I’m really enjoying your channel. I’m just looking at starting to paint oils moving from Watercolor. I like your approach from beginning to end and will be trying this out in the next week.
I loved the way you added the reflective sunlight on the waves. Just the right balance needed.
    Thank you.

Loved watching this, Mike. Love your troubleshooting explanations at the beginning too.
I struggle a bunch with saturated, high key, luminous colors in oil - oranges, pinks. Best solution I’ve found is to either rub out the underpainting back to the white gesso, or apply titanium white and let it dry in the area I want to saturate. Then I come in with a transparent color like quin magenta or transparent orange and glaze in the saturation over the existing tone. I find it super difficult to get to the desired saturation if I’m working on wet paint.
Alternatively I’ll just tone the whole canvas something outrageous and bright and block in where I don’t want the saturation showing. 😂 But I do a lot of really bright red sandstone fm types of paintings that involve lots of those colors.
Thanks again for sharing, really like watching these real time process ones!

Good suggestions! I find can often get the effect I'm after with a few touch ups after the painting dries. Glad you enjoyed!

You make really great videos! They make oil painting less intimidating and it encourages people to try it out. I love that experiment a lot and tell people to just go for it!

Loved this real time video. I felt like I went through the creative process with you and I learned a lot. Please make more like this. An interesting thing about the subject your choose, the cool colours were in the foreground and the warm colours were in the background.

At 24:15 some of the toned canvas comes through giving a nice luminating color for the reflected light on the water. It's real nice! ⛱

I've done a lot of sunsets and there is always the danger of making them saccharin. You might try this method that I use all the time and learned from Dennis Sheehan: he starts a painting like this with the larger house brushes (2 inch or larger, depending on the size of the canvas of course). You can google him to see that he's a master of the sunset (he's also a tonalist-think George Inness, etc.). Lay in the colors at first, darker and less saturated than you think (this is the block in). Don't bother putting any brighter yellows or white, unless you want a very warm underpainting in that area. Then go in and create your sun or brightest areas in the sky by using a paper towel or rag (cotton Q-tips work too), to rub out/off the paint. Use terps if you need to get the really light spot of say the sun or moon. Remember, darker is always better to start off with; you can always lighten or add more saturation to the darker areas, but I would let the sunset sing and support that solo with toned down and less saturated colors surrounding those areas that are center stage. Like you said, too many people want to let every portion of the painting have the spotlight and the whole suffers because of it. With sunsets you actually need a lot of muted colors for support. It is hard at first, but start with fewer colors. I've seen him create a beautiful sunset painting with only two colors: burnt sienna and thalo green. He could use white, but he wants to show the artist the importance of tone above all. Of course he normally uses an array of colors, but sometimes he wants to show how tone is the most important thing and wants beginners not to be overwhelmed with too much.

Here he is years ago on public TV in the Boston area using two colors and he makes it look much easier than it really is (after painting thousands of these paintings): drive.google.com/file/d/0B6V0zC1unnQoRVYwQk8taWFSemc/view?usp=sharing

Your rolling chair sounds like breakers. LOL! I enjoyed your problem-solving comments on the study as you went along. I'm intrigued by how you air stroke into your lines and angles before you lay down paint. I'm going to give that a try, it might help prevent me from overworking areas.

Love it . You mentioned you would go a larger size , what would be your ideal size for canvas . Also what was your yellow and purple color you had used . Thank you .

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If I go larger it would probably be 16x24" or larger. A larger panel would allow for more expressive brushwork. As for colors, I used cadmium yellow medium and dioxazine purple.

    Just some things to consider:
in the parts to of the water reflecting the sky, maybe a shift to a greener blue. And I see a little more lightness (pinkness) in the top of the sky.

Love this video and channel, thank you! In the reference picture the front-right wave (foam) appears slightly darker than the front water (which seems to reflect some sun’s light). It is very subtle, may be because our brain interprets water foam as white, and white = light. In the adjacent front-left wave the difference is more evident. In your painting these values are inverted. Is this intentional? I ask as I’m not sure if in this case you try to approach “real” values or perceived/subjective values.
