On the top of police radios is a red button. if it gets pressed, it opens up a priority open mic for 10 seconds. It will override any other radio chatter. at the same time, its GPS location is sent so that other police can respond to the location. It has the open mic so that the officer wearing it can talk without having to push the talk button. This red button can sometimes be acidently pushed in a struggle but normally the opporator wil give a verbal stand down if that happens in the ten seconds.
It CAN do that if the entire radio system is set up properly. USUALLY it just simply tries trasmitting repeatedly that "radio xyz has an emergency" to everyone, and then they have to figure out who has the radio and where they are

If there is no response or any other that "sorry, my fat fingers missed S8" you'll be located and get send some vehicles

Although my agency’s IT deactivated it on ours since as an emergency management agency, we aren’t in those dangerous situations normally. But I can see how it’s super easy to accidentally activate it
Thats kinda dumb. An emergency situation is ofcause not the norm, however you can't just deactivate the panic button for the reason "Yeah it doesn't happen often enough." Imagine if you are friggin dieing and can't hold down the talk button to get help.

The van driver may be in a different talk group or may not be response trained. Not all officers are response trained (drive in blue lights) meaning they can only activate them to pull over a vehicle or block a road. They can’t use them to move vehicles out the way
The van most likely is a custody van, I've seen them previously and they are used for that or public disorder (riots). It's possible it wasn't responding because it already had a suspect, wasn't trained for that, etc.
Did a bit more research, it is a custody van. MP50 is apart of the Merseyside Police. With also more research, it's possible this was a arrest that occurred during that day.

I was also a prison officer later in life. Hitting the red button triggered a " first response " the system issued a coded bleep and then went to talk through. Control automaticallly identifies your call sign and location which is passed to the first response team. Should you accidentally press your transmit button three times that also triggers a first response which pisses control off no end.

Then all of a sudden I heard some radio chatter, the next thing I know, he jumped back in his car and tore off down the road.
