  • One of my favorite flowering shrubs is the Sonic Bloom Pink Weigela. Weigela come in many different colors & textures. They're one of the most beautiful flowering shrubs, yet most people have not heard of them. So, I decided to make this video to share with you my stunning and favorite Pink Sonic Bloom Weigelia. Maybe you'll choose a Weigelia for your yard too?!

    Your Weigela plant is so beautiful. I didn't know about this plant until last month when I was watching a youtube vlog and they showed the plant and the name of it so I went on amazon and ordered two. They are doing great just two to three weeks old. I was backing out my yard and I could not believe they were blooming this soon. I planted them right before a big rain. I pray they continue to do good because I don't have a green thumb lol.

    I just bought 2 of these for our front flower bed, fingers crossed they do well there! We are in Alabama, so we have pretty hot summers, too. Yours looks gorgeous!

      SheriNewton, How are your plants doing so far this summer? Mine are doing well but they are in my East facing garden. They do look like they burn a little by the end of the summer. Im hoping as my nearby tree grows it will shade it a little more to help reduce the intense sunshine. You can post pics in our facebook group, FAVORITE HOBBY GARDENERS, if you'd like to.

      Hi there!! I was born & raised in west MI!! It’s nice to meet another Michigander. I’m finding these really do need enough sun to bloom well but not too much hot hot sun or the leaves will scorch. I’m currently in zone 6a Oklahoma & our full sun would kill the plants. My pink faces morning sun & does well until August. Then it burns. My north facing never burns but does not bloom as well.

    I have a Sonic Bloom pink weigela in my North Texas zone 8a garden in a south facing full sun location. It did take a beating from the harsh summer temps and sun, but it's doing great. It does get shielded from the late afternoon sun from the west, though. Not much likes the west side of my house either.

    • @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA
      @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your question. I learned this the hard way. I have two plants. I cut one back too short. It did not produce as many flowers in the spring because this plant buds on old wood. That means, whatever size & shape you cut it into, that is the size it will be when it blooms in the spring. I suggest that after all the leaves fall off in the winter (Feb-March) you cut the plant into the shape that you want it to be in the spring when it blooms. For ex: If you want your plant to be 4' tall & 4' wide. That is the size to cut it into prior to the spring. After its first big flush of blooms, it will begin to grow again & continue to grow all summer. I snip the long, wonky branches of mine during the summer to keep it shaped the way I want it throughout the summer.

      Hi there, Stop in at your local nurseries & ask them to order it for you. Most specialty nurseries place custom orders for landscapers & will let you k ow if they can order one for you. Also, you can order online. Check out the Proven Winners website.

    Hi Andrea. Just curious if you fertilize your weigela? I planted two Tuxedo Weigela by bloomin easy & they never performed the way when I first purchased them. It looks straggly. I do prune them either late winter or early Spring before they start setting buds. Not sure what else I can do to make it look fuller. Otherwise I do love my shrub because it has darker leaves with cream flowers which is striking.

    • @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA
      @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sammy, your plant sounds beautiful! I don’t fertilize mine. But I do prune like you do. 🤷‍♀️ I pruned one of mine down too much last year. So much that it never bloomed. I’m hoping it will be back to its self this year. Lesson learned.

    Gorgeous weilgia 😍They are actually quite common in my area on Vancouver Island. I have thought about planting one but I think they need more moisture then I can give them. I need drought tolerant plants and weilgia likes some moisture.

      Hi There! It’s good to hear from you. That must be why mine does so well… the clay soil in my East facing bed stays wet for a long time after it rains.

    When we bought this house 14 years ago, there was already a very mature Sonic Bloom on our front lawn. It grows at least 12' tall and about the same width wise. But since it interferes with us getting in and out of the house at times, I cut the width back all around so it's more like 8' wide. It's gorgeous. And this year the honey bees are out in full force up here in Southern Ontario, Canada. I haven't seen them near this bush in about five years. I'm happy to have them back!

    I have 2 Red Prince that are in full bloom April 1st here in NE Texas. They are planted on the NW side of my house, doing well there. They do require a lot of supplemental watering in our hot hot summers. I prune mine by 40% right after the blooms drop in mid April to keep them at a manageable height, they do not rebloom much. They grow about 24" every year.

    I just found out about this shrub and I found one at my Aldi! I got it and now I am researching the best place to plant it as we are in hot and humid Louisiana. They are so beautiful and reming me of Bougainvillea a little. Mine just says pink so I may not have a sonic bloom but it will be pretty.

    Hello Andrea. I just watched your video about Weigela. I have had two Wine and Roses Weigela for over 7 years. My problem is they have never bloomed. The most I've seen is 2 or 3 small buds which never developed. I'm in zone 7. The Weigela start getting sun at about 9:30 am and are in full sun for at least 5 hours. They're in a bed with liriope which are thriving. The Weigela have spread a little since planting but never really gained much in height. The bushes have always looked really healthy except they don't grow much and aren't blooming. Any thoughts as to why?

    • @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA
      @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jean, Gosh, how disappointing that would be. Im sad with you. I suggest you ask your local garden store because my first thought would be that they aren't getting enough sun. But, Zone 7 summers are so hot & this one here I planted on the East facing side & does great until late summer when it scotches from the hot sun. My second one is planted on the north side. It doesn't bloom as much because of less sun. But it doesn't scorch in the late summer like my East facing one does. Maybe yours is shaded from surrounding plants? I hope you find the answer.

    Hi,
    Luckily, I have this beautiful shrub at my new house. What a lovely surprise when spring came and it bloomed spectacularly!
    It has finished blooming and I am not sure what to do to care for it.
    Could you please provide more info on how to best prune it?
    Thank you.

    • @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA
      @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wonderful tangorchid!! After it's finished blooming the first time in the spring. I trim up the branches & shape the plant a little. It will keep growing and bloom a little throughout the summer. The leaves will drop off end of the fall. At that time, trim the branches to the shape & length you want. Don't take off too much or you won't have as many pretty flowers in the spring. The ugly wooden branches will begin to grow little buds through the winter. You won't notice them that much. Then as it warms up in late winter/early spring you will notice the green leaves begin to grow and you'll have a plant full of pink flowers!! I have one a friend gave me 25 years ago and it is probably the full 5X5 you mentioned. I never thought to put one in a planter bed near the house but it’s so pretty there! Initially you said you could maintain it smaller, but then said don’t prune it back too much. How could I keep it smaller?

    • @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA
      @favoritehobbygardenerOKLAHOMA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      christinearbogast, Great questions! Mine is growing very well where it is and I can see now that to keep it smaller than 5x5 will be a little bit of a challenge. I think the plant will look best at 4x4 or larger. If you want a smaller one, Id recumbent buying a smaller variety. Spilled wine & roses is a very pretty plant & I believe it stays smaller. There are so many to choose from now. You're invited to post pictures in our Facebook group: FAVORITE HOBBY GARDENERS
