  • As far as SUVs go, BMW X5 is one of the cooler ones you can get, providing luxury and power all in one with styling that's aggressive, but also approachable. Just like any other BMW, there are problems to expect on the 3rd generation BMW X5 that's also known as the BMW F15 as they age. Luckily, X5 is a very popular car so BMW has used some of the best engines they have after a few years of fixes and upgrade. In this video, I discuss problems that are common to the entire range and then go into specifics on each version of the car such as the sDrive35i and xDrive 35i with the N55 engine, the xDrive50i with the n63tu engine and the eDrive40i with the n20 engine and hybrid system. This video covers BMW X5s manufactured from 2013-2018 or 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 model years.

After 2015 bmw revised the n20 with new timing guides. The n20 is as reliable as the n55. The x5 40e is actually very reliable. There is a 8 year 100k warranty on the hybrid system.

so engine 2.0 in hybrid is unreliable? Anyone has any feedback on hybrid system reliability- switching to different modes/ battery life etc?

    • @crappy60

The N20 in my experience has not been a bad motor but then again mine was maintained well and I am meticulous with maintance because it is a turbo. They’re known to have timing chain guide issues and injection issues, which BMW has addressed and will inspect any vehicle with that motor for free because there is a lawsuit.

I bought a 15 x50i in 2018 with 29k miles. 40k miles later, just replaced tire and oil. Very reliable although it’s starting to eat oil between changes. Transmission seems to short shift in normal mode and holds gears too long in sport mode. So I find myself driving in eco because it’s most normal. One of my rear suspension bags is leaking and sits low some over nights.

'14 X5 M sport. Same with our suspension bag after about 5/6 years. Make sure you replace soon (cost us about $700 for a better aftermarket version). If you don't fix soon your compressor is working overtime and could go out.

That’s because 10,000 miles between oil changes is way too long and there are low tension piston rings installed in the engines and that’s what causes the oil consumption it’s recommended that you do oil changes at 5000 miles regardless of what the manufacturer says

They can be replaced with aftermarket shocks or also with the non-oem air bags. He is just talking about what “can” go wrong. It is all depends on how you take care of it. I have a 2018 35id and I can say, comparing with many other cars I owned and still own, the quality is way higher. However, I’m sure, eventually something will fail in time, but there is no car outhere bullet proof. BMW is a high tech car and has more sensors that probably most of other cars. So, if you can troubleshooting yourself and do regular mtce than this is for you. If not, eiher find a shop specialized in BMW and stay away from dealer or if if you are a guy who can afford, going to the dealer can be pricey even for simple jobs like replacing a light bulb. BTW, on YT there tonns of dyi videos, also there is a site you can create a free account where you will find all the oem maintenance procedures to fix it youself, absolutely everything. Parts are no more expensive that other cars like VW, GM or Toyota.

I have a 2018 35id. Bought it second hand. All my friends asked me: RU crazy? Not at all. People here in NAmerica don’t know much about diesel engines. These engines can go easly up and over 1 million km. However, this doesn’t mean there won’t be some parts to be replaced down the road, which is expected for an aged car. Rubber seals and hoses won’t last forever, so a preventive replacement is always good. Sensors, starters, alternators, thermostats etc, eventually will fail. Parts are equally priced with other brands, btw. Either way, they are built to last a long time. Driving experience: feels like riding a bull, if you remember that cartoon with a bull snifing a flower, being very calm and gentle but when got stinged by a bee, he turned into a beast. Comparing with my previous two hybrid highlander is like day and night. Not to mention the confort and luxury on board. I leave in Canada and here the winters are long and lots of salt on the roads. When I bought mine, 80000km on board, I was pleased by the fact it didn’t have any signs of rust underneath. Spotless, like day one from the factory. I have lease returned two highlanders and after less than 4 years, both rusted underneath. Not to mention one had rust on the rear trunk door around the handle ornament.
