    For 1957, the entire train sequence looks fantastic. The whole part with the dude getting snatched and fought over at 6:32 in black and white just looks horrifying.

    This movie really does have some of the best stop motion humans animation of any film. Peterson really had a feel for realistic movements of his human puppets.

    The final battle scene is spectacular. Not only are the scorpions well animated, but so are the miniature Pershing tanks.

    What a great old school monster film. It's incredible how aggressive & powerful the stop motion monsters in Willis O'Brien & Pete Petersons films are. They really set a good example of how it ought to be done. The Black Scorpion is one of the most formidable stop motion monsters ever. The big showdown at the stadium is magnificent with Mr. Black throwing tanks effortlessly around while withstanding constant heavy bombardment. The military finally managed to bring him down but it was not easy.

    BLACK SCORPION: A stop motion animation fan's dream. In glorious B & W - which I think helps the effects. You get animated giant insects. SCORPIONS no less - one of the top 3 creepy crawlies ever! And..not one just scorpion but a rampaging hoard of them!
    Best of all, you don't only see the monster at the very end of the movie, oh no, you see the giant scorpions a whole lot! Destroying all kinds of things! My favorite is the head-on collision with the train - the train's POV of it's lights hitting the on coming behemoth-bug is spectacular. An awesome scene. As are many of the shots showing battles with other monsters, houses being destroyed and people getting devoured. Whew!
    The animators in this film really thought up every great action they could they could imagine with their monster scorpions, with no less a talent then the great Willis O'Brien ( King Kong ) supervising. Really one of the best stop-motion animated films from that period.
    One of my favorite science fiction / horror films from that time period.

      @@YourLocalJamesHetfieldFangirl It all depends on the usage, of course; I have seen plenty of examples of both done beautifully, and done cheaply and shoddily. Would still take either over CGI, since with both there is at least an actual physical object being filmed.

    When I was a heedless 14 or 15-year-old in the Fifties this was my favorite monster movie, along with The Attack of the Flying Saucers. What I liked about both of them was the sheer body count. Hundreds of people getting killed and eaten! Wow! The other monster and sci-fi movies were pale in comparison.

    The train sequence uses a Lionel engine # 1666 and the cars are people silhouette lit and for a brief second you can see on the coal car where it reads Lionel Lines. The ending scene where the Scorpion is being attacked and killed by the military---Some of the vehicles look like they used Dinky toy military vehicles. Oh the wonders of freeze frames.

    3:54 I'm assuming most people here know the urban legend of how the spider thing here MIGHT be recycled from the lost spider pit sequence in the original King Kong.

    • @SupremeGreatGrandmaster
      @SupremeGreatGrandmaster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's DEFINITELY the pit spider. The inch-worm creature is the monster referred to as "tentacled creature" in the King Kong script. It's also from the pit scene.

    CGI is all well and good, but stop motion monsters have an intensity that make them seem all the more frightening.

      I think it's because of the realness of them. You know subconsciously that these are puppets. But the textures and lighting make them seem way more than that.

    This movie has some of Willis O'Brien's best work. Unfortunately, his has to share the screen with other effects artists whose work is obviously lesser. What is not shown in this clip is the director's habit of re-using effects shots, and resorting to using traveling matte shadows, with rostrum zooming in, and recycling them to boot. The sight is embarassing. The movie itself is average for its type, but it would have been better had it relied on sparing use of O'Brien's effects and done without the bad-looking ones.
