  • Welcome to 1986! With Nickelodeon now a twenty-four hour channel, there were going to be time slots that just needed to be filled, it didn't matter what you put there. Like 6 a.m., nobody's watching TV that early! May as well dump a bunch of Curious George shorts there!

    The PBS series def did a better job at finding a balance with George's conflict and resolution. There, George isn't ALWAYS the cause of conflict, but when he is, for the most part he either makes up for it by actually learning how to make things in that situation right, or just applu that knowledge in a wiser way elsewhere to show where he's grown.

    As far as the supposedly ambiguous morality of these shorts, I think it's a little more forgivable given George isn't really trying to be bad, he's just (like many little kids) curious about the world around him and doesn't know any better than not to mess around with stuff. (If there's any blame to go around, it should really land on TMWTYH for constantly leaving George unsupervised when he KNOWS George has a tendency to get into things.)
    It's a little similar to the Paddington Bear stories--Paddington also messes up spectacularly because he's innocent in the ways of the human world (and more than a little clumsy), but always manages to make up for it in spite of himself. But most of the time, Paddington's genuinely trying to help. And in both cases, it's a nice way of telling kids that "even when you mess up, it's not the end of the world, and the grownups in your life will love you anyway."

    • @SaviorGabriel
      @SaviorGabriel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed. The message I always took away from Curious George as a kid is, "Don't do the kinds of things that get George into trouble. Do the kinds of things that make George a good little monkey." The stories show that our actions have consequences, both good, and bad. We see George do something wrong, and the negative reaction to it without getting ourselves into trouble. We then see George do something good followed by positive reinforcement. Through Curious George, we learned about responsibility.

    Amazing that the theme song can still instantly relax me after over 30 years. As far as being influenced to do bad stuff, I think I was mostly surprises that they'd even show a character acting that naughty (I was naturally a bit of a goody two shoes as a kid though lol). The premise of the show was so unlike real life, I don't think it would've occurred to me to reenact anything (although I may have swallowed a puzzle piece at some point...)

    It's not unusual for one of these episodes to be almost immediately followed by a couple dozen comments saying, "Oh, I grew up with that, thanks for sharing the behind-the-scenes!" Well, seeing as I grew up with one of these tapes (George at the fire station! George as a dog walker! George at the water park!) and wondered why it disappeared off of TV almost as fast as I'd just discovered it, I'm once again as appreciative as everyone else who views your content. Also, thanks for giving me something else to watch today: Disney Channel Lunch Box, I barely remember you being on, but let's catch up, old almost-friend.
    As to the dubious educational content of these shorts, I'm certain it's supposed to be more about occupations or places in the city and how those operate, similar to the classic "Goes to the Hospital" book (and, quite frankly, what the 2006 show does for general scientific concepts). George just happens to get really handsy when it comes to learning how the sausage is made (hey, is there a sausage factory visit in that batch somewhere?). Sure, his morality could use some fine-tuning, but, to me, George's antics here are Mr. Roger's "Picture Picture" factory tours loosely connected by a barebones plot. I can imagine far worse going out at 6 in the morning.
    And as for what we learned at 26:14, part of me understandably cringed and reevaluated my moral obligations for the umpteenth time, while another part imagined the equally tone-deaf "Muppet Show" sketch that easily could've been. At least, I hope, he wasn't trying to, y'know, kill them?

      @benjaminkellog7311 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, thank you for not mentioning "Forrest Gump." It's a great movie, Tom Hanks is a national treasure, yadda yadda yadda, but it would've just detracted from today's tale.

      True, even if it was a short ditty (as a kid, I did wonder who made these since nobody besides the writers got credited anyway). At least they intro was different as they alternated between several animations of George either swinging on a vine or just getting out of bed.

    Something interesting about the content of the first Curious George book...TMWTYH is depicted as kidnapping George for a zoo, and although George is upset at first, he quickly seems to forget about his home in Africa. Even as a kid, I thought this was a little iffy...didn't George get a say in anything? But in the 2003 movie, they rather wisely changed it to George taking a liking to Ted (the name they gave TMWTYH) and stowing away on his ship.

    Oh I loved Curious George when I was a little kid. My earliest memories of seeing it on tv when I was 3 years old and it was airing on Nickelodeon as part of Pinwheel. Then when I was a little older, I watched it on Lunchbox on The Disney Channel. We had gotten Disney around 1991 and by this point, it had lured me away from Nickelodeon, as before I was an avid viewer of that channel and watched some of the shows that were discussed recently in the Nick Knacks and have yet to be discussed. By the time we subscribed to The Disney Channel, everything changed.
    I had two vhs copies of Curious George and a few of the books.

      Weston Woods' films were also seen on Nickelodeon later on for the program "Eureka's Castle" (as part of the "Children's Circle" video library).

    So George writes a letter, floods a room, steals a pump, steals a COW and then... “George, you’re going into SPACE!”
    This story cannot get weirder!
    *murder, possible hate crime warning*
    I stand corrected.
    Thank you for acknowledging this was originally in Pinwheel! I knew I’d seen George, but not at the six AM slot. I was watching Nick in ‘85, but some of this wasn’t squaring with my memory. Can only suppose my west coast cable was slow to complete the switch for A&E’s separate feed and for Nick at Nite to start, since I only remember Camp Nickelodeon as the precursor before Nick at Nite began in earnest for me in 1986.
    You may be itching for Double Dare (me too), but for me... my 1986 path leads to El Dorado. And the Mysterious Cities of Gold.

    Curious George was on Nickelodeon?!? Let Me Count The Ways. I wasn't watching Nickelodeon back in early 1986 so I was only relegated to CBN and USA networks, the latter was no stranger to Curious George. It did pop up in stand alone 4 minute shorts on USA network's long running package show Calliope, a show that lasted a few years longer than Pinwheel. Calliope was where I was first introduced to Curious George, not Nickelodeon. And why, WHY push Danger Mouse out of 6AM territory to make room for 5 4 minute shorts when you can do just as good with only one on Calliope or Pinwheel? Like the Bee Gees. Gerry was still on the trough point in early 1986 but her fortunes would change a second time thanks to Double Dare, but again, that's a whole different story.

      Ah. I must've watched it on Fox Family, as that's the only time frame that makes sense. I always associate it with the period that Nick was showing The Muppet Show, but perhaps they just came on at the same time in the afternoon.

    I will say, even despite the show being...less good than I remember, and even despite the choppy, cheap animation, I feel that visually this is the closest a Curious George adaptation has come to the books, emulating their artstyle perfectly. It's not gonna make the content it serves any better, but I do find it to be very appealing, and I commend the show's art director for keeping that bit of consistency for fans of the franchise.

      It has that going for it. They at least tried with replicating that look than to go all out on another direction.

    I think I remember the books more than the TV shorts, but I do remember the theme song at least.
    Curious George sounds like one of those things that works best if it's just silly lighthearted adventures, and trying to make it educational or moralizing is just a mistake. It'd be like trying to make Garfield into a series about proper pet care with Jon as the protagonist.
    ...oh. OH. Wow, jeez, that's a shitty way to go. :/ Sounds like a hate crime to me.

      Out of pure nostalgia, in like 2016 I watched the series. It was on PBS Kids but only on at like 6AM. To be honest, I enjoyed it, for a kids show, of course.

    In a Facebook group I'm in, someone mentioned the studio Atkinson Film-Arts in Ottawa animated on the Curious George series. Not sure if they were at it from the beginning or after Lafferty, Harwood & Partners took over but I thought I'd link to this tidbit of a "Mik Casey" being an un-credited director on these.

    In fairness, the “you can get away with everything, so long as you’re rich and popular” bit is pretty much the truth. If you’re rich and white, you can have youthful indiscretions well into your fifties, but if you’re poor and black, you’re an adult at age twelve. It’s not a good lesson for them to learn, but it is the truth.
