Started a week ago, and plan on going the full year. I'm shocked at how often the thought floats through my mind to buy something - so many random things! It's definitely increased my awareness of the way my mind seeks distraction.
50 years ago at the end of my teens, I lived for a few months with some monks in Devon, in a small village. There were no shops and I had no transport - there was a bus once a week. I was a volunteer, and there were one or two other volunteers also living there. I remember noticing at the time that I never bought anything and didn't miss shopping. In the evenings, we used to sit by the fire and chat, and during the day we did our work (cooking, working on the farm and in the garden, keeping house) together. We were content. What I notice about shopping addiction is that it has to do with isolation and loneliness. It offers a stimulus to replace human connection and companionship. If people are working together on projects that inspire them, or making music, or talking about issues they really care about, they aren't thinking about shopping - it becomes irrelevant. Nowadays, isolated by chronic illness and often lonely, I shop for solutions to unrelated problems, and to comfort myself and stave off despair. It's not the *things* I need; they are merely a distraction.
Hi Madeline, I have been following you for a while. But your minimalism videos and declutter videos, and now this awareness of subconscious shopping that is taking a toll on us are real eye openers to many. I truly appreciate your change... i am trying too.. hoping to be there soon....
I have also done a no buy month. The hard thing for me was when I was “allowed” to shop again after the month was over, I kind of went overboard and ended up making up for the no buy month.
Ive been doing no buy months every coupke of months for a year now. Its amazing how its helped me to review my "needed" items and helped me see how much if my choices are extras and not really needed after all. Just starting a new one this month and it has helped me to appreciate and use all the wonderful thjngs already in our life.
I haven't done a total no-buy, but I have done them on certain areas, such as make-up, books etc, for extended periods of time. Using your local library can be a good way to avoid buying books too. 👍🏻
I have never done a “no-buy” challenge. What I did do was a good closet clean up and I sold (and am still selling) items on Vinted. My closet clean up and declutter shocked me into not shopping for a few weeks. It is really time that I take your suggestions and put them into practice.
I'm doing a no buy year! It started out hard, is feeling fun after a weekend away. I'm sure it will feel hard again soon :) I've been uploading videos to YT to hold myself accountable and start something creative. That's been fun!
I’m doing a no buy clothing year. With the exception of socks and underwear. I started on the 1st January 2024. I’m waiting for the warm weather to come so I can change up my wardrobe. It’s only the start of Spring where I live. I’ve been surprised at how easy it has been until just last week. I’m wanting to get some news shoes and some new clothes for work, yet I’m going to try to see out the year.
Well done! I managed to go for exactly 10 months without purchasing any clothes and shoes😅. Originally I wanted to do 3 months but it turned to a competition with myself…was just curious how long I would manage to resist the urge to buy
Any tips on someone that is addicted to the hobby of shopping like walking around stores taking too long going way too often and always feeling the itch to go out even if I leave with needs or nothing but going when I don't have to. How to go straight home and not stop other places? Especially fast food . My toddler has appts couple times a week so we're out almost every morning and can't fight grabbing food or looking at stores
Wow. Thank you for the idea. I really need to freeze some spending but kinda going back and forth because I'm not sure how to start or which method that i should do. This video, for sure gonna help me ❤ Trying it too...
Hi!!! In a previous video you showed how you only have 2 small folders for paper file organization for your family and I was amazed. I have waaaay too many papers filed away for my family of 4. If you could do a video on how you were able to condense your paper files down to those 2 folders that would be greatly appreciated.
I almost bought a body oil after seeing an influencer talk about it, but then I remembered my huge pump of Aveno lotion I haven’t come close to finishing, and I stopped myself. I too am buying no product unless I run out of it. I’m using whatever cleansers, hair products, lotions I have before buying any others. We’ve also been using travel size toothpastes that our dentist gives us because we honestly don’t travel that often, and they were accumulating. Another thing I’ve started doing more regularly is looking at any subscribe and save items and checking my stash to see if I actually need it. More often than not, I haven’t finished the one I have, so there’s no need to restock. I’m just so tired of having all this extra stuff lying around. I’ve also been using my library for books, and if they don’t have one I’m interested in, I ask them to purchase it. Most of the time, they do.
Have you ever tried a No-Buy month? 💛

Such an interesting perspective, Penelope. Thank you for sharing with us 💛
Really helpful ideas thanks. I love the wishlist idea and how you noted that owning the thing doesn't live up to the anticipation of buying it!
So glad it was helpful. Thank you for watching, Rebecca 🫶

I want to try this. “Not buying is my second income” brilliant. ❤
I thought it was such a brilliant quote 🫶
I’m in a no buy month right now! 😁 I loved watching this. Hoping I do as well as you did. Good job! 👏🏻
Yay, you got this. Thank you so much for watching. 💛
Another great video! Thanks Madeline 😊

Hi! I did a video on paper clutter here: th-cam.com/video/vBMlP37hUIc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=02PJcGU3q7kq1kjR 💛 In case it helps.
Vinted is great as long as you only buy what you really need. I have found myself purchasing something just because it was a bargain.
Oh it can definitely get addicting, like any form of shopping. Thank you for watching, Cathryn 🫶
I really want to try this challenge and try stickying to it! very inspiring. Greetings from Argentina!
You can do it! Thank you so much for watching. 💛
Could you share where you buy your basics from - like leggings and T-shirts which are high quality and comfortable
Usually leggings are either Adanola or Lululemon, and t-shirts I love COS at the moment. I’ll share my full capsule wardrobe soon x

I’m on a no buy month now in September, really no buy anything at all
Amazing. Good luck, Sandy!
Cheers from Romania :)
Far too challenging 😢
