I have found that a battery powered drill with a grout stirring tool attached can break down silty clay in a five gallon bucket filled with about 50 percent material and 50 percent water. Mix until consistancy of a thick pancake batter then pour slowly into a properly set up river sluice to recover gold. Set a three foot long river sluice up with about 1/2 inch drop per foot of sluice length and so that only enough water passes through it such that it will move sand and small rounded gravel through it in about 8 to 15 seconds. Any faster flow may blow fine gold out. If sluice is not cleaning material out adaquately raise sluice angle up slowly until material clears adaquately. Make sure sluice in relatively level side to side. Watch water and material flow to get it fairly even and level will be good enough. Good luck - personally I hate working clays and silts but when no other choice is available I have recovered great gold using the drill and paint/grout mixer combined with a sluice.

Clay is a bugger, takes a lot of agitation, like I said before try skimming the surface of the clay with the shovel,You could use a coarse wire brush to stab and mix but skim the surface pan it then try the same spot see if the golds goes down further.Awesome gold .Wish I were there.
The old timers used to take there time! They spent a couple of hours kneeding a single pan. And if they had tons of gold bearing clay to deal with? They set up puddlers where a few men could work large amounts of clay to reduce it to concentrate. How they made them I'm not sure but they were built into the ground? And evidence of where they were can still be seen in places in Australia and I'm sure they are in the US as well
Get you some wire screen like for windows and make a 2x6 box around the screen and use a hose with pressure to resolve the clay. It is easy and you will catch more gold also. I'm 64 and done a little panning back a few years ago. Oh and as for staying in the streams, don't get you a metal detector and hit the high banks near the outside fast water and dig out about 7 inches the detect it was. There are some nuggets than can go 1\4 oz for ya. I have three right now left that I am leaving to my grandchild. She has a ring I had made for her too! The clay is gumbo yeah it stinks but the gold can't escape it to flow away. Stick with the clay for fine and detect the high walls for the nuggets! Good luck on ya.
Easiest and cheapest way to break up clay like that if your just wanting to stick to buckets and pans, is a paint mixer paddle on a cordless drill. Put in in the bucket and let it rip. It will quickly break down all the clay. Just be careful cause it can break plastic buckets very easily.
Excellent advice! I’ve used this very technique, and it works very well. There’s also a product called clay be gone, that helps break up clay very well. But the pain not mixer alone will do the job.
If I’m not mistaken thats a Hold Hog Flow pan with the sides installed.They do not make the Hog pan anymore but you should try and acquire one its even faster with less cons to pan
100 percent correct.

I’ve checked out a couple of your videos so far. They are very good. You’re a rookie (as am I) but you’ve really done your research!! I’ve ran into clay like that also. I didn’t find a fast way to work it but I did something that seemed a little easier than what you were doing. I filled my bucket with water and used my 1/8” classifier that has wire mesh instead of plastic. I took a handful of the clay and rubbed it back and forth on the wire mesh like you would use a grater. It’s still time consuming but seemed to work a little better than using only your hands. Also, I made sure the classifier had water in it too. Maybe you’ll find it a little easier. Keep the videos coming.

It Aint easy is right but when you stumble upon it and se that gold smiling back at you you cant beat it.Sometimes the clay acts as a false bedrock where as the gold sinks and sits right on top of it ,try if you can skimming the surface

Yes, I couldn't agree more. Need to slow everything down including panning out your fines. The washout of the Hog is way too forceful. You are probably losing fine/flour gold with the excessive water throwing. Just my HMO here. Great video and I wish you the best of luck!!!!

You want the Peidmont region of Georgia for placer and it's in the clay but not deep in it. Wherever you find slate in Georgia, the clay around the area for miles will have gold weathered out of deposits in and around the slate.
Outta see if you can find a hogpan I found one used but it breaks down a lit of the clay. They discontinued it because of cost but it was much better than the flow pan .
Is it in the clay or on the clay? You scrape with a flat nose shovel when its on it, otherwise you dig. Then you
roll it in balls and bake it in a fire. Grind it to dust on a piece of sheet steel, spread it out and let the wind blow the dust away and it leaves the chunks. That's how I do it

FYI..the laws that most diggers here in Georgia seem to take as a broad law about all public streambeds, is the pan and shovel only..but I have researched that topic carefully over the past decade...and even some of the clubs think the same way..but if you read that specific law, it only pertains to designated National Forest lands, unless expressly prohibited in a specific site...that has nothing to do with other streams on public lands, the exception on those is designated trout streams(this too may only be seasonal in some streams, or year-round, dont know that one)..I've regularly taken my sluice to county park sites that aren't on corps of engineers boundaries..again, I'm not saying that those folks are reading the laws wrong..but everytime someone disagrees with me on this and says they have proof of that shovel/pan law..they post it online..but when I read it, every time, is only about National Forest sites..not Georgia public streams..and some think I'm just arguing without a fact..the problem is, there is NO fact, cuz theres no law..honestly, I wont steer you wrong..but read it if you find it and pay attention to the wording, and you almost have to agree there is no broad law about it anywhere...do what you feel safe with... as for me..there is no prospecting whatsoever in lake lanier boundary streambeds and all Georgia WMA's(unless expressly allowed in individual site, and I've not seen one yet)...you can pan/shovel only in lake allatoona streams..but outside the Corps boundaries, I'll be sluicing all day on permissible private or public properties, as well as any other public stream not designated by DNR for trout..again..you dont have to agree with me, do what you feel you are safe with..and enjoy the dig!..the real treasure is in the hunt!
You could be completely right, but since I put everything I do on TH-cam and the rangers know who I am, I'm going to play nicey nice with them and try not to push my luck. I have been in touch with them.
@@goldiswhereyoufindit right, understood...I just have yet to see the law when it comes to thie public streams, where not on Corps, WMA, or Natl Forest...I've asked a former park ranger about this..and he actually said he didnt know..other than the Forest rules...I have called Forsyth and Cherokee county parks depts..and unless it pertains to Corps, wma, or designated trout waters..they have no laws on gold hunting,(except the no motorized equipment or vehicles, that IS in the ordinances)

@@freemanfornow264 ..yes I know it bites..the main reason, which I personally think is based on a bad interpretation of facts is that the digging in streambeds stirs up the toxic heavy metals and byproducts that were sluiced into waterways by the gold mining processes...causing harm to wildlife and fish native to the streams that depend on that water...thus the protections and rules for the WMA's..however..its my belief that even though the dissolving of those pollutants into the water can happen to a degree..its minimal. Because the 'heavies' like mercury, lead and others stay in the sluices..any decent prospector is aware of this and remain vigilant about NOT dumping them back in the streams..usually we takes the concentrates and heavies home to clean up there..at least thats what I and others I dig with agree on..sure there are some bad apples out there but still think that impact is miminal..I could be wrong but that's the way I see things
I found a huge deposit of blue clay revealed after a creek bank washed away in North GA, Toccoa area. Had no idea you could find gold in it. This was 10 yrs ago. Had a rare flood in the area, a bend in the river that was mostly sand got washed away leaving a chunk of clay in the bank the size of a puck up truck.
the gold itself doesn't really contain clay. The gold just sticks to the surface of the clay and can't go further. It's a false bottom and acts like bedrock.
@@goldiswhereyoufindit if memory serves about 100 feet past the clay deposit the creek turns into bed rock with lots of crevasses. But that part is on the wildlife refuge. Any gold stuck in the clay probably got caught there. The last time I visited the area the clay was all washed away. Allways wanted to try gold panning. May have to look more into it.
do it! Just remember, the gold looks way bigger on camera and requires way more work than what you see on TH-cam. It's fun and a great way to enjoy nature and get exercise while stimulating the mind.@@dude8223

Awesome video here. And if I am not mistaken that clay you was working is decomposing bedrock and decomposing debris. That is why it stinks. I have worked that type of clay in the past grading around homes. And it actually takes about a week or two before it completely dries out. But that is nice gold there, Bud.
I think you might be right. The stream channel used to run below where I was digging, and in the new stream channel the bedrock is as soft as clay.
@@goldiswhereyoufindit I have seen that type of decomposing cray in East Tennessee around about every lake, rivers and streams that I have been to over the recent years. A few of my favorite places to go and explore with my son is in the citico creek area and the ball river falls area within the Great Smoky mountains national park. It is awesome seeing actually gold flakes float over the bedrock and spin around in the open pockets of the bedrock in creek. And, I wish I had a waterproof camera to video it but I didn't. However it is illegal to prospect or mining in these areas. But I have seen one area where someone was digging at and a few weeks prior to me and my son visiting the creek. And I think that person or persons actually got caught prospecting that area. Which, there are several campsites around the creek that I have seen a lot of families during the spring and summer times.
However, the scenery in these areas are beautiful in the spring and summer times.
Try not to wash the material from the back when panning. Most important thing about panning I learned if you wash from the back you will lose gold. I set myself up a 1 gram setup of flour gold and mixed it in with some black sand then practiced in a tub to see if I could get all of it back out by panning. Also take a look at Gold Hogs panning video it will get you out of the habit of swirling when you are down to the last bit in a pan. Swirling will make you miss gold you have in your pan
Have you ever done any in East central Georgia in the red clay? The first good gold discovery and mine in georgia and I think the United States was in the county I live in near Augusta?
If you look at the map called "gold deposits of Georgia" from 1909 it has all the significant gold areas shaded. I'm always open to trying new areas.
@@goldiswhereyoufindit yeah I have been really studying trying to figure out of there's much left.....I know where a few old rock piles are near old sites and at least one old tailing pile.....I am just curious about the red clay..... I've got to buy another pan first because mine apparently grew legs
@@freemanfornow264 gold will stick to any color of clay. If it's a gold bearing area there is always a chance.
Try a small dredge if you can..or at least a rocker box...much faster

Gold is not in all clay. It's only in areas known for gold. In this particular video I'm in Dawsonville, GA

Blankets Creek mountain bike trails at Lake Allatoona or Yahoola Creek Park in Dahlonega both allow panning. Pan and shovel only though no sluices unless you're on private property. But, you'll find gold at both of those places for sure.

Private property. On public property in Georgia you can only use a pan and hand shovel and only in the stream bed.
Always know the law, especially when you post it on TH-cam lol.
@@goldiswhereyoufindit oh yes, so here is a question....... does hand shovel and pan mean just that or can you use a classifier too.......... and how big of a small shovel can you use before it's too big? Is a snuffer bottle technically not allow since it is pan and hand shovel only? What about a five gallon bucket. If you can't use one to help process material, can you bring one to carry your stuff and sit on as a stool? I think those questions are kinda vague in the laws
@@kurtdiegel7430 That's why before I go prospecting in the Chattahoochee National Forest I'll be visiting the ranger station, telling them what my plans are and what equipment I'd like to use and get them to tell me if what I'm doing is ok before I do it.
Also, I want to know if my Gold Hog Con Box is classified as a pan, and if I can bring more than one pan. I also want to do some sniping and I don't know if that's allowed. I think I also need to determine if the stream is classified as a trout stream.

A ultrasonic cleaner would make short work of that clay. turn it into mayo in seconds.

@@goldiswhereyoufindit it will work, the problem is portability. The gold will drop to the bottom and jiggle all over. I use one to separate gold from electronics. 6 quart . 140 bucks. Paid for itself the first time I used it. Even has a drain valve. runs on 110. You could keep water going in, open the valve into a bucket so if the gold jiggles around and enter the drain it just sinks to the bottom of the bucket
Too much black sand still in your pan when you try fanning. Try panning it down just a bit further, treat it like we a baby once you get down to that last tablespoon or two. Slow and easy.

You scrape the material off the top of the clay that's how you do that because the gold won't settle down into it

If you can't find gold on weekend gold miner's lease you don't know what your looking for. Especially if you're digging in the common pile. And from watching you pan you need to practice more and watch some videos on how too

@@goldiswhereyoufindit I made the same mistake when I started back in the 60's when you pan find a rock you can sit on by the stream and take your time you will get better results also look for culverts with riffles clean them out about 4 feet down to the bottom good luck.
