You could detach it and mount it on a tank if you want, but these are designed for portable use and it isn't really necessary. This one is at the top of the line for the studio series, which means a single artist. If you were going to be doing say T shirts all day at a fair, there are other compressors which would suit you better. The IS-975 Power Jet Pro has a 2 liter tank and is set up for 2 airbrushes. I have the single piston version of the compressor above and run it all day.

For those w/Zero clue to on/off cycle-
it's basically tankless, so any drop in pressure it's going to come on & off as quickly air is used.
    Is basic science that difficult?
Can always add a gal tank with hose right from head port-
    then regulator off tank.
But this is not a true airbrush compressor-
Real Commercial Airbrush units have large displacement /slower speed & super quiet.

The tank helps to take pulses from the pumps out of the air flow.

Do you know if it's possible to detach it from the handle tank and connect it to a proper airtank? I prefer to airbrush for 2-3 hours in one go and if I had it connected to a large tank, say 10litre or such then it wouldn't need to run much at all. The question is however if it's possible to connect it to a proper airtank?

Of all the things I've purchased this year... buying one of these was probably the worst... Firstly - It's very noisy. The so called "air tank in the handle", is a fairly lame... When spraying at 40psi or higher, the compressor struggles to keep up.
I will admit it is nicely made and looks good, but I didn't buy it for good looks.... I bought it so my wife could airbrush as well using her own gear.
The compressor I use is a Sparmax AT250... I now wish I had bought another one of these instead.

This is my dream compressor. They're expensive, so probably not going to happen.

for how long can you run this compressor in high pressure without heating up..

What do you have attached to the top of your airbrush trigger? I'd love to have a rubber trigger cover for my Iwata, but they don't make one. Badger does, though. I've tried it on my Iwata, but it doesn't fit.

that drop of pressure at start is normal?

or you could get a GMC ultra quiet compressor like I did. its also cheaper

I would rather have it run non stop, instead of shutting off and restarting that often.

This thing sucks. It just refills every 6 seconds, god damn that would be annoying as fuck. Holy smokes. Rather go with california air tools compressor. Can get a bad as fuck one for 250.
