. It is a sick feeling. It is a daily walk of faith or trust in ALL the word of God. Amen.

I did not get condecending or arrogance. Daniel has a perspective on a nonessential part of christianity. It has truth in it and so do other people's perspectives like RC Sporul. Agreeing or disagreeing doesnt cancel you from heaven. Not having Jesus as your savior and believing He died on a cross for our sins and was raised from the dead also keep the ten commandments. That is the essential part. The rest is interpretation. Punching a fellow christian in the face is not biblical. What I have seen, is complete nastiness, from the people who do not agree with Daniels pidcast. I think they missed the point of. Christianity.

Preach as many sermons on godly character, loving the poor and needy, showing hospitality, conviction of sin, sharing the gospel - as Jesus and the apostle Paul focused on - as you do about the gifts of the Spirit, and you will begin to have some cessationists (of which I am not one) at least willing to acknowledge your 'biblical insight'. It's shameful to see the love of money and status, lack of godly character, the boasting, that is rampant amongst charismatic leaders. Repent, and begin teaching the commands of Jesus. Even Jesus did not heal everyone. When he went into the pool, there was only one that's recorded that was healed; and also it tells us that Jesus obviously did not just heal anytime he chose to because in Luke 5:17 it says that when Jesus was teaching that the power of the Lord was present for healing, which obviouslymeans it was not always present. We also know that Jesus said he doesn't do anything unless he sees the Father first doing it, which means He was not just rubbing around doing whatever He wanted.

The point in these verses in Matthew 7:21-24 is NOT the misuse of the gifts; although we should all seek to be led by the Holy Spirit and move only as the Father directs. However, just like anything we do for the Lord should be led by the Holy Spirit; but yet any believer could mis-teach or mis-speak out of a zeal for the Lord, or because of spiritual immaturity and Jesus is NOT going to send them away for those reasons. Matthew 7:21-24 is talking about people that do NOT really know Him but are doing works in His name. They are religious people who may know a LOT about Him, but they have no personal relationship with Him; they are not walking in His power and therefore have a form of Godliness but are denying His power to change and transform them, thus they walk in lawlessness and even their good deeds and works are done in the flesh and are like filthy rags! But while they confess Him as Lord, they don't REALLY KNOW HIM!@@theostehle9337

JESUS Heals 100% of the time whether or not the sick person has faith! While faith is the means through which healing is received and is therefore important, the reason why Jesus heals is primarily because He loves people. So it's possible for someone to get healed even where their individual faith was not involved because of the Love of God! Also, Faith is needed for healing, but it doesn't have to come from the sick person. It can come from someone else. Jesus can heal a sick person on account of their loved one's faith, in the same way that you can buy coffee on account of someone else's money. Money must be there, but the one drinking coffee doesn't have to be the one with the money. It can be on someone else's bill. Similarly, Faith must be present, but the sick person doesn't have to be the one with faith. Faith can come from someone else on behalf of the one being healed, and they will still be healed.

The thing I think Cessationists need to grasp, here, is that God is not a “cosmic genie.”
The reason why Continuationists/Charismatics don’t go around healing everyone is because we can’t treat God’s work through His servants like some kind of divine Pikachu we can throw in a Pokeball at sickness and say “I choose you.”

  • @guojing88
    @guojing88 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Since Israel was formed at Mount Sinai, sickness and disease was always punishment due to disobedience and unbelief but that was under the Law
Under the Law, God literally promised Israel that if they obey him, they will never fall sick (Deuteronomy 7:15, Exodus 15:26)
Under the promised kingdom of heaven on Earth, no one in Israel will be maim or sick too (Isaiah 33:24, Psalms 103:1-5).
Israel broke their covenant of Law that was given at Mount Sinai. They killed or ignored all the prophets that God repeatedly sent to them when they were separated into 2 kingdoms and went into captivity under Babylon, and then under Persia. (Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19).
Thus, at the time of Jesus's first coming to Israel, many people in Israel are sick, demon possessed, precisely because they have forsaken that Law covenant. (Luke 13:11, Acts 3:2)
Jesus thus healed all of them to give them a sign that he was indeed the promised Messiah (John 20:30-31, Luke 7:19-23. Luke 4:27).
Acts 10:38 is an especially beautiful summary by Peter to show that
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
But now, God no longer relates to us under the Law (Romans 6:14, 1 Timothy 1:9).
So when we believers are sick nowadays, we can be rest assured that it is not because we have disobeyed God in anyway.
Conversely, if we find ourselves getting better, it is NOT because we are currently doing something that pleases God.
That is what I believe Paul is teaching us now when he shared with us Romans 8:18-25 and 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, and when he gave Timothy common sense advice regarding his frequent stomach aliments.

And also that there are more atheist there therefore GOD will be willing to heal them more to save them but here in Africa many have come to know GOD and are full of unbelief (that was when I thought healing was conditional rather than the Finished works of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST).
Until I heard from Reinhard Bonnke and Daniel that others also thought it was easier and frequent here in Africa than abroad. Then I knew that was the thought of the devil.

How Cessationists differentiate THE GIFT OF HEALING operating BY THE HOLY SPIRIT THROUGH an individual from God BRINGING ABOUT HEALING BY the SPIRIT is beyond me. In both cases it is God who performs the miracle rather than man. Such an idiosyncratic unfounded hermeneuic violates the PLAIN MEANING of the text. In fact this wizardry of Bible interpretation is NEVER EXPLICITLY stated by Jesus or by any of His Apostles. When James tells us to gather some elders together, anoint and pray for a sick person he said nothing about gathering a group of elders who HAVE the GIFT OF HEALING (AT WILL) though without such a provision there would be NO CERTAINTY that this KIND of prayer would EVER be answered.
It seems to me that the vital quality of this kind of healing is PRAYING IN FAITH.
14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the PRAYER OFFERED IN FAITH will restore the one who is sick (Jamed 5:14-15)
This faith is a response to the WORD OF GOD spoken to the inner man.

Jesus said He could ONLY do the (miraculous) works He "saw" the Father doing. He did not heal anyone by virtue of some SUPERNATURAL gift He could use whenever and ON whomever he wanted. He had to do it out of a VINE-BRANCH dependence on the Father. It is the same principle with the other spiritual gifts like PROPHESYING. When a person had the "GIFT OF PROPHECY" did this mean he had the power to prophesy ON TAP and could utter a never ending stream of prophecy whenever and however long he chose?

    Straw-man - You have no experience. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Second - You lost all moral authority by rejecting “your definition” of gifts today.

All the seriously ill are in hospital and dead are at morgue. They dont attend healing meetings. I think Kolenda should rethink. Anyway the biggest miracle is when somebody is born again and I am sure that Kolenda agrees.

Awesome video and teaching, there is no doubt miracles are happening daily. We are called to be the vessels for Christ to operate, He can't operate in us if we never allow him to work.

“And these signs will follow those who believe. They will lay hands in the sick and they will recover.”
This is the words of Jesus Christ, and he meant it.

Actually Daniel a testimony given by on the man of God who led me to the saviour where a young lady she led to the lord Jesus at the hospital he worked during a prayer service was suddenly filled and by the power of the Holy Spirit crying being urged to go lay hands on those who were severely stricken (this was a T.B. patients hospital) ,the story goes she went from ward to ward patients literally being shocked into health that at the end the wards were cleared living empty beds, many were saved that day.
