    I’m Louisiana Creole and a common part of a proper Mardi Gras celebration is a cake called a “ king cake” that has a little plastic or ceramic baby in it called “la fève” and whoever gets the slice with the baby is king for the day!

    • @lynda.grace.14
      @lynda.grace.14 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Bonjou Ari. Glad to hear you are still following a tradition that come from the... Romans who, on the Saturne day, shared a round cake with their whole household, slaves included. The lucky one who found the bean was for the day the Prince of the household. Christians followed, eating their "galette des Rois" the 6th of january, when the Wise Men (les Rois mages) were presented to the new born Christ. Then, another tradition was added : the "King" had to buy drinks so, as you can imagine, many ate the bean... Hence the ceramique "fève", first shaped as a baby in remembrance of Jésus, then in more modern times in many shapes and colours... Voilà, voilà, Ari. Bonne journée. From Nantes 🇨🇵

    So Happy that Woody & Twiggy are home and safe. The Waes Hael was fantastic (we would eat figgy pudding). We would Yell really loud Waes Hael then take a sip of spiced cider and yell again Drinc Hael and pour some on the ground beneath the apple trees.
    "Wassail!" is a toast, literally meaning "be in good health". The reply to this is traditionally "Drink-hail!"
    Here We Come A-wassailing - not always sung in this order or in key depending on how much Wassailing (visiting neighbours orchards while drinking cider) was accomplished lol
    1. Here we come a-wassailing
    Among the leaves so green;
    Here we come a-wand'ring
    So fair to be seen.
    (Chorus)
    Love and joy come to you,
    And to you your wassail too;
    And God bless you
    And send you a Happy New Year
    And God send you a Happy New Year.
    2. Our wassail cup is made
    Of the rosemary tree,
    And so is your beer
    Of the best barley.
    (Chorus)
    3. We are not daily beggars
    That beg from door to door;
    But we are neighbours' children,
    Whom you have seen before.
    (Chorus)
    4. Call up the butler of this house,
    Put on his golden ring.
    Let him bring us up a glass of beer,
    And better we shall sing.
    (Chorus)
    5. We have got a little purse
    Of stretching leather skin;
    We want a little of your money
    To line it well within.
    (Chorus)
    6. Bring us out a table
    And spread it with a cloth;
    Bring us out a mouldy cheese,
    And some of your Christmas loaf.
    (Chorus)
    7. God bless the master of this house
    Likewise the mistress too,
    And all the little children
    That round the table go.
    (Chorus)
    8. Good master and good mistress,
    While you're sitting by the fire,
    Pray think of us poor children
    Who are wandering in the mire.
    (Chorus)
    The 12 days after Christmas - The last day marking the 1st day of the New Year or new years eve. Pagan Calendar, Celts, Nords, Vikings. The pixies, fairies, trolls & ogres beware lol

    Let me redeem myself after my prior comment and say that I absolutely loved your Wassailing ceremony! There are several definitions or variations of wassailing, but I think I like yours best of all! Hope you do it again next year. Re: the beavers. They are wild animals; hence, they are part of your "rewilding" endeavour. Now that you know they won't stay - and, if you love them - let them go. They will find their way back to you through the years - and come back each time with magical tales of their travels! Julie, I bet you could turn their adventures into a children's book.

    • @sallyannc3176

      I don't think they can be just 'let go' into the English countryside yet - tho that may change soon as they've now been classified as a 'native species' here in Scotland.

    • @findingbeautyinthepain8965
      @findingbeautyinthepain8965 ปีที่แล้ว

      They definitely can’t just let them go. They got them from an organization and promised that organization they would provide them with the correct environment, woods, food, and safety. A different environment wouldn’t have what they need. That’s why a specific enclosure was made for them. That’s why they were removed from where they were in Scotland. The environment they were living in wasn’t ideal. Most importantly, they need to be kept safe from predators, animals and humans alike. Yes, they are wild animals, but they are living in their natural habitat. It’s not like they are living in a house or cages or something awful like that. When it comes to providing a safe sanctuary for wild animals, there needs to be a balance with providing them with their natural habitat keeping them in a safe place.

    • @lorigray9291
      @lorigray9291 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@findingbeautyinthepain8965 I was unaware that they were procured from an organization to which they'd made promises. But, yes, otherwise they could be let go. They would find a suitable habitat (unless England is just bereft of such). As for predators, we are all subject to them. That's part of the natural cycle of life.

    • @findingbeautyinthepain8965
      @findingbeautyinthepain8965 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lorigray9291 Yes, their son, Nester actually helped the organization trap and relocate the beavers from Scotland to England, which is pretty cool! I could be wrong, but in one of the episodes on the beavers they explained the beavers need certain woods, a river, and certain foods, which is why they had to have the enclosure built. That is what leads me to believe that all of England or even all of Mapperton isn’t a fit environment. But I think the main thing is the predators (for now) because the goal is rewinding. I think once these beavers have some pups that live to adulthood, predators won’t be such a big deal. But if one of these beavers dies, the entire rewinding project dies with it. They could always acquire more beavers, but I think the more beavers die on their watch, the less organizations will be willing to give them more beavers. Maybe they should have gotten two males and two females from the start, so it would be much less of an issue if one falls prey to a predator. A lot of what I said is just my best educated guess based off the information Mapperton has provided us with, so I’m sure I’m wrong about some thing. I hope Julie will provide more information in another video.

    The drone shot of Mapperton in the snow is spectacular!
    It was my good fortune to spend August 1980 through February 1981 abroad, dividing the time between England, France and various Western European cities. My time in England was spent mostly in Datchet, Windsor/Eaton, Slough, Reading and Staines-upon-Thames. There were many days in London, occasional travel North to Coventry Cathedral and Oxford, South to Leeds Castle in Kent and Brighton, then West to Bath. After a trip to Wales, I traveled to the continent. It was snowing on the way to Dover where the channel crossing took place on a hovercraft during a gale. It was the only eastward crossing that day and it was horrendous! The snowfall continued in France during the SNCF train ride to Paris Gare du Nord. Since I was still seasick, I found the nearest hotel to the train station on Boulevard de Magenta. Hours after my stomach finally calmed from the effects of the channel crossing, I walked down the boulevard to see Place de la République covered in snow. There I found a Monoprix to purchase some food when it finally felt safe to eat. I can also recall a veritable blizzard on my way to Sognefjord from Bergen, Norway and a rare December snowstorm the day I left Venice.
    Chuck

    I loved all chapters. Super well produced and great new things like wassailing (Julie - I heard that as a US kid too but thought it was just begging for booze!) and loved the beaver update. Really great, thank you!

    What a fun vlog!! Glad the beavers were caught and the Wassailing was wonderful!! I am from England but did not know what Wassail meant or that tradition, was good to learn of it.

    The size of most of those "chips" makes me think "sampling", rather than "feeding".
    We're certainly rooting for you to find them!!

    Those slippers look very nice, they remind me of the LLBean “Wicked Good Slippers “, everyone in our family wears them, very warm comfortable and the outdoor sole is perfect when you have to step outdoors for the mail or run to the store. Enjoy yours!

    Living in Texas Piney woods for nearly 30 years, we have battled beavers over our pond, damming up our causeway.
    I knew y'all would have issues......

    The beaver story was really great to watch. It appears that it may be harder than you thought to get them to fix your watershed. I don't blame them. What happens when they've done the work that you want? What would it take to let them wander freely?

    We sang this song as kids in southern Indiana, but I always assumed that wassailing meant caroling. Learn something new every day :D
    Here we come a-wassailing Among the leaves so green; Here we come a-wand'ring So fair to be seen.
    Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year And God send you a Happy New Year.
    Our wassail cup is made Of the rosemary tree, And so is your beer Of the best barley.
    We are not daily beggars That beg from door to door; But we are neighbours' children, Whom you have seen before.
    Call up the butler of this house, Put on his golden ring. Let him bring us up a glass of beer, And better we shall sing.
    We have got a little purse Of stretching leather skin; We want a little of your money To line it well within.
    Bring us out a table And spread it with a cloth; Bring us out a mouldy cheese, And some of your Christmas loaf.
    God bless the master of this house Likewise the mistress too, And all the little children That round the table go.
    Good master and good mistress, While you're sitting by the fire, Pray think of us poor children Who are wandering in the mire.

    We love Chameau wellies. They come in RED ,blue, ,purple green ,yellow and black. They are nice and flexible so they don't crack across the ball of the foot and leak after the first season like the famed Hunter Boots.

    I imagine I'd dress like Julie inside many areas of that big stone house. I bet sometimes a warm little mud hut could feel like an answer to a prayer. I've been wondering this whole time how they would keep the dear little beavers contained. It's hard to imagine it. I'm also wondering what is the point of the beaver endeavor; is it to eventually reintroduce them into the wild, or is it to keep them at Mapperton, or to breed them for other places needing beavers back in the environment? "¯\_(ツ)_/¯" Is there somewhere I can read up on the project? I've watched several videos that they've featured in. I find it really fascinating, and I'd love to know more about it. Anyway, lovely video as usual. Thank you so much!

    Probably the beavers found their living quarters not really satisfying all the requirements, something might be missing.
