The episode “Magic” stuck out to me when I watched it in the late 80s when I got cable, all thanks to Joel Hodgson. His “sleepy” delivery and the wonderful prop magic/comedy act really stuck with me even after the show went off the air. So imagine my surprise on Thanksgiving ‘94 that I’m flipping through channels and come across Comedy Central and their Turkey Day marathon of MST3K, featuring the hilarious “magician” riffing on a bad movie with two robots. Needless to say, I’ve been a fan ever since. I met Joel at Dragon*Con years later and finally told him about seeing and loving him on Out of Control and MST3K.

I'm genuinely surprised you never mentioned the *DIZ NOISE.* That high-pitched, skull-splitting double shriek that was kind of her catchphrase. I used to do that around the house and make my mom want to kill me.

I'm watching now and since it was such a big part of the show and basically the signature for me, even more so than it being Dave Coulier's pre "Full House" gig.

It always blows my mind how much I remember from this show, especially the way Diz speaks. I would immitate her all the time.
All the clips in the video spark mmy mind, "Oh yes! I remember that bit!" I supposed re-airing 1 year of a show for 8 years will help get a little kid to memorize stuff. HAHA.
    Great vid as always.

Interesting that Diz's signature, uh, sound thing, isn't heard once for this video. Even though I haven't heard it for 30 years, I can hear it as vividly as my own voice. Can you be nostalgic for something you're not even sure you like all that much?

I'm sad you don't have the same fondness for this show that I did, but I appreciate you doing a serious treatment of it. For what it's worth, this show has been almost completely FORGOTTEN ABOUT by most people, so I appreciate that you took the time to do it. I think when I was a kid I just fell in love with the performers and their personalities. But yeah, the show could have been better and you make some good points about why it probably didn't last as long as it could have. To this day, I still associate Dave Coulier more with this show than with Full House as crazy as that probably sounds to a lot of people reading this.

I think you're spot-on about this not being a great show or what it could have been, but in a media environment where you didn't have a lot of other options you were glad when this show came on because some of the segments were pretty good (Diz was a stand-out) and it had some of the energy of You Can't Do That On Television/MTV and that Pee-Wee's Playhouse had later.

So glad to hear you calling out Klickstein. He was on an episode of the podcast "It's That Episode" and was just a total joke of a person, talking about how he doesn't own a TV anymore and that Nickelodeon's golden age television was the pinnacle of a medium. Really ridiculous stuff. Not surprised to hear he's a shitty researcher too.

I was 4 when this premiered and it's one of my absolute favorite Nick programs! Diz was my favorite because I liked every little thing she did on the show and yes, I loved the way she looks in every episode! Fun fact: David Stenstrom (Waldo) would later go on to play Hal on Masked Rider as well as lend his voice to certain Power Rangers series characters.

Oh my god, why didn't they just have a show with Coulier with Fred Neuman? Match made in heaven. I actually think OOC was one of the best shows on Nick and was probably the only of its kind. It’s difficult for an ensemble of adults to appeal to a kid audience on a kid channel. Each individual character brought their unique personalities to the table. The format was a classic late night talk show setting that appealed to kids which I enjoyed since I was kind of an old soul. And it would make sense why I liked show since you referenced the muppet show which i truly love. I would even say that i liked this show more than YCDTOTV because of the production quality and less character actors which allows more time for the viewer to become familiar with . I miss shows like this that appealed to kids but adults could still enjoy as well because OOC to me was never too over the top and goofy. Dave was a cool host to keep the show well balanced. I also loved the variety of skectches and gadgets on the show.Unfortunately the variety show/sketch/talk show format isn’t popular but I have always loved OOC and I don’t think there has been any other show like it in Nicks history. The closest that comes to mind is Don’t Just Sit There which was an awesome after school show. Hopefully you’ll do an episode on that soon. It’s hard to find footage of that show. This was probably the last original Nick production before the Double Dare splat era.

I watched it when I was around 9 when it first came out, and my memories are basically limited to 1) the intro animation and 2) Diz. I liked the _idea_ of a show that was "out of control" and against the rules, but it never actually materialized. They were so close to beating Pee Wee Herman to the punch with Diz; they just didn't know what they had with her, and unfortunately they made her play second fiddle to a cringey and unfunny host. Diz was the only one who seemed to _belong_ on that set - she was the only one who kids could realistically get behind (at least I know that was the case for me back then).

Interesting that Duck's Breath Mystery Theater wrote for the show, though. They came from where I grew up (Iowa City), so I knew of them. I ever recall seeing Dan Coffey (Dr. Science) checking out when I was working at a local grocery store there called Econofoods. While I still haven't seen Zadar! Cow From Hell, I remember hearing a lot about it when it was being filmed there. I did however see a PBS show from them called Dead Pan Alley, which got me interested in an a cappella group called The Bobs that were featured on that show. Crazy how that works! And yet, less surprising now that I remember than another member of the Ducks Breath troupe (Jim Turner) took his character Randy of the Redwoods to sister channel MTV around that time.

A good deal of Turkey TV, when it wasn't Roger Price having to film segments for it, often relied on a lot of outside materials like showing clips from movies, shows like Uncle Floyd, foreign commercials and shorts. It was a kind of odd mish-mash of different things though it probably didn't work as a kid show much like Out of Control tried.

One of the guys in the Out of Control clips looks a little like Floyd and kept making me do a double take, but then suddenly I recognized Scott Gordon and, after rewinding, Floyd himself. I realize now, you can clearly see the "TT" watermark as well as the "Uncle Floyd Show" title. We used to watch it on channel 50 (I think) in New York.

You’re not wrong. This show was never that great. It’s basically a muppet show/YCDTOT hybrid with absolutely zero focus and it wasn’t funny- even to a five year old. For all of Roger Price’s faults, YCDTOT was the far superior show because they stuck to a theme and they had an antagonist for the idiots to rally around/against in Ross. OOC more often than not was just loud and kind of annoying. (More so rewatching with the horrible laugh track on top)
I’m kind of surprised this show only lasted one season because they reran it ForEVer. If anything the entire aesthetic is early MTV lite, which is surprising it was technically a CySny original. It was jarring about three years later when Full House Starts and Dave Coulier was 30 pounds heavier.
Learning that Bob Saget was the first host of OOC is why this series exists

Out of Control was AMAZING for me as a kid and it absolutely DRIVES ME NUTS when people act as if "Cut it out" is a 100% Full House thing. No. It's straight out of Out of Control. I disagree with needing a bad guy on the show. The show didn't need that. It was weird, chaotic and bizarre and that's what made it great. That's what I loved about it as a kid. Didn't have some evil overlord hanging over everything, it was just fun.

Oh my God, thirty years later and I STILL remember the toothpaste as a burger topping bit! Such an odd show, Out of Control. Only watched it a few times, thought this sort of oddball entertainment was handled better in a few years by Turkey Television.

@@mattperiolat I think Turkey TV was '85, Out of Control was '84. Turkey TV may've had episodes with '86 copyrights as well, as I recall noticing episodes I didn't see before in later years.

I recall enjoying Out of Control during its brief run, but it did not have the impact on me that You Can’t Do That On Television and other Nick shows did. In fact, I had completely forgotten about it until this episode showed up on your channel.

    Dave=Dapper, looney-tunes-esque and the kermi-the-frog-type host
Diz=Cyndi Lauper-type stage manager, who loves to tell stories set to 2 minutes
Hern=Caustic, joking, laughing and the Dr. Smith kind of reporter, who'll stop at nothing to
overthrow Dave as the new host
Angela=Ditzy reporter who's eager to be the best one the show
Waldo=Geeky inventor of all the gadgets on the set
Ha-Ha 3200=Comiedy computer, always supplying the jokes, and often at odds
with Hern, who calls it a "humorless hunk of hapless machinery"
The first half of the "Big Boss" episode, where Bill Bixby of "The Incredible Hulk"
makes a surprise cameo at the beginning of it, is missing. Diz doesn't like it
when someone tries to take over as the new host of the show, like Bixby, Fred
Newman or, in this case,....Hern! That show lasted for one season only on
Nickelodeon, and started in reruns, until it sound up in the wasteland of
obscurity in the early 90's. As Diz, herself would say, Awwww, luuuckyyyyyyyy!

Unrelated to the subject: Watching this series makes me begin to wonder if these shaky early years are why Nickelodeon is so obsessed with scoring instant hits and tossing anything that doesn't strike oil instantly. They never want to be in a position to lose money or ratings again. But that's just speculation on my part.
Related to the subject: Dave playing the straight man reminds me of the times Joey on Full House tried to put his foot down and be serious and how people didn't expect it of him because he was so silly and goofy. Or susceptible to "the bunny noses" (the ep where he grounds DJ for being late).

Regarding that brief bit you did recapping Coulier's standup comedy career, I can't say I was expecting that much racism on his part. Holy shit, Dave, what is the matter with you? I would hope he's learned better since then, but even for the '80s, that was pretty bad.

based on the clips i've seen in this video, out of control actually looks pretty funny. And this is coming from a gen z kid. it's one of those loose, silly shows that seems like it would be best to watch late night on a saturday when your brain is shut off and you don't watch it from a critical perspective.
i think if you watch it that way, you'll enjoy it more.
