- Bob Stormer and Roy Hughes (Patch) test the punches they found online. Tell us what you think in the comments below. Considering you can buy the CH-60 31 ton for less than $150 and the CH-70 35 ton for less than $200, are they better than just drilling a hole? Our boys find out.
Just got the CH-70 this afternoon hooked it up to the pump thanks to this video showing changing out the hose connection. Works like a friggin champ.
A lotta bang for the buck. :)
To setup the die you need to drop the bottom portion of the die into the hole and leave the Allen screw loose. Insert the top portion of the die into the nut and then drop it into the bottom die and position it in the desired direction. Lower the ram enough so that you can raise the nut and to begin screwing it on. Adjust the direction of top and bottom die and then tighten the Allen set screw to secure the bottom die. Then tighten the collet with the top die inside the bottom die. Use an open end wrench to keep the top die centered as you tighten down the nut. Check your alignment. Apply cutting oil to the top of the plate and then punch your hole.
So I'm brand new to this, so what else do you need to get this running? Some sort of hydraulic pump setup? How would you go about that if this was the only hydraulic application you need?
Hello I have a CH-60 punch and the internal thread is 3/8 ZG / BSPT and not NPT, very similar but the thread taper is different.
Thanks for saying the thread size and type I couldn't find it anywhere! Hopefully the CH-70 has the same type.
Pretty bad ass!!! Looks like a must-add for the race shop, be great for poking holes in brackets and stuff. Looks like might have to make some better stripper plates that are closer to the punch to help keep from distorting work piece.
for the money, we were thinking things like, "well, look at the price of a 5/8 or 3/4" drill bit. Seems like a good piece to have around the shop. :)
Brilliant video thank you 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Awww shucks. :)
NEW QUESTION! I got the CH-70 beast and am super impressed using the same pump you guys have, but now wondering how long the tooling will last. For example, say how many cycles before getting dull with the 1/2 inch diameter through 1/4 inch mild steel. Will something like tap magic cutting fluid make the punches last a few thousand cycles?
Solid question. If you're like us, you'll lose that tooling long before it wears out. :D
@@MontanaMetal Hope so - Thanks! In January, I need to put four 1/2 inch holes in each of forty four 3/16-in thick mild steel 2 in wide flatbar circles (which is cool because they are 15 inch diameter and thus fit right over the CH-70 so to be punched from the inside radius, and the material will rest right against the die and not bend the steel, as opposed to coming in the other way. Clear as mud, right?). So, I'll see what happens after about 200 pops anyway. Thing is, I cannot stop and wait for a new punch during the project...so I guess it is another 32 buckeroos for a spare.
Merry Christmas to you! The season of Hope and Peace.
correct me if I'm wrong but don't these work faster with the hydraulic setup instead of the pneumatic / hydraulic setup? Really glad you guy's posted this btw.
No idea. Kind of my first rodeo on this sort of thing. :D
Do you know if it is possible to punch a 1/4” hole in the middle of the flat part of a 3/4” steel angle?
The hole would be about 0.43” from the outside corner.
I worry there is not enough room and the punch will hit the side of the angle before hitting the side of the angle resting on the die
Appreciate any help in this matter
Bro straight up looks like a character from metal gear, loving it!
LMAO, he does! :D
Great video.....
Very useful info......👍👍
What oil type for these? Mine doesn't have any info. I got the Vevor yeller types.
Nice addition to the shop I need one! Where did you find them?
ebay find
Nice tool. It is to heavy to move it? i found many in e-bay, buy no one answer how much it weight and i need to carry the tool every day.
I didn't find it to be outrageous. Maybe 25-30 pounds. More than easy enough to pack say a few hundred feet if need be. Probably more if you're buff. :D
@@MontanaMetal thank you for the fast answer. In a few day i will order one and the electric pump. Now i have a hand pump, but with the electric it is very easy.
Thank tou for share your experience.
Great vid guys! What are the outer dimensions of the dies on the ch70? Looking to get one but need to know if I can make custom dies for it. Thanks in advance for any info
MAN, that is a solid question. They're out at Patch's farm for the winter. I guess I don't know. I wonder if the ebay listings might mention it?!?!
@@MontanaMetal I've spend about 3 hours scouring the web and all I can find or the hole sizes they punch lol can't find the outer dimensions anywhere 😔
@@MontanaMetal basically I want to make a forge press die set to press using 1/16 aluminum sheet to make cones. with a 90 degree taper, 7/8od and 3/4 Id.
@@jeremiahcase4655 I feel ya. I remember doing the same thing. You'd think it would be easier to find.
@@MontanaMetal just got the ch70 yesterday, top die is 1" diameter and bottom is 1 9/16" if anyone else needs to know
Great movie. Will ch70 be able to extrude 14x20 beans in 12 mm thick steel?
maybe. :)
Lubricants would work great so the metal stops getting stuck
Solid idea, we're still new to this, "no drill bits" idea. :)
where did you get those slotted punch dyes? i just bought the big ass guy and i need that slotted dye for suuuuurreee!!!!!
was an ebay find. Not sure how I found it. But if you poke around, they're there. :)
What size thread is it?
Not sure. We should find some kid that's good on the interwebz and have him look it up. :D
Where did you find the slotted die?
I don't have an exact link or anything but eventually found them on ebay.
@@MontanaMetal Can both of these share the same dies?
@@24vignettes94 Crap.... I don't recall any more. Although I think they do, because we used my buddies bigger one, with MY dies.
Great video - THANKS very much! What is the CHEAPEST electric pump that will work with this?? I don't believe I can afford the one you are using.
Question -- Is it at all possible to use a hydraulic HAND operated pump rather than electric? I KNOW that may be a silly question, but I have a home shop and could really make use of the punch on a regular basis, BUT I (like a lot of DIYers) have a limited budget. That is, I can afford 200 dollars for the punch but not 300+ for the electric pump. Thanks again!
I have an old school 770 Rockford puncher that I bought at auction many moons ago. A few years back I bought some old and tired "hydraulic hose crimpers" without the dies. I did this just to repurpose the pump and power the puncher. I think I paid $100 a pump (I got two). Today I finally got the setup to work and it works awesome. Here is the video: th-cam.com/video/foZH70_ZV_8/w-d-xo.html
In a nutshell, if you take your time and look around you should come across a 110v or 220v hydraulic pump. However I think the pump from Stormer 94 uses an air compressor and not a hydraulic pump but I could be wrong.
@@Pilinchi1 Watched the video - Wow! Thanks so much for your reply. Please put me on the list to buy your second pump!
We have the 70 we’re trying to find standard dies for it and no luck
I thought we saw some on ebay? no luck?
There on ebay now
@@tijman1 I'm gonna have to get a few. :)
We had to have them custom made at Cleveland punch and die in randolph Ohio hope this helps
Can you get the larger die a like 7/8"
solid question, no idea. I suppose a fella would have to poke around on the interwebz and have a look see. :)
when punching slots gotta make sure you lube up your male end
4:51 ..... That's what she said...
What psi are you set at when using pedal?
I don't think it was much, like whatever Patch had for line pressure. 110-125 or so.
@@bobstormer5398 i bought one and realized you need hydraulic pump .the foot pedal you have is that the 10k foot pedal one?
Think these would handle a 1/2 hole through 3/8 steel?
should, I think that only takes about 15 tons of force.
google - steel hole punch tonnage chart-
Blows a seal @ 7:13. Oops..
well...maybe it's better now. :D
open the beast
60 tan masein
I was impressed then I seen how sloe they run, not good for production
It didn't come with instructions ?
These did not. Current versions? Who knows.
where did you purchase the slot die?
I should have taken better notes on that. It was a random ebay find. :)
