You only have to see somebody like Lennon yesterday - he hates rangers, rangers hate him but he is still able to give a professional honest review of what he has just witnessed. That's what he is paid to do. Sutton can't do that.

As a Liverpool fan. I am grateful for what Graeme Souness achieved at Liverpool. However, I've seen a clip of Graeme during his time at Rangers singing along to a sectarian chant that celebrates the killing of catholics. I don't think Sutton has ever stooped to those depths.

Graeme's wife is a catholic... The songs are 99% banter and tradition now. Most of the fans don't hate catholics and are not religious but we sing the songs because our dads sung them, and their dads, and their dads. It's tradition, builds a great atmosphere, comradery and gets you riled up for the game. Celtic have pro IRA songs singing about bombs and bullets of which innocent people died... It's goes both ways.

Incidentally the VAR official who changed that yellow for Silva to a penalty to Rangers is Nicky Walsh, a man who works as a physio teacher at Boclair Academy in Bearsden Glasgow. This school has an affiliation to Rangers football club bringing up and training potential young players to tryout for a career with Rangers F.C. Their school colors are Red ,white and Blue incidentally. And the man who officiated the game, John William Beaton, just happens to be a big Rangers fan. He was filmed drinking in the Crown bar in Glasgow after refereeing a derby game with fellow Rangers supporters. There is also a Rangers supporters club in Glasgow named after him. As they say in the USA "go Figure"

You cannot behave like Sutton did in commentary. If you are in the studio, different story, where it's the norm that guys defend their team. You can't go away from the commentary and make a cup of tea. I've watched dozens of Old Firm games over the years with Andy Walker and never felt put off. What's the point? Celtic fans don't enjoy the game anymore for having Sutton, but it really diminishes the game for the neutral and especially Rangers fans. Sky did a poor job in choosing a commentator who diminished the quality of the product for the majority of viewers (neutrals and Rangers fans). I'm sure there were even Celtic fans who like me, left the vitriol of the Glasgow goldfish bowl, and thought he was excessive.

@@aor3220 yes a broadcaster would give his opinion to the effect of "for me, not a penalty", or "that seems generous". Clearly different from a fan cast which seemed to pass Chris Sutton by. And again, Sky should not be putting forth a zealous commentator like Sutton for the booth. Like a Souness or a Boyd, that type of excessively Green/Blue tinted analysis can just about play in the studio, not in the commentary booth
As a Motherwell supporter, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. One of the more exciting ones in recent times. I was totally appalled by Sutton as a co-commentator and his bias to Celtic. When Celtic scored the third he roared like a fan. Totally unprofessional the whole game through. He was, however, correct that Silva dived all game and despite the penalty being valid (I could see the impact on his shorts from Johnston's swipe), he made an effort to dive there too. If I was a Rangers fan, I'd hate to have a player in my team that cheats and may rather throw himself down than take a chance. As for referees, it seems like the home team get the choice of ref and the VAR ref is the opposite. If this theory is true the Beaton/Walsh pairing will change to Clancy/Robertson for the league decider. Time for unbiased refs in Scotland. I don't buy the professionalism nonsense.
This is interesting, it was my assumption that neutrals would have been irritated too. I know as a Rangers fan I was irritated by commentary in a way I've never been before. Clearly Sky got it majorly wrong and his commentary detracted from the game for the majority of viewers. Like a ref who has a poor game, he should be sat down for future Old Firm games. I'm sure his manner of commentating would be well received on a fancast or a CelticTv (is that a thing?) stream.

So you actually think these two teams dictate to the SFA who they want officiating their home games ? get a grip. Both teams, in fact probably all teams in the league, have complained about certain refs and will have asked not to have them doing their games, a bit of a stretch to suggest they get to pick certain officials though.

I think he's subtly saying he's doing it indirectly by making a big deal of something that wasn't a big deal so that next time the ref thinks twice. Sutton does it constantly. Rodgers is now at it. Celtic have been at it every AGM. It's pretty embarrassing as a club.
Silva was rolling around at times but he didn't dive for the penalty, go back and freeze the frame when Silva is kicked.

Fabio Silva did dive and cheat all game, there is nothing biased in those comments. Rangers fans were booing Silva shortly before the penalty and gesticulating for him to stay on his feet. He was an embarrassment to what was a very good game

To begin, I’m a supported or neither Rangers or Celtic. I don’t mind pundits having an allegiance but they should try to show some level of neutrality / lack of bias in their comments, otherwise they lose people over the rest of their opinions on key talking points in a game (penalties, red cards, etc). Although Neville and Carragher are both really passionate for their clubs and show bias at times, it’s not constant and they are capable of expressing unbiased opinions. Sutton doesn’t appear to be and, to be fair, neither does Kris Boyd.

VAR didnt even show the correct images for the penalty 😂 they showed him dangling the leg AFTER johnson got the ball. But that wasnt shown.
3-3 fair though probably over the 98+ mins. Celtic superb first half but for Jack Butland. Rangers excellent second half. Tavernier got more room which Maeda didnt cover in second half. GG to watch though.

I love the fans questioning the penalty and the ref not giving it ... the disallowed goal by dessers .. the ref was yards away and gave nothing ... not a fan of VAR but in this case it was spot on with both decisions

Was Sutton biased, yes, but he was correct that it shouldn't have been a penalty. Alistair Johnston played the ball, and Silva was on his way down before he was even touched.
Under IFAB rules, a challenge can still be a penalty if the defending player gets the ball first and the officials deem the tackle to be careless, reckless or has excess force. However, in this case the challange was none of these, and I understand Celtic have lodged an official complaint as the VAR slow motion replay that referee John Beatton was shown didn't include the part where Johnston played the ball.
That said, as a neutral, it keeps things interesting for the run in, but I still think Celtic will edge it. Hatate and McGregor are back fit and, with a few more games under their belts, they will make a huge difference, and Rangers still need to go to Parkhead which will be a much tougher fixture for them than Sunday.
I remember Chris Sutton accused Dunfermline of "lying down" at Ibrox, he was threatened with legal action from the Pars.
