- Raw first person experience with the Houston derecho that struck just after 6 PM CDT on 05/16/2024. This is in NW Houston near Cypress and Katy. My fear was the tornado warning. Excuse my wimpy dog.
I was in Katy, alone with my dog and kid hunkered down in my bathroom. It was weird the west and north side of my home was scary AF, on the east side you would never of known any of that craziness was going on. I've lived in Katy/Houston for 43 years, this felt more like a hurricane, but like you, I was more fearful of a tornado.
We had a Dericho here in Ontario last year. Came all the way from Ohio. Worked it's way up Georgian bay and kicked up insane seas. 30 foot waves. It destroyed the town lighthouse and breakwall.

I was stuck in my truck on I-10 as it came through. I don't think I will ever forget this.
Glad you are safe. It was horrific. 5 days without electricity. The sound I will never forget. 😢🙏

das habe ich auch gedacht. manche häuser sind ja wenigstens gut gebaut aus stein , leider zu 70% ohne keller, was das ganze stabiler machen würde. ich in deutschland, schau mir das an , denn wir haben hier ganz viele Orkane und keine Tornados. der tornado löst sich auf,wenn die bedingung nicht mehr da ist. die orkane leider nicht , die machen alles platt über hunderte kilometer ,egal ob berg oder flach und hinterlassen auch eine schneise der verwüstung !! in amerika kennt sie fast keiner , leider !! lg
I live in Houston, in Oak Forest where we had heavy damage. I was here in May 1983 when we had tornado storms that twisted tree tops off and through them. I rode out several big hurricanes where trees snapped in half. This storm laid down really big healthy pine trees, root ball and all. Something I have never seen in my 73 years in Houston. One came down in the yard next to me and the storm was so loud I did not know it until I stepped out the front door and saw it blocking the street. Ironically all the dead trees from last years drought are still standing.
Yes, the May 20th 1983 storm that came through around 1:30 am was the closest storm to this one. That one had straight line winds and spawned several tornado's, but the straight line winds were stronger with this storm. The winds in this video were around 100 mph.
I was in Cypress and I have never heard a sound like that before in my life. 😮Your video captures some of the intensity in the sound. We are lucky it was EF-1 and survived it. RIP to the ones who lost their lives.
I was there..in the Infamous Labor Day Storm 1998 Central New York ( Syracuse) straight line winds ain't no joke ( it's been reposted about 8 months ago again on TH-cam) I was driving close to 80 mph trying to outrun the storm on highway 690 east I could see it coming in my rear view mirror it caught me like I was standing still I whipped off the the John glen exit and turned under the over pass and everything turned Grey for about 20 to 30 minutes..I was about 6 - 7 miles from the NYS FAIRGROUNDS..when the storm cleared I drove out and turned around and went back up the on ramp to 690 east and when I tell you it was everything on that highway I mean EVERYTHING ! There was trees bushes MAILBOXES ( the big blue metal kind that bolts into the cement) Flag poles..all kinds of debris that I had to drive over under or around ..by the time I got to the fairgrounds 2 or 3 people were killed in their trailers..by the time I got to the Syracuse exit there was a tree laying across the exit ramp, I got out of my car and dragged it over to the side, at the bottom of the ramp was a huge deep pool of water 🌊💦 guys I will never ever forget that day...
I was in the Syracuse Derecho too and now to be in the Harris County Derecho and Cypress Tornado -- not fun, not fun at all. In Syracuse I lived on the 3rd floor on a hill. Thank God, the Lord woke me up after showing me a crazy dream of a medusa like woman in the storm. The Lord told me to close my windows. I jumped up and ran through my apartment closing windows. My neighbors didn't close theirs and just about every window was blown out. Trees were down everywhere. Grad Housing at Syracuse University, where I was attending lost roofs. It was madness. Well here I am again. All of our fences are down, trees down everywhere, neighbors got holes in their homes, I have some roof damage. SMH --- Get your life in order, this ain't no joke! #BePrepared. I'm grateful no lives was lost in my home or neighborhood. But I pray for those who lost loved ones.
That’s an awful sound from inside a house! We went through scary storms here in OKC last night. The wind was loud and so much lightning. We had sirens and alarms going off, too. Glad you are okay.
No warning sirens here. Kids were playing outside, people were walking, ice cream lady driving around, lots caught off guard.
Out at banner area it was just west of me. I got it on video and didn't realize there was a tornado out there. Lost power and I think that's when they warned everyone. What a trip. Stay safe , put rocks in your shoes
People need to be "weather aware" Weather app.and Radar on phone and a NOAA weather radio. You can see them storms rolling in from a distance before they get to your area. Mesoscale convective systems associated with straight line winds of a derecho are lines of servere thunderstorms still capable of brief spin up damaging tornadoes
Very grateful I live next to big Lake Superior and we very rarely get bad storms because of the cool air off the lake. Last one even close to this was in 2016. This one was crazier!
This is almost like a horror movie where the monster is the weather. The lightning, the noise, the house shaking.
There is also a mysterious voice when I'm looking at the cameras just before I move away, making it even more like a horror movie. Still don't know what that is! All I can make out is "no candy".

Could be the wind or the house shaking but it does sound like a whisper saying "no candy." What's even scarier than hunkering down in a hurricane is hunkering down with a ghost 😮
I lived in Houston for a while and saw some feisty storms. But except for Hurricane Ike I never saw anything like this!

Storm PTSD is no joke took a direct hit from an ef2 in Mississippi in 2020 don’t think I’ll never look at storms the same again
I definitely have storm PTSD from last week. I really thought it was over.
Even if you don’t take a direct hit, storms can be really scary, especially at night.
Last year the sirens that went off around 12:59 am last year where I live in Ohio.
I was more scared of tornado sirens in this case compared to any point before then because I was caught off guard by the midnight alarm, because usually the warnings came around evening, not midnight.

I saw the huge coal black sky in the background when I went outside to get my mail. Got a warning on my phone at that time that a thunderstorm was headed my way. I thought to myself "wow! it's awfully dark back there. The sky is far too dark to be a thunderstorm. It's going to be some God awful bad one". No more than a few minutes after getting back inside the house. Got another warning saying to seek shelter now, a tornado was in the area. Then just right then the crazy hard wind hit. And with it a few seconds later came the hail. It sounded like all hell was breaking loose outside. The electric went out too then. I listened for the freight train sound tornadoes make. Didn't hear anything except the crazy wind and rain outside hitting the house real hard. One of my dogs ran and stood very close to my legs. Poor girl was very scared. I pulled a curtain back and looked outside, couldn't see anything but grayish white sky and lots of rain and wind. It looked like the rain wasn't making it all the way to the ground. But it looked wicked outside. Resembled a fishbowl when you stir the water with a spoon. Then in a quick second the sky turned green, I knew what that meant. But quickly it turned whitish gray again. I went to the bedroom where my other dog was and sat on the bed with both of them, listening to the racket going on outside. I was petting and calming the one that was scared and thinking to get us all 3 into my closet. The only place in my house that had no windows. As I stood the rain stopped and the wind wasn't blowing crazy anymore. I stood and listened for that tornadoe sound. It was actually calming down outside. So I looked out of the window and saw that everything returned to normal. Tree branches were everywhere and occasionally for about 20 minutes there would be a wind gust that blew through. It felt very cool outside too. It was the craziest thunderstorm I've witnessed in my whole life. And all of this wicked craziness lasted 4 minutes. I hope nothing like that comes through Houston ever again as long as I live. I was safe in my house and actually was wondering how on earth is it holding up so good in that wicked crazy wind going on outside.
This was very scary for me even after a week driving in my neighborhood and still seeing what it did gives me so much anxiety, even watching your video my heart ❤️ goes very fast, I took my daughter and went to the hallway bathroom and pray sooo hard
That sounds terrifying!! I’ve never seen any videos capturing what it sounds like from inside, it’s always security footage or dashcam. Hope you’re all good now!
This was my first derecho storm. Didn't know what it was. I manage a gas station in Houston and the cleanup was a nightmare.

Me too. This was worst than the May 20th 1983 Bow Echo that caused several tornados in the Houston area as far as straight line winds go. That storm a tornado came within a 1/4 of a mile of our house. We were close enough to hear it. Winds were around 70 to 80 mph, this was 100 mph or a little more!
I was in acres homes. I had just gotten off the bus from a job interview when It rolled in, I watch a lot of weather documentaries and stuff. I turned on the news and saw thunderstorm warning, didn't think anything of it, 5 minutes later tornado warning, I look out my window and it's its gone from daylight to night. I realized it was a derecho when I saw the way the clouds were moving and how the wind was whipping the trees. We had power in our house and our neighbors too but everywhere else in the neighborhood was dark for up to 7 days. I rode my bike downtown the next day and saw the damage it did to skyscrapers. The thing that struck me was how little warning there was. I if I should be paid attention to the forecast was but that's the closest thing to category 3 hurricane I've ever experienced@@billybassman21
There are 2 kinds of Texans in these situations- The people run to their safe spot before the time you started recording and the people that are outside/at the window when they damn well know better. I'm not judging, I do the same.

It's a big shocker for us out-of-towners who moved to the Houston area of how weather here can be so unpredictably destructive.
As a Houstonian all my life this storm was not normal .. we flood and stuff but we don’t get stuff like this .. never seen this in my life here in Houston
@lelelum4103 I live a little west of Katy. Several years back, we had a microburst. My husband and I were in my car at the gas station. We saw a tornadobform right in front of us. It was moving my car. The weather people said no tornadoes but I saw it. We had telephone polls cut in half as far as the eye could see. Peoples houses were cut completely off at about 4 ft up. It picked up cars and slammed them down again with people inside of them. Pelted a teacher friend trying to get back in the school. She was unable to open the door because of the winds. She was pelted with hail so bad that she had bruises and cuts. We had people with broken arms and legs that had to go to ER. People videoed it. I would swear it was a tornado but apparently microburst which was just like this storm can spawn tornadoes. I was praying like crazy while in my car. The car in the stall next to us pulled out fearing a collapse. It got so dark and the tornado formed I couldn't see their truck which was next to us. When that happened they pulled right back in. We rode it out. Then it moved on and the sun came out like nothing happened. Put the car in D and sped off as it was headed right for the high school where our daughter was for awards night. Very scary. Right in the middle of it, I'm trying to call my kids and warn them. Mama bear mode. Cars sliding sideways in the tornado and I'm trying to call kids.
We were in Hurricane Nicholas my first month there (Baytown).

I have lived here my whole life, never experienced anything like this. Most storms are a disappointment even though they will be issuing warning. Other than 2 hurricanes you got to go back to May 20th 1983 to come close to this.
If this is a Derecho, I've apparently been in more than one, since moving to Las Vegas 20 years ago. Our monsoon storm are frequently like this. In fact our building codes are for winds and earthquakes both.
It's unnerving, because the home is swaying noticeably.
I get you as I moved here from Vegas 5 years ago.. And those monsoons are for real! But I have to say not like anything I've seen here... I'm not trying to one up or hate at all because I felt the same way. NOTHING scared me before really and for about 20 minutes I was scared like to the bone. Never seen anything get so bad so fast.... I didn't know till I knew, I mean we think we know but nope at 52 years old I learned a new lesson lol!
Y'all I'm in Cypress where the tornado hit and I have severe anxiety and Ptsd from this storm... Like I've completely lost my appetite and haven't really eaten much since then. I can barely even watch this video.

@@dahitteman2132 Oh shut up, you don’t know how scary it was for all of Houston, we’ve almost never experienced storms this bad & we didn’t even know what a derecho was until now and then we were hit again with hurricane beryl , the winds were up to 65-80mph during the derecho storm, you don’t know how scary that was until you’ve experienced it yourself.

That storm was insane! We are getting hammered this year and now a hurricane is coming and it’s early July!
Back when I lived in Phoenix we had a storm similar to this. Steel beams holding up billboards were bent to the point the tops of the billboards were touching the ground. Big industrial strength power poles (80+ foot tall) were thrown across the street, leaving an 8 foot deep hole in their place.
I was watching the Astros-A's game from the Bay Area and they showed the rain coming into the stadium

Literally had my heart pounding. I knew I wasn't going to die, but feared my house was going to get severally damaged. Fortunately it was fine, but I did have some leaks around a couple of vents on the roof during the hurricane and it was likely from this storm.

The dog running while trying to get in the bathroom is so real 😭😭 if I’m ever in a tornado I’m actually screwed because my dogs weigh like 60-65 lbs and they won’t go in a room without treats or if they know you need them to go in there because of something they’ll back up so I’d have to pick them up and carry them in the bathroom 😭😭😭

I have experience with storms, I was at the window before it got bad and as it started to move away.
I live just outside of Pasadena, and that was some scary stuff. I've been in some storms before, but nothing this bad.

Since they identify this as a "land hurricane," I wouldn't be surprised to hear about tornadoes showing up in the midst of this. Terrifying in any case.
I believe there was one tornado in Cypress. As a whole, the storm was classified as a derecho.
I have a security video I got from a business of what looks to be a tornado north of 290. It was never confirmed, but it might explain some major damage to a hospital off FM 1960.

I live near the airport at Barker Cypress and Mroton/Groeshke and I got the emergency warning for a tornado and literally within a minute or two this happened as well. I did grab my dog and we did sit in the bathtub. His anxiety was getting severe that he was panting heavily even while I was trying to console him to calm him down. I thought there was a tornado right next to me.
How is that the worst??
Even when Ike came through in 2008 I never got winds at 100 mph like this storm. Of course that lasted much longer, as far as thunderstorms this was the worst.
I watched the last few minutes of the video numerous times, fascinated by the brightness of the lightning. Each time your weather radio sounded the alarm, I kept initially thinking that it was ours. BTW, is that a Betamax VTR in your profile pic?
I uploaded this video in HDR so the light should look pretty realistic on a phone or monitor that supports it. The weather radio alerts at full volume for tornado warnings. VHS from 1979, retailed for $1000 brand new, got it at Goodwill for like $5. Worked great after a cleaning.

Needville TX got slammed with a bad hail storm and then y'all got slammed with tornadoes and strong wind. This weather is just nuts

My friend was in her car coming home in this. She said traffic came to a stop. She was sandwiched between two vans and they were both rocking. She said she nade her peace with God because she thought she was going to die.

Yes there was a hook on the radar coming toward me which was my main concern. I had no idea I would experience 100 mph straight line downburst winds.
I've been in a tornado but never a derecho. Seems very similar....

Why is it that during the heavy rain part of a thunderstorm, its sometimes impossible to see lightning or hear the thunder. I can understand the thunder, since its sometimes very noisy due to rain and wind but lightning should easily be seen through even heavy falling water droplets. As it stands now, just before it rains and when it starts tapering off is when I hear the most thunder and see the lightning most of the time, but not all of the time. I do see lightning with this storm (bear in mind, this happened at dusk when it's darker and my theory does not count at nighttime). I am a nearby resident by the way just down the coast. Serious question. This is NOT with all storms by the way.
Lightning tends to be the worst just before and as the storm is ending. Lightning doesn’t like rain. When the thunder starts getting louder at the end that was an indication the worst was over which is why I went back to the window.
Okay… go to Home Depot and buy a Saferoom , they have small to large size, it’s worth every penny 👍🏻
We moved from Tyler, Texas up to far NE Oklahoma next to a large lake, the first thing we did was get in line for a safe room , Joplin Mo, had been blown away 6 months earlier so we had to wait 3 months , but we love feeling safer now.

@@BCHonea nothing normal about this storm. These were winds around 100 mph. 106 mph gust not far from me on a personal weather station. Lived in Houston my whole life. May 1983 was the closest, but that was mainly tornado damage.

No I was on an ups for the camera and emergency lighting. Hooked the generator up shortly after this and was on it for 3 days.
That had to have done some damage

This was like a hurricane. If you mean my comment about being the worst thunderstorm this was the worst. As far as Ike or Alicia this of course was in and out quickly, but the winds were stronger with this than what I experienced with those hurricanes.
Yes we get hurricanes but hurricanes give us time to evacuate or prepare this gave no time for either

We know hurricanes are coming and sometimes are lessened by the time they get this far in, not always though. This storm whipped in so fast. It was clear, looked down at social media a few minutes. Looked back up..black outside. I catapulted into action as I thought a tornado for sure. Got my cars and dogs in garage, battened down the hatches and got by the bathroom under stairs.

Hard to say because it's a different kind of storm. This was in and out quickly. Ike was over several hours. 2 hours was pretty bad and scary, but the winds never got this strong. 80 MPH wind gust with Ike over here VS 100 and maybe even 110 MPH with this. We had way more trees down and fences damaged with this storm in my neighborhood and in such a short time. Not much roof damage though other than where the tornados touched down. My guess is several hours of constant winds probably damages the roof shingles more.

An English comment here. Our weather is intensifying too, though not as badly; 12 named storms during the winter.
Then why are some of your school boards removing climate change from the curriculum?
This is grossly irresponsible, for the whole world. The problems can be dealt with; in the US you have many brilliant engineers, who could reduce gas usage in cars; and your city will find having a good public transport system cheaper for the city, while much reducing emissions. But ignoring the problem won't make it go away, although it might make a short-term fast buck for your big business.
Houston is 60 miles wide and houses many oil and gas companies...never happen.
It's hard to pin point if this or any storm is a direct result of climate change. I don't think they want it completely removed, they just don't want to constantly be focusing on it making young people depressed about our future and hating us as a country or as humanity. There are no real solutions to deal with it. The efforts over the past 20 years have not made any difference.
Our countries have seen many problems during our history, and England's recorded history is longer than yours. I don't think we've ever solved problems by ignoring them.
I'm struck by how in the Old Testament the true prophets - such as Jeremiah - gave some of the bleakest assessments, and got into bad trouble for doing so; but their forecasts were right.
I think big business keeps lying and worrying us by saying we can't do anything. In the UK we have managed to reduce our emissions; and, importantly, by a lot of minor small actions, which don't hurt us very much, if at all. Using energy more efficiently is cheaper. We've got a lot more insulation in our homes. Even in the UK we are using solar energy, as well as wind energy, and we're developing wave energy. And with your deserts you surely could generate massive solar energy! But, of course, big business doesn't like this very much! You cannot serve God and Mammon.
One of the best ways to turn the tide of rising carbon dioxide emissions is to get the trees to do it for us! The so-called 'Little Ice Age', a cold spell from about 1500- 1800, seems to have been largely caused by a vast increase in American jungles. In the 1500s disease wiped out 90% of the indigenous population of Central and South America, and the jungles advanced dramatically.
Yet the world is cutting down its jungles to grow oil palms, palm oil being in so much that we buy. I now go to a specialist shop to buy soap - at no more expense - which is free from palm oil.
You can criticise the Chinese a lot; they are cutting down their fossil fuel use, but not by enough. But one thing they are good at is planting trees. A lot of Chinese go out and plant.
And surely your young people are nothing like that feeble! Look how they are knuckling down to repairing tornado damage.
I do agree that failure to present hope is a bad thing. It's interesting that these bleak Old Testament prophets always ended on a note of hope. But any nation that doesn't realise its faults as well as its good points is doomed to failure.

The person who experienced this derecho has nothing to do with school boards or policy in our country. However, we ARE doing plenty to combat climate change, although it probably should have started decades ago. When traveling in Europe, though, it seems that methane is the fuel of choice there to heat homes. In the U.S., I have a "heat pump" which is clean energy. Many homes have solar panels as well. It is because it's a global issue that I commented. I have been seriously interested in the terrible weather you're suffering from, and commiserating with you.
As for the school boards, what I've heard is that some of your millionaires are pouring money into school board elections, so those elected are not representative of the people of Houston. But these big business people do represent a massive danger. (I'm a Governor of a school myself.)
Too many of us in England do have heating from natural gas. ( Although it is rare for UK homes to have air conditioning. ) But we have poor subsidies for the better ways you refer to. A General Election has just been called for July 4th; a change of government is likely; and better subsidies for these things are likely.
Let us beware of big business propaganda, not give up, and try to help the situation. The whole world needs to get together.

Why are you not in the bathroom? Your not real bright
I have a lot of experience with thunderstorms, I was safe in the hall and changed by mind going into the bathroom as those crazy winds started to let up. When I went to the window the worst was over, Tornados don't form on the back end of thunderstorms. I survived. Not being bright would have been filming the whole thing at the window or outside.
Thank you for your intense footage. Please stay away from windows next time. When something like this happens, you put your faith in God and Jesus and He will take care of you just like he did here. Breathe and know that it's all OK. Don't take it out on your innocent dog.
So how did "God and Jesus" take care of the several people who were killed? Wasn't one a mother with young kids?
