Letters volumes have decreased dramatically but flyers, leaflets and parcels have increased. Postman mail sacks have increased substantially in weight and walking up long flights of flats making deliveries with a heavy sack is no joke. True, the work is unskilled when compared to other key service jobs, but a reasonable cost of living wage is needed, don't you think??

As very few people send cards and the cost of sending them is prohibitive it won't make much difference. As for parcels there are alternative methods. Gift vouchers will suffice if items can't be sent. The reality is there's genuine competition now. All this 'we're behind you brothers and sisters' means very little.

You do get areas where mail deliveries are not up to expected standards but that maybe down to the local delivery office administration, and if you are unhappy with the service then you can complain. However, posties do a very good job delivering in all weather and in some areas are the only sources of communication for vulnerable, aged, lonely people. Many will in fact go all out to help customers that are in distress and a lot of this is not made public.
