Idk to me there were always three main factors that made me fall in love with the car. The paint job. The blue and silver just look so good and the way it's painted is just so "sharp" in a way it makes you think "damn that car is going to be fast" without even seeing it run. The body kit. The way it's built makes it look "bulky" and then when you actually drive it, it's nimble in a way but also powerful and very fast so the way it drives contradicts the way it looks. And for me (and I think for many other people too) most importantly, the sound. Come on, who doesn't love feeling like you're piloting a plane in the shape of a car because that's what the M3 GTR engine sound always reminded me of, it's such a satisfying sound that was so beautifully imitated in the game.
you have to remember too that at the time kids probably saw the m3 gtr racing irl and when they saw in a street racing game and "experienced" they were like "wow"
That's true, although I was born in 2005 so I missed the M3 hype xD, my first contact with the game was probably in 2015 watching my cousins play the game and then playing it myself
The sound you were hearing is the race transmission, which every racing car have till this day, imaging everyone had tuners, muscle cars, and exotics, then here comes you with a racing bred car that is not supposed to be on the street, that feeling and idea of it was what makes the game so crazy back then. And it still is to this day, if you can get a gt3 car converted for street use, that’s a crazy car to have.
In the very early stages of MW development, the Player's car was supposed to be a white Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) with a red vinyl and a JGTC racing bodykit, this can be seen in the "behind the scenes" and CoreX "raz" videos (most of these were placeholders tho). This was changed later to a full red BMW M3 GTR with yellow headlights, then a silver M3 GTR with a red vinyl and then the final design we all know. Extra fun fact: it's canon that the Player drives an Audi A4 in the final race against Razor, as the car can be seen reflected on Razor's M3 door in the cutscene before the race.
@@filipbanas5968 yeah it's not exactly the same. Silver and white are different shades and quality but they are the same tone. The Blue is what they share the same. As the result , this paint job represent the BMW logo color scheme.

It's still funny that O'Connors R34 is so iconic despite barely being in one movie but seems to have inspired the MW M3 GTR livery to some extent. It truly was the game it was made for that made the car iconic (in gaming). I'm pretty sure the same could be said for so many other cars if they were put in the same position instead...
My theory is this noticing how all the NFS games starting from Underground 1 until now the Nissan Skyline R34 has been in every single game EXCEPT for Most Wanted could it also be possible that the Most Wanted BMW was ment to be the R34 Gtr but something happened behind the scenes that caused Nissan to not appear in the game and EA needed a replacement and it just so happened to be a car that had the letter GT R already in it
I didn't find anything to suggest that, but the logic checks out, sure! What you said would even explain the choice of color for the M3 GTR... it's blue and silver... like the Skyline GTR from 2 Fast 2 Furious... so maybe the colors were also chosen to build on an existing bond in player's minds with these colors

It is not just that, it is the strange allure and the intrigue of being someone that nobody knows, that appears from anywhere and that in fact, is a wolf in a sheep's clothing capable of obliterating its peers. It is that magical aura.
Anyone born after 2005? Being born in the 90s like many here, I'm wondering what's your thoughts of the Most Wanted game? Is it old with outdated graphics and old gameplay? Or did you jump on it and loved it maybe more than the newer games?
Even tho I’m not fan of BMWs and love Japanese cars + I love the underrated Pro Street cars, the NFS MW’s BMW screams NFS, it’s just so iconic, different that there is no other option as a flagship car for the series
The most funniest thing is that EA chosen the worst enemy for a Porsche - it's big rival that dominated ALMS and crashed Porsche so hard that they pressed on regulators to change the rules and prevent BMW from total domination :D
Better question: “why does EA continue to call back to NFS MW by including the M3 GTR as a nostalgia bait cash grab, but refuse to actually make a good game/proper sequel/remake of the best selling and most popular NFS ever?” Why do we keep getting schlock that everyone has to convince themselves they like with nostalgia sprinkled in? Counterpoint: The BMW M3 GTR is mostly only loved because people love NFS Most Wanted (2005) and because to Americans it "looks exotic" since it's a European car. As a European I don't get the hype, it's just a BMW. I saw the M3 on the daily when I grew up and always associated it with assholes (since it was mostly young people that got the car from their daddy, loudly pressing the throttle, driving fast in areas where kids play etc.) I don't think it's an ugly car, but it's so basic. The 350Z from Rachel is so much better looking, even if her livery is kinda ass. The Skyline from Eddie is even better. Heck, I would prefer the 240SX from Ryan Cooper than an M3 GTR. I mean, in the end I guess people are people but I just never really understood why a car like the M3, especially with its extremely basic livery is so loved over other NFS cars. Izzy's RX8 is much better looking (one of the few good liveries in MW2005, idk what happened during development but most of them are really not that good)
NFS Most Wanted definitely is the reason why this car is so beloved, but I don't think it "looks exotic to Americans" the way you think it is. In the same game we have Lamborghini, Porsche, and Aston Martin. They're definitely much more exotic looking compared to a car that at a glance looks like a highly modified executive car. Even the Mercedes cars that are available in NFS MW looks much more exotic than this BMW. But I think the contrast between "generic car for some guy in a suit" base design and the "street racing modifications" are partly what make this car memorable. When I first played this game, I didn't even know at all that this BMW is an actual race car. I thought the high stats of the car is just something they made up because it's an endgame car and it's obvious that this game isn't a realistic racing game. When the more realistic Prostreet came out and put the E46 M3 as a early-mid game car, I just thought it's the same car as this M3 GTR and that the Prostreet M3 has a more reasonable spec because it's a much more realistic game.
Counter-counter point: that's the point of having a BMW M3 race car as told to be your first car. You play as the A-hole who stole a race car from a racetrack, which was already an illegal race car already, and dominate illegal street racing scene. It's not that complicated to figure out why.
Sometimes I think the reason why they picked M3 GTR for the game because it's not a road-legal car and only meant for track-use thus making it the "most wanted"
So is basically becayse BMW paid EA...I always have find out curious that it has become so famous when it wasn´t even the best car in it´s own game (both the Carrera GT and Elise were better, and the Porsches were also close)
Not gonna lie, when I saw this car on the cover, I thought that EA made a bad choice because of an another racing that I played called Total immersion racing. That game had a TERRIBLE sense of speed!!! They had also the M3 GTR but it felt so slow despite hitting top speed in that game, but my perspective changed completely for the better when I drove the same car in NFS Most Wanted!
I always put the paint in white to match the color of the logo. Which makes it really BMW But hey, do you all wonder why NFS didn't include the Ferraris?
Another car that could represent the series? Call me old school, but I would say the Porsche 911 3.6 Turbo (993). It was the flagship car of both NFS: High Stakes and NFS: Porsche Unleashed. Thar car came back, although as a Carrera instead of a Turbo, in NFS: Payback and NFS: Unbound. The Lamborghini Diablo could be a good 3rd option, as it was NFS III flagship car and appeared in several installments of the series as well, as it is the R34 Skyline, which tends to be the face of the import Tuner theme and THE car in both NFS: Underground games. Your thoughts?
It's a good question. There were other famous cars such as Nissan GTR34 in Underground 1, 350Z in Underground 2, Lancer Evo in Carbon while the new GTR35 in Prostreet.
I just love the fact that NFS franchise always try to avoid adding Ferraris in the game. 😂 You rarely see any Ferrari in any NFS games. I think the only cars back in 2005 which had potential to replace M3 GTR would've been Bugatti Veyron and Jaguar XJ220.
we wish for the next installment, the villain cars have to be the ones that defeated the M3 GTR irl (550 GTS, Zakspeed Viper, 911 Manthey, and then Esperante GTLM, yeah the beginner car from grid? beat this thing) and then introduce the M3 GTR's worthy successor and if today's GT regs are used as reference...its a Porsche (unfortunately)
I actually saw the car first time in gran turismo 4. It was a very strange car. I heard it had reliability problems and bmw scrapped the car all together. As much as I like the car you rarely have it in the game for like 2 races and that’s it.
I love the BMW, however to me, the Nissan Skyline seems like it fits as the nfs mascot. Maybe it’s because nfs under ground was my first nfs game. But my opinion still stands.
It still doesn't answer the question "why THIS racecar". Why not, for example, Viper GTS, which had more success under its belt and more familiar as a car to the target american audience

I guess my top 5 cars would be like:
Darius Supra (NFSC)
Scorpios Evo (NFSC)
BMW M3 (NFS:MW)
Cross Corvette (NFSC specifically)
Izzy's RX8 (NFS:MW)
Most wanted was named after the car, not the player, and the player needed to match the same status to earn it back.

It is not just that, it is the strange allure and the intrigue of being someone that nobody knows, that appears from anywhere and that in fact, is a wolf in a sheep's clothing capable of obliterating its peers. It is that magical aura.
I like this theme you wrote. Makes sense actually
I remember in a Codemasters game named Race Driver GRID there was a Toyota Supra. Bro, I really loved that car!
Lamborghini Murcielago(max upgraded) vs BMW M3 GTR E46 ALMS GT. Who'll win, bro(your opinion)?
I wanna say the Lamborghini Murcielago... but I feel like the M3 GTR will have a big chance to beat the Lamborghini...
@@Asphalt.X In the final of the game, max engine power: 1150hp, bro(upgrade- from: Razor)
Your starting movement is best thank you editor
It's from Odonata Cinema 👍🏻
Anyone born after 2005?
Being born in the 90s like many here, I'm wondering what's your thoughts of the Most Wanted game? Is it old with outdated graphics and old gameplay? Or did you jump on it and loved it maybe more than the newer games?
Thanks a lot for this explanation
Honestly I was wondering why they chose the M3 GTR myself, so I thought why not find out why and share the information.
@@Asphalt.X I respect that
Straight to the point, NFSMW is a advertisement ?
Even tho I’m not fan of BMWs and love Japanese cars + I love the underrated Pro Street cars, the NFS MW’s BMW screams NFS, it’s just so iconic, different that there is no other option as a flagship car for the series
The most funniest thing is that EA chosen the worst enemy for a Porsche - it's big rival that dominated ALMS and crashed Porsche so hard that they pressed on regulators to change the rules and prevent BMW from total domination :D
The silver blue white Supra from the intro of need for speed carbon
Better question: “why does EA continue to call back to NFS MW by including the M3 GTR as a nostalgia bait cash grab, but refuse to actually make a good game/proper sequel/remake of the best selling and most popular NFS ever?” Why do we keep getting schlock that everyone has to convince themselves they like with nostalgia sprinkled in? If they acknowledge the superiority of MW 05, why not just build on THAT?
The m3 gtr deserves to stay iconic 😎
Really love driving a real race car in game where are only road cars or "tuner" cars and outperforming Supra or Skyline 😂
You mean like a "power" trip?
I feel like the M3 GTR has reached overhyped status now
Why do you think so?
@@Asphalt.X Because it's everywhere, even in NFS, in the recent games it's been everywhere. I understand it's a cool car and it's the most iconic NFS car, but give it a break already, we've seen it a million times
Bring back the React Team RX7, or Jack Rouke's Mustang, or the Mustang from the NFS movie, or the Samurai Integra from UG1
There are so many other great cars that they don't bring back
@@clutch44444 I feel like you're full of it.
M3 GTR replicas are more likely to happen than the aforementioned RX7 or Mustangs.
@@alexfischer7876 What I'm saying is that we've seen this car so much now, so much so that it's getting to the point that I'm sick of seeing it and starting to not like the car anymore
@@clutch44444
Too bad for you. For me, it's _The Holy Grail of Video Game Racing._ It just cemented itself in that position so much that it's de-facto THE CAR anyone desires.
Counterpoint: The BMW M3 GTR is mostly only loved because people love NFS Most Wanted (2005) and because to Americans it "looks exotic" since it's a European car. As a European I don't get the hype, it's just a BMW. I saw the M3 on the daily when I grew up and always associated it with assholes (since it was mostly young people that got the car from their daddy, loudly pressing the throttle, driving fast in areas where kids play etc.)
I don't think it's an ugly car, but it's so basic.
This is the brand icon of nfs.
Because BMW begged EA to be in their game after they tried to put Corvette instead
Interesting? Got a source for that fact? I'd love to explore it
Not gonna lie, when I saw this car on the cover, I thought that EA made a bad choice because of an another racing that I played called Total immersion racing. That game had a TERRIBLE sense of speed!!! They had also the M3 GTR but it felt so slow despite hitting top speed in that game, but my perspective changed completely for the better when I drove the same car in NFS Most Wanted!
I wonder who has been here or a fan since underground and underground 2 and hot pursuits?
after MW , NFS forgot how to make the next hero car.
also, it being a car you only see like 3 times in the story made people want to get it just to drive
I always put the paint in white to match the color of the logo. Which makes it really BMW
But hey, do you all wonder why NFS didn't include the Ferraris?
I like M3 GTR, which means fantastical aerodynamics for a great passion. 💙⚡
You provided exactly 0 information about why EA chose the BMW M3 GTR, it was all AI generated generic yapping
I guess you missed the part about giving legitimacy to the game and how the M3 GTR symbolizes being the "most wanted".
But why did they choose BMW M3 GTR?
Please tell me how you did the cutout! I’m begging
You mean the thumbnail?
Most Wanted BMW vs Asphalt Yellow Lamborghini
It's a good question. There were other famous cars such as Nissan GTR34 in Underground 1, 350Z in Underground 2, Lancer Evo in Carbon while the new GTR35 in Prostreet.
You're right, no one talks enough about the Evo from Carbon even though it was literally on the cover. The same applies to NFS Shift
Not to mention EA had a Porsche exclusivity license and never pushed to make a Porsche hero car.
@ that's a good point actually, seems like a no brainer. Although maybe they didn't wanna seem like they're abusing or pushing it!
I just love the fact that NFS franchise always try to avoid adding Ferraris in the game. 😂
You rarely see any Ferrari in any NFS games.
I think the only cars back in 2005 which had potential to replace M3 GTR would've been Bugatti Veyron and Jaguar XJ220.
Yeah you're right, I think the only Ferrari's you find are in Hot Pursuit, Rivals and some classic titles maybe
@@Asphalt.X They also appear in NFS Heat
@@markdebruyn1212 oh yeah! Forgot about that!
@@Asphalt.X they also appear in NFS 2015 and Unbound
Really? I remember playing around with them a bunch in Hot Pursuit 2... not that they were my favorites... that went to the CLK-GTR NFS edition.
i don’t think EA bought out NFS until 2017 when payback came out
You mean they didn't have full control 'til 2017?
@ yeah
@@timeIesz interesting, I thought they owned BlackBox since 2002. Therefore they should have control over the product.
It's not "bee em double u"
it's "be em vee"
we wish for the next installment, the villain cars have to be the ones that defeated the M3 GTR irl (550 GTS, Zakspeed Viper, 911 Manthey, and then Esperante GTLM, yeah the beginner car from grid? beat this thing) and then introduce the M3 GTR's worthy successor and if today's GT regs are used as reference...its a Porsche (unfortunately)
You forgot Cross' Corvettes 💀
The funny thing is that Cross' Corvette was a Le Man's racer as well.
just bought M3 GT2 Hot Wheels NEON model, just because of this game
I actually saw the car first time in gran turismo 4. It was a very strange car. I heard it had reliability problems and bmw scrapped the car all together. As much as I like the car you rarely have it in the game for like 2 races and that’s it.
The real question is who designed that iconic BMW?
Every mans dream car
I love the BMW, however to me, the Nissan Skyline seems like it fits as the nfs mascot. Maybe it’s because nfs under ground was my first nfs game. But my opinion still stands.
It still doesn't answer the question "why THIS racecar". Why not, for example, Viper GTS, which had more success under its belt and more familiar as a car to the target american audience
Old head here, not Diablo old but nothing more NFS to me than a bright yellow Murcielago 🐂 🇮🇹
Hot Pursuit 2?
Also, its an exclusive limited edition ROAD ILLEGAL car. Its a sign of "f you" to street law enforcers, as the theme suggest

i thought they chose it bc it was banned in GT race at the time.
