What you experienced was a Derecho which is a massive line of severe thunderstorms with intense straight line winds and possible tornadoes. They are not that common in Houston.
That doesn't happen in the case of hail, frontline winds, or rain severe enough to prevent you from seeing a flooded road ahead. It IS true in the case of big tornadoes. The Houston area tends to have EF0-2 tornadoes, not those Oklahoma honkers. (Our construction standards aren't what they could be.)
Here in Houston we never put our emergency lights on in a storm until all of the out of towners moved in! Just keep your distance on the freeway from other drivers!! Flashing lights don’t help anyways, people wreck into emergency vehicles!
You cannot hear a good portion of the rain, I'm guessing because of the phone calls. This happened more than once in the video. It could have been great if it weren't for the constant interruptions
Let me just add that you do not want a dashcam date/time to be wrong. If you have to pull up a video for police, you don’t want to be standing there scratching your (figurative) nuts for 20 minutes.
My son awakened me from a nap and told me there was a tornado warning, I told him he was overreacting and got mad at him for waking me up. 15 minutes later all hell broke lose.
I was downtown when the warning went to all phones. By the time I got to W. Gray near Kroger my car felt like it was about to be picked up. The palm trees looked exactly like being in a hurricane. The stop sign in front of me was oscillating back and forth at a 45° angle. I have never experienced anything like it. I am 60. I was listening to local news coverage and this was not predicted. They didn’t realize how bad it was until after it was over. Two weeks later many streets are closed downtown due to broken glass in high rise buildings, some quite tall. I believe the flexing of the buildings caused the glass to become dislodged more so than the wind actually blowing the glass out. Obviously every window downtown will have to be inspected.
I put hazards on whenever conditions (weather or traffic) cause me to slow to 40 mph, or less, on the freeway. I'm trying to reduce the chances of some fool rear-ending me.
I used live in the Northwest side (CyFair) and one day was coming up Eldrige and came very very close toa a tornado came down on Sams club roof. very minor damage but they do happen.
Maybe this is just me, but I think you started out in the best possible place you could be during a storm like that, especially with possible tornadoes, which is in an urban downtown area. If it were me, I more than likely would have gone in to one of those underground parking garages under one of those highrises and just waited it out there. I would think that would be far better than being stuck on a freeway trapped in traffic and totally exposed to the elements.
@@tnut3305at that point they were in the safest possible place they could under the circumstances. They had nowhere else to go. You do not want to be outside in that kind of weather.

they are not that common anywhere
It was an EF-1 tornado. It touched down in Cypress then crossed Jersey Village towards downtown Houston.
Yea derechos are scary and leaves trail of destruction
@@DanRustleThey are in the midwest
@@rrrghyourehot The heavy winds/rain/hail was actually a derecho (or straight line wind storm). The tornado in Cypress was a different situation.

That is a tornado death trap because other drivers stopping under the passage with you stuck in it can always cause problems

@@jamminman2867 Not a tornado
It looks like the traffic in general stopped because of the conditions.
They stopped because police cut off direction in both ways of the highway
why do people stop under overpasses when there might be a tornado? it will literally kill you

Try Rainx windshield fluid it works extremely well for visibility for these types of conditions...

It was a derecho. And we never get them here. It spawned two F1 tornadoes.

Why are people stopping under the overpass! There was no hail with this storm and if there was a tornado that was not going to save them
Well what did you expect them to do…go through the mass of traffic in front of them?
