      @@MikeTheFitFarmer I vote more duck vids for sure. I haven't seen very many that go into the financial ROI breakdown (costs vs. profits). That would be of most interest. Unless those ducks are paying for themselves via eggs or meat, they're just another pet.

    Got baby chicks today and they had baby duck, oh so cute and I was tempted, but I don't have a pond! Many years ago I had ducks and a goose and I'll tell you those geese make great guard dos! My chickens have always come running when I go outside and call them! We are lucky here in our small town to be allowed chickens! Have a blessed day!

    Just came across your videos. We have had ducks for quite a while now... We have free ranged them during the day since they were fairly young and every evening (sometimes even before we get out there) they are waiting at their run ..ready to eat and waiting on us. We also use the quack method to get their attention. At any point if we come outside and want to find them we can quack and they will perk up and come running over. Always ready for food or treats should we happen to have some. 😉 Love your pond! We plan on digging a small one on our property at some point.. jist debating how big and deep we'd need it so that we don't have to constantly drudge out the bottom.

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you have great ducks! We have found that ducks are super fun to watch, even more so than chickens! When our ducks are free ranging they follow Selah around when she feeds the dogs because they LOVE dog food and of course she gives them a few pieces. That is awesome that you are working on building a pond. Our ducks love the pond. Thank you so much for watching! More duck videos are coming so stay tuned!

  • @GraceHomesteadFarm
    @GraceHomesteadFarm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    YES! When my ducks are small I peep.peep.peep when I feed/water them. When they are older I also peep at them when I feed. So anywhere I am on the farm if I don't see the ducks or hear them or I find bugs or want them to come into the coop I will peep.peep.peep and they will answer and come running.
    I also use the same bucket to feed so when they see me with that bucket they go right into their coop. Happy Homesteading! ~Shaina~

    The pond is definitely a game changer!! I don’t know yet that one of the free range issues with chickens applies to ducks however, they may lay an egg you’ll miss....maybe not. I like the quack as well....they respond and that’s what matters!!😉 great video!!

    love your vids, and am just about to order my khaki campbell ducklings. I have some questions, hope you can help (it helps that you have a pond!); how large is your pond? how many ducks do you have? do the ducks eat the duckweed (green stuff floating on the pond)? do the ducks hurt the pond by adding too much nitrogen, or digging into the sides? do you limit their time in the pond? I would like to free range for the most part, will get the electric fencing for the rest of the time. i'm in S/W Florida. really looking forward to your reply...thank you in advance!

    Thanks for the videos! We are considering getting ducks and free ranging them only. We have three one acre ponds, so they will be happy. I'm worried about predators though. Do you think a livestock guardian dog would help protect the ducks? Maybe a Great Pyrenees?

    • @kricketjoy
      @kricketjoy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, if we let them on the lakes will they get suck from the water, or spread sickness to my family through the eggs? Should I treat the pond water with something to keep them healthy?

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We would still want to put them up at night but a livestock guardian dog would help with predator pressure as long as it was bonded to your flock of ducks. As for your ducks getting sick, they have a higher body temperature than other animals and do not get sick very often. You would not need to treat your pond. Thanks so much for watching our channel and asking questions!

    Do you clip your ducks' wings? Or do you just make them so comfortable (feed, shelter, etc.) that they don't want to fly away?

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Craig, we raise Khaki Campbell ducks. I do clip their wings. even though Khaki Campbells are not really able to fly, I have witnessed them getting a running start and gliding over our electrified fencing. So, I do suggest you clip their wings, unless you are letting them permanently free range. If they are permanently free ranging, and not going up in a pin, than please don't clip their wings so they may be able to flee from a predator if needed.

    Just asking, how do you make sure they don't run away? Or do ducks and chickens even do that stuff? Also thanks for the tips!!!

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. We keep them in fencing at night and let them out during the day. When we let them out we close the fence so they don't have free access to their food so by the end of the day they are wanting to have more food and go back in the fence at night. They never wander off very far and we have never had an issue with them leaving.

      Yes we feed the duck and the chickens the same feed, it is a layer mix. We buy all of our feed from a local farm that mills all of his own grains.

      I gotta find a local feed store where I can figure out what to get as well as scratch. :) I got my first Khaki Campbell 4 month ago. It is a drake and more beautiful than my others. Only have 3 ducks for now lol.

      You have to start somewhere Dotty! We actually started with 3 ducks. One of my (Lacie) friends was moving and need to rehome them so we said bring them on over and Mike loved raising them so here we are 4 years later with 50+ ducks. lol

    Hi, is it recommended that I make my ducks come back to their “home” (cage) at night even though they dont usually go very far from it at all? They always stay with 6-8 feet from the cage... Should i be worried that one day theyd never come back?

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We feed then in the evening, so when we let the ducks out we close the fence and keep them away from their feed. Usually by the end of the day they are hungry so that makes it easier to get them back in the fence.

    How do you get ducks to lay eggs in the same place every day?

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well we have nesting boxes for them but half the time they lay wherever they are sitting. We find eggs all over our duck enclosure. We have even found them right on the edge of the pond or even in the edge of the pond. Sorry we can't be more help!

      Ducks tend to lay eggs in the early morning, so if you let them out at 9-10 am they should be done.

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We raise our ducks for eggs so we haven't butchered any ducks yet. I do know that some ducks grow faster than others so it will depend on what breed of duck you are raising. Pekin ducks are usually what people raise for meat ducks because they grow fast and they are a bigger bird. I hope that helps!

    I have a good question how many ducks would I get if I want to all meet ducks instead of chickens

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would really depend on the type of duck. A breed that is considered a meat duck are Pekins. We haven't raised ducks for meat birds so I'm not the best one to tell you how many you will need but if I were you I would start researching Pekin ducks.

    Do you clip there wings so the don't fly or how do you deal with that?

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Domestic ducks don't fly but they can glide. The only time we clip their wings is when one keeps getting out of the fence.

    How do you protect them from owls and other raptors?

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When we put them back in their fencing at night we do have a structure for them to get under to protect them from aerial predators. Right now we also keep them in a wooded area so they are more protected.

    But me ducklings r scared of me so how do I 'quack' them in??

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They need to be able to associate you with food and with your quack or whatever sound you want to use. We let the ducks out around 11:30 or 12:00 and when we do that we don't give them access to feed for the rest of the day. By the end of the day they are hungry so we open the fence and pour their feed in their container and while I am doing this I quack. This helps them identify me and my quack with food and they start coming in the fence.
