Lie Nielsen Toolworks factory tour - making handplanes

  • if you've ever wondered what the shop and showroom of the Lie Nielsen Toolworks looked like, then this video should satisfy your urges! The showroom is more than just a sales floor, it is a completely open tool testing ground where you can test drive any of the tools they offer for sale BEFORE you buy it! as far as i am aware, this is the only place where you can test drive tools hand tools and hand planes to see how you like them, or even IF you like them, and the shop is a beauty of organization, cleanliness, and craftsmanship!
Apart from the amazing showroom, and the friendly staff the shop is one of the most organized machine shops i've ever seen... AND CLEANEST! Sadly i must admit that even my own machine shop falls short in these departments. it was a very interesting contrast to see the scale of the equipment at the factory... everything was just so tiny.
during the shop tour portion of this video you will see alot of familiar equipment, Bridgeport milling machines being the large part of that. i counted at least a dozen (likely more) small surface grinders, and dozens of small CNC milling machines most of which were Haas Machines.
I've held hand planes by Stanley, wood river, Veritas, and others, but i can say without hesitation that the Lie Nielsen hand planes i test drove had the "quality feel' that all others were lacking. after seeing how much work goes into these tools, i wonder how they can sell them so reasonably.
DISCLOSURE: I contacted the Lie Nielsen Toolworks to ask permission to film, they have not paid me nor compensated me in any way to produce this video. All of the thoughts expressed are entirely my own.
I'd like to thank Thomas and the staff at Lie Nielsen Toolworks for granting me access to their facility, although i feel like the video did not do them justice. below you will find all the links to the Lie Nielsen online properties, be sure to check them out :

I'm an old man now still using all my planes most of them pre World War Two they are all razor sharp can't stand using a dull plane after watching this video and seeing the passion this guy has with his company I am very well tempted to purchase one of his planes as if I really needed another plane at my age 76 that's why I don't like using a dull plane at that age you can't push a dull plane ha ha ha you all have a nice day and happy planning

    Hi all
Peter from Australia. I did this tour in 2011 when in Maine. Got an individual tour one on one and enjoyed it very much. Currently own a 62, the block plane and a shoulder plane. I make furniture here and saw Tom a few years ago in Bungendore NSW. The tools are great and I am always pleased I bought them. Tom is a true American legend.

I mean, I havent been doing Wood Woorking very long but one thing that became apparent early on was Lie Neilson planes are the top of the food chain for most people....Im glad despite all the success the place still seems to give off a family vibe...which to me is part of the reason they are so damn good...once things become to corporate almost always the little details get missed.
If things eventually p/u on my part I would absolutely love to own a plane made by them.
    Thanks for the vid!!

I looooove Lie Nielsen planes!! I have 16 of them, spokeshaves, chisels, saws, scrapers, screwdrivers, and much more!! My very first plane was a #5, and from then on I was hooked!! I will never purchase another brand other than Lie Nielsen, ever!! I am a true fan of the passion and elegance that goes into their products!! When they began to make their planes, they modeled them from the Stanley Bedrock planes but, tightened the heck out of the tolerances!! This took the planes from just mere wood removers to finishing planes!! These things are so awesome that you don’t have to use sandpaper afterwards, because sandpaper cannot give you a more perfect and smooth finish than Lie Nielsen planes!! Oh, and by the way brother, I am not being a butt whole or know it all when I say this, I am just trying to help you out! But Lie Nielsen is pronounced (Lee Nielsen), just trying to get you on the same page brother!! I loooove and appreciate everything you do in your videos, thank you very much!! Keep up the good work!!

I believe it was Rob Cosman who commented about spending what at first seems like “a little too much” than you can afford, but how that won’t matter much five years down the road if the tool brings you great joy and you are really proud to hold it in your hand because it just “feels so right.” That being said, everyone has their limits, and for some of us it’s like owning a Ferrari but only having the skill to drive it down to the Kroger twice a week.

I love Nielsen tool's their handplanes are great but they are actually copies of Stanley's handplanes. That said it's the only company in my mind that has done as good a job re-making Stanley's tool's and some are even better than the original!!! 👍🇬🇧

    • @freddiemercurious
      @freddiemercurious 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As the man mentioned, that's their intent. They took from the best who might not be making great tools as consistently anymore; and they've improved upon them in some respects. In other respects, their product is bang on every time. Not for everyone, but those who purchase them have very high expectations that are just not met by Kobalt, Irwin, and, dare I say, the Stanley of today.

Let’s be honest everyone. This is basic engineering. Nothing special. I was doing this simple stuff 30 years ago. Are you insane? That's what happened to the Stanley plant in my town, it shut down so they could move production to china. Now Stanley is garbage.

The big guy walking back and forth to the table in the background that just has to interrupt this great interview several times. Does he not know there is an interview going on with a camera? And right in front of the CEO too?. Does he need his 15 minutes of fame? Dude stay out of the shot please! It's distracting!

Good gawd, how can you stand to tell people about the tools and brand if you don't know how to pronounce the name. I had to stop watching..Never mind that it's crap manners to interview someone and not know how to pronounce their name, it's brand name at this point.

Mr Nielsen is an incredibly nice guy and it was a pleasure to meet him. like myself, he isn't bothered when someone mispronounces his name. English is not my first language so I do make mistakes from time to time. However, it appears that many people do enjoy looking down their noses at others whom unknowingly mispronounce words or names. It is clear which side of that line you and I are on.
