Lonzo Ball - Lockdown Potential Part 1 (2021)

  • This project will be by far the most time consuming one, VERY hard to make videos on 1v1 defense since the footage is random and you never know the exact scenarios of good defense.
Basically it's much easier to make a steals or blocks video because it's all organized in one category, but 1v1 defense is all random and based on what you find - so it requires a lot of time searching through games.
ALSO, there is NO SIMPLE WAY to find clips on off ball defense such as denying the ball or forcing a pass - there is no way to find these clips EXCEPT downloading a full game which is ridiculous and basically impossible for my 20mb internet.
And eitherway, including those clips would make the workload unbearable - so just take into account that there are clips such as the beginning where the commentator says "lonzo is doing a good job on curry off the ball" that imply his performance that I can't show to you.
There are too many elements of defense for me to be able to represent them all in a limited amount of time. As well as lonzo is an excellent help defender but it's also hard to present.
What I will say though, is that lonzo definitely has lockdown potential - some of you might say he ALREADY is.
And I won't disagree with you, but I won't agree either - because I want to leave room for improvement, and I believe lonzo still has a lot of room to grow as a defender.
His primary weaknesses as a defender are the following.
    1. Sometimes gets caught ball watching and loses track of his player, happens to a lot of players but with his level of ability it shouldn't be - TO BE FAIR, he IS an excellent HELP defender - so sometimes it is a gamble whether he should help / attempt a steal etc.
    2. Level of commitment, it may be due to his current paycheck and him believing he deserves more or just fear of injury. But lonzo does have instances where you watch him and you say to yourself .. he just gave up.
With his speed, good wingspan, solid vertical, active hands, defensive knowledge - there are times where he can DEFINITELY do more, but from a superficial perspective it looks like he just gave up and allowed a bucket without more effort. Who knows, maybe he made the right decision and avoided a foul or something. But I personally believe, he can definitely DO MORE in many instances and that's another reason why I don't consider him a lockdown YET.
    3. Predicting the first step, one of the most difficult things to guard in this league is guards who have an explosive first step and blow by you. Now yes, you could argue this is unguardable and practically everyone struggles with it. But I believe lonzo has the lateral quickness to better guard this, and he will cut off offensive players more and more successfully as his career goes on.
That being said, the NBA is the best league in the world and offense can beat great defense - this is why I included clips in the video where the players still made the shots despite lonzo's defense.
Realistically there is no such thing as "Lockdown defense" it's just a cool phrase, but let's be real - great offense can beat great defense, it's just how it is - everyone tries to stop curry but you can only try to make it harder for him.
A lot of players considered "Lockdown defenders" often get into foul trouble, as time goes by the league punishes defense more and more and it becomes more about whether the player is hot that game or not.
In conclusion, lonzo has a lot of potential to be one of the best defenders in the league. Is he already? depends on your standards and personal POV.
If you enjoy these videos and want me to make more of these defense videos in particular - please consider donating since these videos can't be monetized

It's also a matter of whether his opponent still scored or not, it's easy for people to discredit defensive effort when the matchup still scores - for example curry and lillard are almost impossible to stop when hot, and since they had great games it's easy for people to ignore lonzo's good defense and make fun of him for everything else. Not saying he's perfect it's just that defense is not as credited as making shots. With defense people mostly focus on your mistakes, nba fans can be quite negative and impatient.

    • @ballfamilyhighlights3236
      @ballfamilyhighlights3236  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

He is definitely taken for granted, it's just a matter of people paying attention only to the things they can easily see - everyone can look at the boxscore and complain that he missed shots, but the things you don't pay attention to are sometimes the most important. And to be fair these things are easy to forget because these type of videos are RARE since they are very time consuming. There's a reason why defensive videos are mostly a compilation of steals and blocks, read the description for more details on the process.

Because the Pelicans are trash on defense, scheme wise. Team defense does help a player's case and it also affects the advanced stats. Because defense is not just on ball defense. Stuff like help defense from your teammates affects it a lot. Like, Lonzo could get all the steals he wants but he would need to take some risk, and usually your teammates cover that. You can rotate to protect the rim from a drive but if your teammates doesn't rotate to your man, you'll leave somebody open. You can get caught on screens but if your teammates helps you by hedging, it would be so much easier to contain your man.

Since I watch full seasons of lonzo, there's benefit to whoever his teammates are - I also take interest in their abilities and will highlight them. Look around youtube, you won't easily find a josh hart video if at all - it's always the big names. Even though these guys are millionaires it must kind of suck to not see anyone make videos showcasing your specific abilities, unless you have a breakout year and then everyone acts like they were fans all along lol.

The cool thing about doing niche verticals in any type of work is that there is always core audience there beyond the hype waves that keeps steady interest bc that's their flavor. Yo mind is all the way original + I appreciate that. Express your eyes and how you see hoop. This is a very old school way of looking at the game. New York-ish. The Mecca. MSG along with old Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium, is the most educated arena for the purists that geek out over the fundamentals of the Game of *playing the right way.* Which is why many of us think Lonzo would do so well there. In fact a guy like J Hart would be adored in that market. The Basketball landscape is very wide. If U built a chart 📈📉 regardless of eras, peaks + valleys, fundamentals is what transcends + translates across hoop History.. Rebounding I like that vertical. Pound for pound. Same thing with curry, lillard - you think just because I posted defensive clips agaisn't those players they didn't have great games? ofc they did.
Great defense doesn't mean the offensive player won't score, if that's what you believe there is no point in watching these videos since you are misguided.
And as for the plays agaisn't chicago, it says part 1 for a reason - there are too many defensive plays to fit into one video, and these videos are very time consuming to make. I can't monetize these videos, I have a job and a life.
So yea, don't jump to conclusions mate. There are definitely highlights agaisn't chicago on both ends, watch my part 2 ... literally there, and finally terrible is an exaggeration and you will likely end up hating him if that's what you saw .. but it's more of a you issue.
