- The Record That Will Never Be Broken
The WM P88, a French sports prototype racing car, gained fame by breaking the speed record at the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans. The team's goal was to exceed 400 km/h (248.5 mph) on the Mulsanne Straight. Achieving this required meticulous aerodynamic refinements and a powerful Peugeot engine. During qualifying, driver Roger Dorchy reached a peak speed of 405 km/h (251.1 mph), setting a new record. Although the car did not finish the race due to mechanical issues, its record-breaking speed remains a historic achievement in endurance racing history.

The subject of this video is interesting, but the video would be so much better without all the stock photos and irrelevant clips that has nothing to do with the P88. And the same goes for all the cliches and blah blah blah.
That was the final nail in the coffin of the uninterrupted run from Tertre Rouge to Mulsanne Corner.
I wonder why the French did that?
@@john1703 Pretty sure it was the FIA bringing in straight length restrictions
@@john1703 It's difficult to know the exact story but it was a fight between the FIA and Le Mans and also a majority of drivers were complaining about how dangerous it was for any car of any category
@@john1703 Because the drivers protested.
@@YOUENNNNThat’s right.

> shows footage of touring cars at bathurst
There was a period where the Australian touring car series ran to Group C just not the Sports Cars version.
There's still one place that you can see cars going 240 mph. Indianapolis.
To paraphrase Norbert Singer: We were worried when we first saw that Peugeot was breaking 400kph on the straight with their car. When soon after we read the actual laptime, we stopped worrying.
That Top Gear bit on Peugeot was bloody hilarious....
"He bumped me to let me know that he was there.."
My uncle and I never laughed so hard. I miss that guy and that episode is one of my fondest memories of him.

Always loved this story, no fucks given, just going straight for the top speed record, an underdog effort, and a forever French king of speed at LeMans, unlikely to ever be beaten.
The C9 Sauber got up to 400 kph, the Jags did 395, and some sketchy "~1100hp faulty" Nissan fell just short (after the chicanes were set), but none could do it, magical.
The main difference was that all other manufacturers actually wanted to finish the race, preferably in first place. That Peugeot was built for only one purpose: reach the highest top speed ever on the Mulsanne straight and then the engine can grenade for all we care.
@@tjroelsma so what? They did it, and none got to be even close
@@hugovilag Oh sure, but I just wanted to point out WHY the others teams were beaten by this kamikaze Peugeot.
@@tjroelsma the first sentence of my comment already adresses it
Another top quality video and love it. This channel is definitely one of the best car channel I knew. Keep up I love all your videos 💪🏻
Thank you :) Glad you enjoyed this one too
I miss that old mulsanne straight. Wish I got a chance to see it since I was born after it was chanced
You mixed up Australian "Group C" touringcar regulations with FIA´s prototype "Group C" regulations. Two totally different things... Otherwise a really nice video!
Thank you for the feedback, and for watching! :)
@@MotorLegends-stories You're welcome!
Exactly, Bathurst.
So TIL Peugeot was actually a back seat driver on this record, as I had (wrongfully) assumed it was a factory team, considering all the shameless plugs they did during the era (I briefly owned a 405 MI16).
That's a pretty amazing story about the PRV engine. I would have never thought that the DeLorean PRV V6 could develop so much horsepower. Has there ever been a DeLorean with the original PRV V6 engine tweaked to develop those amazing horsepower figures?
Great Video :)
fantastic video.
I always wonder if the Nissan R90CK would of broke the speed record on the Mulsanne straight.
230 mph on the mulsanne WITH chicanes is just insane.
the problem is that records have to happen in the race, r90ck did it in qualy
@@deadrippp I believe the C9 hit 248 mph on the straight in '89 during qualifying. I could be wrong.
Yes it did iirc 401kph

Good video. Very informative. Did not know that WM held the top speed record. Always thought it was a 917LH. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for watching!
Thank You for another mgnificent production. I still have not worked out what was more awe-inspiring: the horsepower ratings of these small European engines or the intriguing shape of the wheel arches, (or lack of) on the P88.
Also thanks for a fresh pronunciation of the name Peugeot. As a child I might have read it before hearing anyone speak it aloud, and so I always called them PIEw-joe, as in Pepe le Pew, with the emphasis on the first syllable. Then in high school ensued prolonged arguments with friends who pronounced it PURR-joe, as in purring kittens, again with the emphasis on syllable #1.
Now hearing the name pronounced purr-JOE, with the emphasis on the second syllable, I concede that my childish phoenetic pronunciation, based on reading the name in a book without ever having heard it spoken, was err, well, inaccurate to put it gently. Which of the other two is correct; which syllable to emphasise? I'll leave that between you and my high school mates. (who would agree with me that Porsche has one syllable - silent E)

Shame we don't see private teams like this make their way into the big leagues. Just a couple of guys making a car out of passion. Mostly because its impossible to develop something like a sports prototype unless you're a huge manufacturer with hundreds of millions in budget and hundreds or thousands of employees.

Amazing story.
Never heard about that story before and i am well into motorsports! Awesome video my friend! The fact that a hobby project ended up and running at LeMans is awesome and insane (in a good way). And now with this achievement it becomes even more mindblowing that a Bugatti runs over 400km/h as "production car" you can drive on the street and to the store to get milk :D (sure with a nice pricetag but still...). Let's see what the Jesko Absolute will deliever :) cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching :)
It would have been awesome to be standing next to the fence seeing blast by at that speed!!
A record that will never fall.
1:35 the cars shown here are not Ferraris, but Alfa Romeo 33/2.
I thought the C9 did 413kmh, but maybe that's an "unofficial" record?
C9 did 400kmh . Still really fast second fastest in that straight
RIP Roger Dorchy, A legend never forgotten
Cool😊
Why don't I ever come across videos of this car, even if I search for them
Well it's not the worst way I've heard someone say Peugeot
that is most impressive - V-max!!!
I would think that Roger Dorchy was a little white faced when he came in after this &,of course, this achievement was mainly responsible for the chicanes installed for the 1989 race.
Lap times at Le Mans now are quicker with chicanes than before.
This did not amuse Ferdinand Piëch...
So his get back was the Bugatti Veyron.
It's a long nice story too...
Thanks for the video....
whats crazy is the porsche 917 record was from 1971 in a car that was normally aspirated
Message to P88: "Bring the noise."
The Porsche family wanted their record back so Ferdinand Piëch requested that the Bugatti Veyron must have a top speed of 407 km/h!
why do people love this car . all it did was get in other teams way . could not go around corners at any speed with out going of track. did not take to the track for 3 hours. did not even have a go of even finishing
I recall hearing some of the Radio Le Mans coverage where they announced each time the WM ventured out on track again.
In fact it is the fastest racing vehicle period.
This Peugeot record was a reason to build Bugatti Veyron
No that's the mclaren f1
👍👍
That's just too cool!
I'll be the judge of this 😅
that record pissed-off Ferdinand Piëch so much that he told his engineers that the Bugatti veron must be street legal, a daily driver and must go reliably min 407kmh !!! in my eyes the ultimate F#$!YOU to peugeot
This is why Veyron does 407
That car is - without any doubt - very fast and impressive. But in '87 one of those cars made 13 laps, the other broke after 3.5 hours, less than 1/3 of the race duration. It was a dang fast car, but it couldn't really compete.
Le Mans is not about top Speed, it's about driving fast for 24 hours and not break the car.
Weren’t you listening? They were not there to compete as they knew they didn’t have a chance to win. All they cared about was breaking the record and they did! Pay attention smh
womp womp
And we say thank you to Sylvain Lyve for the subject 🙃
A movie about this story would be amazing
It's like winning a traffic light race without the other car knowing.
Speed and cornering ability are always a compromise.
They won a competition without rivals.
I think the car has to go at least the distance for it to count.
Sounds just like Peugeot, just last long enough then break down.
😂
Says the Hyundai owner !
@@gregrobins5615 wrong guess; I have a 1972 911, 1.2 million miles, Volvo P1800, 500,000 miles, 2000 honda Insight 330,000 miles, and one additional of the same model 208,000.
@@litestuffllc7249 Wow, a Volvo and a Honda. Nobody has ever seen these 2 brands break down, right ?
@@gregrobins5615 Right; a Volvo p1800 holds the world record for longevity over 4 million miles; I've never seen a 1st generation honda insight actually break, need a clutch or tires; sure but never have seen one have a mechanical break down; crashes obviously; It only has a 1 liter but I've had it over 10,000 ft passes no problem. My buddies father bought him a Peugeot for graduation from coollege which he picked up new in France; it was already rusting by the time they sent it back home. So I don't have a good impression on Peugeots sure it was just one car; but my cars never had such a problem with a new car.
Pls don't only use mph, at least write the kph on the screen when talking about miles
Yeah, it's annoying to have to convert units every time a youtube channels talks about mph or lb (or any other imperial measurements, those are just the most common ones in car content)
Sorry,a lot of us prefer MPH 👍
@@johnbarrert3732 puting conversions in the corner doesn't take that away, and makes it more understandable for most people
No, it was the 2 cars, 1 Mercedes and 1 Porsche, that took off at around 400km/h and somersaulted into the woods that brought about the chiquaines on the mulsane straight.
This is a bit ridiculous ... what if Porsche took one var and designed it for fastest top speed ( before the chicanes ) they may have been in the 260’s.
That would be cool even if it blew up
Top speed yay!!!!!
And 30 years before an MG EX181, with a Supercharger 1500cc 4 Cylinder, and only 300hp went 400kph at Bonneville.
Why do english speaking people allways call it mulsanne straight? The correct name is hunaudieres straight. Mulsanne is only the corner at the end of the straight.
It’s easier to pronounce and more well known
Eau da rouge ?
Because nobody knows that name? Mulsanne is not only easier to pronounce, it is more well known, even if technically incorrect.
Thats like calling the scottish or irish people english. I bet they dont like that. Its not very polite.
I dont care how anyone calls it in private but at least in documentarys or videos like this one it should be done right.
@@christianhentschel8628 apart from the fact literally nobody calls them that, so that doesn’t count
Hideously fast! And…well…hideous!
What can be defined as " fastest" in Le Mans history?? Highest top speed or average speed or maybe the vehicle traveled longest in 24 hrs?? IMHO I think its the Audi R15 since it covered the most distance in 24 hrs. A car is not fast if it has to stop every 30 mins for refuling, or breaks down after 20 laps.
Fast in this definition is sheer speed
or go around a corner with out coming of the track at speeds faster then walking
Freakin french sed ey take that....in a frenchy akcent of course....and made future attempts null and void....like snails and frog legs ....
It's pronounced coo-pay
People in different towns, different regions and different countries pronounce words, well, differently. Don’t be so insecure
@@nytia117 There's nothing insecure about teaching someone something new.
Well, then, it's not the same course. Same thing happened with the Ring. It's not the same course any more, so the "record" no longer applies.
I could break that record. Give me an underground racing 3000 whp V10 and a Porsche 919 and we can hit 430 kph even with the reduced Mulsanne
Listening to this guy pronounce Peugeot is grating.
ONE lap, it's a DRAG CAR, not a racing car. PFFT ...
What is miles per hour?!
Is this video dedicated to be viewed by viewers from one country only? So be it.
The content creator made it very clear that the target was 400 km/h.
