Great advice. I always carry two GPS and old-school low-tech compass. I have been in situations where it goes from perfectly calm seas, and an unexpected storm comes in with 4 to 6 foot seas, 35 knot winds, and near zero visibility. Of course I have a VHF radio and a PLB. Call me crazy but I've even thought about getting a back up PLB... I'm sure if the shit goes down and the extremely unlikely scenario of my PLB not working I will wish I spent the extra $250 for a back up PLB…

One more opinion: I wouldn't rely on my buddy boat for any back up systems. When the weather turns nasty and visibility is limited it is very easy to lose your buddy boat. Plus people panic in situations that get gnarly so you need to be self-sufficient.

D H you are just like me I also thought about buying another Personal Locator Beacon because I don't trust just one plb you think the same way I think there's never enough safety in the ocean especially when you're alone

Out On The Reef Just like you I love/live to adventure. Adventures that others might think are dangerous really are not dangerous with the right preparation. Amongst other sports I am a rock climber. In rock climbing you learn the importance of redundant systems... or you die. I hope your videos encourage people to live their lives fully, prepare properly, and not let fear keep them sitting on the couch :-)

There's a adapter for the micro SD card so I can become a regular SD card

Thanks for the video, but would like to watch a compression against other back up 2AA devices such as Vista, legend, hc, etrex.

Hi guys, we've just bought a brandnew GPSMAP 78s through Amazon. We're trying to set it up for field work but when we compared the marked waypoint to other GPS and other mobile android devices, there seems to be a big difference. almost 2km difference from actual location. Any advice on correcting actual location?

This GPS is not marine grade and when it gets wet with salt water, it can fail at anytime.
