For me, I'm currently too young for animation school, but I'm worried. Really, it's the only job I want to have. I mean yes, I like writing too, but I get burnt out doing that after chapter 1, so there's no hope there, either. I do really hope the animation industry either picks up in the future or I find another interest that can also work as a job. I'm just worried I'll have to work in a grocery store or a McDonalds.
4:22 I had this problem before, mine was most likely not knowing my own strength cause i don't exactly have an gentle touch. It could be many thing's such as anxiety, dexterity issues, not having an light touch, not having a good grip and some forms of neurodiversity/disability (Which i am both of those thing's).
I used to have this problem before! I don’t have anything like anxiety or anything but a tip I use when drawing lighter with pencil is to grab it frarther from the tip of the pencil! Maby you should try it and sorry if it doesn’t work..
I personally love life drawing the way I was taught to do it was more to simplify the body like line of action and more get the scence of the motion rarther than it being incredible relistic if you are an animator I find this a lot more applicable to basically any style and helps better simplify the body
The sad reason why the animation industry is suffering is because industries in general have very little foresight and just follow growth trends. When the pandemic hit and people were forced to stay home, people were bored and suddenly spent way more time streaming shows and playing video games. The industry sees this as a massive increase in demand and responds by investing heavily into producing more shows and games. That's why animation was booming when you were in high school. Then the pandemic died down and people went back to work, playing less games and streaming less games. And then those industries panic because now they're not making enough money to pay all those new workers they hired, so they either fire people or at least avoid hiring more. Sadly, I suspect your instructors did know and didn't want to say. After all, if all the students quit the course, the instructors would lose their jobs too. This is actually a big part of why Feral failed. When remote work became the norm and the hiring boom started, WildWorks employees realised that they could get paid more by working for bigger game studios and they wouldn't need to move because of remote work. So several of the most skilled Feral developers left the company leaving the game in limbo. Ironically, when the pandemic died down, those workers who left lost their new jobs and some had to go back to WildWorks and ask for their old jobs back.
Hearing your opinions are SO interesting because I’m just finishing the same course (you know this but just for context for others) and our opinions are SO different which is very cool’
honestly, i’m in the same boat as you, i’ve taken art classes in college and it’s so much fun but i know my chances at a career are not great, especially since i burn out quickly working on large projects. biology is my other passion so i hope to become a lab assistant or something similar 🙏
I'm having the same issue in Uni with it being so fast, I feel like I'm not learning anything just trying to pass an exam, also ill add it really depends on the school you go too, mine is currently rated one of the worst in the UK so just be careful as I really wish I had looked at reviews instead of taking the uni at face value, I am on my third year attending and so I'm just trying to get the degree and use it for something, even if it's not animation, a degree is a degree
I took an animation (screen and media) course at college which SUCKED but i think it depends on the teachers etc. Plus it was 3D modeling too so it was painful and the advance course would of been 3D animation (plus this teacher was so bad at teaching that class) so it was just very very stressful
Hey Leamon it’s Real! This was super informative, as I’m actually going to animation school next year (I got accepted 😄)! Thank you for sharing your experience ☺️
Hey Leamon, could I take inspo off of ur artstyle? :3 im trying to develop mine and yours is absolutely stunning, the way you draw eyes is mystical on ur sprite
You can always look at stuff online if you haven't watched Allan Beckers 12 principles of animation series I recomend it a lot. Also just in general just trying to start animating is a big leep and you will learn a lot by just doing. Also maybe join an animation server and ask the people for feedback soo you know what you need to improve this will help emulate how a class works.
I once used flipaclip, but it was a bad experience. I have it on my ipad but i can't animate on my laptop. also, you have to use premium just to use layers.
I find that animators recently are often able to make a better living through indie/self-made projects rather than relying on a corporate job that might drop you for Ai.. On top of that a major factor in working for companies is the benefit of having a stable job, but for creatives that’s no longer the case
My old portfolio was a lot of my older digital art that you can find on my Instagram account. ( Leamonpuppy ). And some real life drawings I had to create.

So glad you’re branching out into different types of content! I don’t play AJ anymore so it’s nice still being able to watch your videos.
Yeah I’ve decided at this point I wanna make both animal jam and drawing/ animation related content!

Hey leamon as a young artist (I’m 12) do you think I could get a animation class at the time? Like maybe out of school?
There are things like animation summer camps, just might be a bit pricey. I’d look into local classes and stuff too though
