Today I am teaching you everything you need to use iMovie. If this video helps you, I'd love to hear your feedback in the comments section below. Enjoy and stay safe!
Since, remote learning I have been fooling around with iMovie to create my read-a-loud videos for my online class. Thank you for the video, it was super helpful. During my lunch today I plan to watch your video of the Sagrada de Familia in Barcelona that you made with iMovie.
Hey David i'm a newbie with video editing, but I have been a teacher for 15 years. You definitely have a knack for explaining things! Thanks so much, your video was really helpful!
This is the first time since 1993 (when I got my first mac) that i have since instructions so clearly offered. The use of shortcuts is a first. Never seen any tutorial do that. Something I do when I am showing someone how to use a program. Saves so much time.
as soon as he said "free PDF" I immediately subscribed. the amount of people that milk as much money as they possibly can out of people nowadays is insane. this guy seems awesome!
I started teaching film/tv at MUIC Mahidol University when Kantana hired me to start the program there. iMovie started all. iMovie has changed lots from when it was for everyone.
This tutorial is really excellent. You cover a lot of information quickly but that's exactly how to teach these techniques because the viewer can always go back to review and you cover a broad spectrum of information in the shortest possible time. This will help a lot of people.
David, I am a returning IMovie user from years past (actually the very first IMovie} and have been re-ignited by your " Full Tutorial" The software has changed drastically since the first edition but your explanation has made it easy to jump right back into video editing. Who says " you can't teach old dogs new tricks" . Thank you . . .
As a retired lecturer I assess this as an excellent educational tutorial, thank you very much. There is a lot to take in but my intention is to work through this several times until I’ve got a reasonable skill level. I’m not going to bother looking for an alternative. Excellent job, well done, thanks again.
You teached me how to edit in half an hour! Thank you for that! You are great! Keep up the good work! Oh and thank you for not putting a bunch of ads in your videos!
Today I found myself needing to edit a video form a zoom call. I haven’t used iMovie since 2019. This video was exactly what I needed. It saved me a lot of time trying to remember how do use the basic functions. Thanks!
Help! Beautiful video by the way! I have made a few iMovie's in the past and all was well until I started to do more work on it tonight and the music plays and the thumbnail photos show up on the timeline but they don't show up on the movie screen. There are no warnings or prompts. Any idea why the movie screen is black when the photos are in the timeline?
The source image is probably gone and although iMovie shows the thumbnails, it can't play the missing clip portions. Not crazy about the way iMovie manages the files as it completely trashes the events and not only removes them from its playlist when you get rid of them thinking they're safe within the program. At least, that's what happened to me...you'll be fine if you can find the original clips - just upload them again to your project : ) Hope that helps!
thanks bro, to many people in these kinds of videos are overly energetic and try to maintain a hyper persona that makes understanding the actual tutorial a complete mess, it was nice to get a clear cut tutorial explained in such a nice and calm way for once!
I am new to the Mac and iMovie app and as I hovered over other IMovie tutorial videos ( even the latest ones done this year) here in YT, I find yours the simplest to understand. Great teaching!
I’m a 70 yr old beginner & this video helps me so much! Many thanks! My goal is to create a multi section video story. I’ve got lots of videos I need to cut sections from the middle. But I’m not sure how. You cover the beginning & end points, but not the (sometimes many) middle points. I’ve got to get rid of long pauses & tighten each video. Have you covered that in a different instructional video? Thanks again!!
Loved watching your final movie cut. We were supposed to go this July with our entire family (10) to Spain but postponed it until 2021. Thank you as always great tutorial, easy enough for me to follow.
You are a Heaven sent Genius for a newbie in TH-cam like me.I am using iMovie because that's all i have at this point and i am using it the hard & tedious way until i viewed this video. Thank You so much. More Power to your Channel. Stay Safe as well.
This is the first tutorial I've ever watched on iMovie, and after playing with it while watching the tutorial, I was able to bang out an acceptable practice movie. Thanks, Tech Talk!
Huge thanks! This has to be one of the most comprehensive and clearest iMovie tutorials available - and all in less than 25 minutes. How great is that...? Throw in a freebie PDF cheat sheet and this is an absolute banger! Many thanks!
Hey there, thanks for your tutorial. Its made my editing much much faster. I'm at this stage where I want my videos to look more professional - have an intro section with music and some effects and also have some animation for the text during the video. I find it impossible to do that on iMovie. Do I need to upgrade to Final Cut Pro considering the kind of videos I am making? Or is there some other way?
Words can't describe how helpful this video was! I printed the PDF and that made a world of a difference! My iMovie's before I watched this video were just okay, but now after watching this video they look professional! You just gained a sub! Keep it up! Thanks a ton!!
This video was just what I needed to edit some video interviews that I shot for an upcoming women's conference at my church. You provided enough information with clear instructions and not more than I needed. The PDF is a great resource. Within an hour of watching the tutorial I had edited two interviews and I'm very pleased with the outcome. I will have five more to go and I feel prepared to tackle the task. THANKS!
This was the best software tutorial that I've seen. You really saved me so much time figuring out the basic layout and tools and your presentation was excellent. Thanks!
I heartily echo other people here in saying that though I have made several videos with iMovie, I learned more things here! And your clear way of speaking and positivity made the learning experience even better! Thank you for a great tutorial!
Ah, yes. At the very beginning, the file management. That was exactly my first question as soon as I started importing files - where do they go? Thanks for the tutorial.
30 years ago, a person would need a film crew and a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to produce that. Now, anyone can. Thank You, David. Very helpful video. I'm looking forward to creating some videos. Gonna get in the game!
Mark just gives you a visual representation. In my case it’s an indication that that moment (usually the downbeat) would be a good moment to cut to another shot
I bet even yourself can NOT believe how much time you helped me to save for learning these instructions that I was looking for in order to handle even simple task I was unable. Thanks ;-)
Wonderful tutorial and resources, David! Although I have been playing on iMovie (and Final Cut) since 2000, I can truly say there was so much i learnt from your tutorial that i didn’t know before. Shortcut keys were great. Some of which i already knew, but there were many that I ‘vaguely recall’ using at some stage somewhere in history ! ... but have since totally forgotten all about !!! So thank you for great awesome shortcut refreshers! Your pdf guide is magical and such an insane superb resource. Thanks for sharing. BTW, your video footage and colour correction enhancements are just amazing! Maybe some lessons next time on “how to” re-shooting video. Love your silky smooth (as opposed to my own often “jerky”) footage. Superb tutorial! Regards from Oz
Awesome video! Thank you. Quick question... when placing marks to pair up with the audio, what do you often look for? I notice while watching you pair transitions with big changes in the audio but is there anything else? Thanks!
Any idea why they changed the smallest cut you can make from 3 frames to 6 frames on the last update. It's fact but when I call in nobody seems to be able to understand the question.
Interesting. You can still use the right arrow key 3 times and it will cut at 0.1 second. What frame rate is your video? I'M A NEW CHANNEL! PLEASE CHECK IT OUT! SEE IF IT'S FOR YOU! THANKS!
Hello David! Just wanted to thank you for this AWESOME tutorial! I just started using Apple Mac and I'm a complete beginner on I-Movie, your video not just helped a lot but you also delivered the knowledge in such a fun, smooth and clear way that I have really enjoyed it! You made me so excited to start playing around and creating beautiful videos! thank you for that you're a great teacher! BTW, wonderful captures from Spain! made me want to visit there as well :) all the best!
Thanks David - I am a first timer for attempt to make a Home Movie on iMovie. Your tutorial was informative giving a good insight of how to proceed. Thanks again
by far the best tutorial on iMovie. I wish to understand more on the M=mark short-key. Would appreciate if you could explain more on how to sync the music.
I've never taken iMovie seriously before coming from FCP 7, Premier and Vegas Pro background until recently. I was gifted a mac mini and since we've started shooting with iPhones more (always handy!) rediscovered it. Looking for tutorials and this popped up. Well worth the watch and cut to the heart of useful info! And thanks for the PDF!
Im just starting out with video editing, posting etc, mainly out of boredom during the pandemic, my videos are awful but it keeps me active whilst stuck inside. This is the best tutorial i have found so far, ill definitely change from go pro studio. thanks for your time and effort.
Brilliant David - my first attempt will be with your tutorial running on the laptop whilst I create on my Mac - I will search for more of your tutorials - Pierre
David Cox inspires me with clear and concise instructions, well articulated and artistic video footages in such a short time. Love it ! Thank you Dave !
Thank you! That was well explained! Not too fast and not too slow. I love how you have links to resources that are helpful for you. I will definitely be using them!
thank you for making this video. I have watched it a couple of times. But I would love for you to be able to breakdown the video and place timing in the description of specific topics. I have found to come back to this video several times to ensure I get the steps correct and then find myself searching for the topic.
this is truly nice! I am a beginner that will do vlogging and knows nothing about video editing. This video tutorial is just what I need. Its straight to the point, concise and easy to understand. Thank you very much for this, David!
Thank you David for the quality of your tutorial. There are so many informations that I think I'll review it a thousand time. You are a really good teacher and I think I will try a private course with you soon.
Ya, Kinda LOL I am very new to this. This is the first time looking into doing editing. I just retired from trucking of 30 crazy years. I just bought the mac mini base model. I have always had an iPhone & IPAD and never realized what to do with them but listen to music and watch TH-cam. The Mac is way different and I do not have a clue, That is what makes it fun until i downloaded Google Crome then everything worked that i had on my PC. Sorry to ramble on but you teach it very smooth for a guy like me that nows about this as dirt. So thank you for all your help. I believe you have other videos on how to enter the Apple world and will be watching for them. Stay safe
Great video. Went there 20 years ago and it was full of scaffolding! I've learnt a lot about editing video. I've always been a stills snapper now retired. Take care and regards from the UK.
That location is absolutely exquisite and loved the way you put the video clips together. thanks for this tutorial. Super efficient. Loved that you spoke fast to get through a lot of content and all the tips, fantastic. Thank You again.
I haven't finished your tutorial yet but want to say thank you so much! I have been using imovie for years and this is the first tutorial i have watch - i really wish I had years ago. Thank you for all your time and effort 11 minutes in and I have already learned so much that is going to have me working way faster. xo
I'm a complete low-fi kind of person and very much a newb to video editing ... but this was great and gives me the confidence that I can do what I set out to initially!
Thank you for a great tutorial ! I understood how to make a Mark in the time line but I was totally lost between 8:00 - 9:25. If you can give us a gist of what you were doing there that would be great. Thanks again.
What he’s doing is.. is he marks areas that makes the audio to sync or relate to the scene. Building up “suspense” or “leading” into the next scene. I would watch that part over and over to get it down. It is a bit confusing, but it’s an awesome effect!!
Thank you for this very instructional video! I'm a photographer who's starting taking short video clips and I need to learn how to edit. Adobe Premiere is beyond me right now, so I decided to try iMovie. Your video helps tremendously! Thank you!
I learnt so much more in these few minutes compared to hours looking elsewhere. Great insightful tips that will drastically improve my editing. There are many decisions made in your video which are fast forwarded over, such as reordering and recutting clips. It would be great to hear more about the decision process about how you reorder, and choose clips, how to edit and how to edit to the soundtrack. There is a lovely crescendo in the final cut, which you are obviously editing your cuts to which you can really feel. Would be great to hear more about the creative decisions you make: when to keep a clip, when to ditch it, when to shorten etc. Great work. I can't thank you enough.
Love your finished product. Perfect music to go along with the visuals.... thanks for sharing your knowledge... I'm such a newbie at my age but let's see....
Great tutorial. I have iMovie and am a beginner but felt lost on just the starting of my video, your basic examples and shortcuts, especially using the keyboard keys was a big help. Thanks
Today I am teaching you everything you need to use iMovie. If this video helps you, I'd love to hear your feedback in the comments section below. Enjoy and stay safe!
Can the audio marks be given descriptive tags or notation etc. ? Or colour coded?
Great work! Thank you.
Really terrific. Venmo this gent, folks!

I enjoyed this video. I understood 70% of this, but the other 30% I wish David would explain or slow down or something. I'm just a newb.

Mark just gives you a visual representation. In my case it’s an indication that that moment (usually the downbeat) would be a good moment to cut to another shot
Tech Talk America Thank you so much
I bet even yourself can NOT believe how much time you helped me to save for learning these instructions that I was looking for in order to handle even simple task I was unable. Thanks ;-)
What if you don’t have a computer and only iPhone? Can you do a edit through iMovie app video?
Sure
Yes you can I do it all the time
Justin Doyle thanks
Beautiful class bravo 👏🏽 thank you very much for the knowledge
I've been away from movie editing for quite sometime and your class instruction has re-ignited my passion. Well presented, many thanks.
Let’s do this!! Sub to me!!!
The best tutorial ever! Thanks so much. I've learned a lot!
Me too!!
Thank you from one teacher to another. This was outstanding!
Awesome video! Thank you. Quick question... when placing marks to pair up with the audio, what do you often look for? I notice while watching you pair transitions with big changes in the audio but is there anything else? Thanks!
Brilliant! I’ve just gone from standard boring to bloody interesting video, what a little know, edge can do. Thank you.
THANKS!
Thank you. This is the clearest explanation for iMovie I have seen. Very helpful!
"But you did test positive for vampire. Bye bye" xD

Simple and understatable........... and the final cut just awesome......... love from India........

In point and out point is so much more fun for me than editing it in the timeline! Yay!

Wow, great video, best and most informative I've seen. Well done!
Love your finished product. Perfect music to go along with the visuals.... thanks for sharing your knowledge... I'm such a newbie at my age but let's see....
