I like how this gives a different perspective on the pressures on the King. There’s so many different opinions, it’s difficult to know what truly happened. Everyone has a bias. He didn’t seem like he wanted to rule, however he wanted a lesser role, like the one of being a spare.
Edward VIII was not that dutiful as a king, he might have the heart, but not the capacity. Also he picked a wrong woman to love. He mistakenly thought that he could choose whatever way he would like as a monarchy king, which was not the case. There was the establishments of the adminstration, church, and the royal court, which could support him or against him. After all the abdication was too severe, and he was not politically mature enough to handle the crisis. 🕹
That was a fair play. On the establishment side, they raised concerns about a possible situation to have an American divorcee becoming a British Queen consort, although this might not be a big issue on nowadays. While the establishment may push and stress their agenda, and play hard, they could not really depose the king constitutionally since the situation never reach that gravity. On the Edward VIII side, he had all winning odds: he could dissolve parliament to get a possible new PM, or just live through couple years to let British people get used to this new situation, the time and people were on his side, but he didn't give the time they needed. Eventually, Edward VIII chose to abdicate, either he walked away from the struggle to a true love, or he just didn't have enough stamina and capacity to fight a good fight. Both views of suggesting a traitor king or a coup against the King are conspiracy fictions.
I've been studying the latest books in the abdication and the fear are that swirled around it. Frankly, I think this video is a whitewash in favor of Wally and David
This video takes no position on this matter, and tries to present views on both sides, might not be enough. In fact, because of the abdication, it dramatically weakened the political influence of monarch to the country after this crisis, and weakened the country's international stature as well. The monarch literally had became ceremonial host or a public stunt, such as a royal weddings, anniversary events, and recent photo editing. After all, the king's behaviors didn't reach the gravity of that punishment, and the country paid the price.
