Right on! These have made for excellent birthday gifts for me as well. Everyone who has rode in my car has asked where I got it.

Just wanted to say thanks for this great idea! I just did it with my 2013 Impreza. Had to put a bit of pressure to wedge it in there. It was a really tight fit and I didn't want to wedge it in as much as you did but it looks like it'll be fine. Using a Samsung Galaxy S3 and its a perfect fit. Thanks again!

Thanks for review. I have a 2012 Subaru Legacy. Though I loved the idea of the CD slot mount, it blocked view + access to radio. Though my car interior isn't exactly like your Impreza, this gave me a good idea for mine! (Plus the slot mount without the cradle (just the sticky pad) was not a good angle b/c my CD player is up so high).

No worries! Its an awesome mount. My dash trim has gained some memory now (expansion from fit)...not sure if I took the mount out that it would return to normal or not...not my concern though, as this totally works for me.

They changed the lower lip on the smart phone mount to where it's now like an open 2 prong fork, which would be great except it doesn't stick out *quite* as far. Still I was able to mount my new LG G3 in it the same way you have it in my 2014 Impreza Base and it after tightening up the base screw a bit to hold the extra heft of the phone, it seems to be holding up pretty well. Thanks for the idea.

You know I actually broke the lips off (not on purpose). The mount still has enough friction to hold the phone in place, but it does take two hands now to secure the phone. My buddy got the new magnetic mount and it seems pretty sweet, with the exception of having to use a stick on pad for magnetic properties.

I didn't use any wedges. The Mountek fin fit in the the groove on my dash and then I just used the adjustment screw to expand the "fin" within the groove a little bit. Has been nice and snug since I installed.

Glad you posted this as I was considering something similar. This basically turns the Mountek into a ProClip mount style. I do fear messing up the fit/finish of my car though. May I ask what you used to wedge in there to open it up enough to accept the Mountek fins? And… Did you have to expand the fins or was it tight enough just by pressure after you released the wedge item?

How's the mount holding up after a few years?

+ctg616 still works great! I actually upgraded to a magnetic mount now. Even faster for docking the phone in the car.

Too be honest - I sold the Subaru, so I am now using my Mitsubishi Outlander's CD Slot.
