The conclusion of the video is skip out 1/3 of Ezio’s story, overthrowing the Borgia, concluding his mission carried over from two and miss possibly one of the most memorable end games, (and I’m not saying Rev’s wasn’t at all I love it) with Ezio using the apple to cripple a poison Caesare’s army was SO FUCKING cool! I’d also like to mention out of respect for your video, opinion, and putting all of this out there that I agree the mid portion of the game is more or less a nothing burger where in 2 there was SO MUCH more to do, along with tailing being extremely prevalent in the story, but I still find that seeing Ezio’s story through is for one important so we aren’t missing puzzle pieces in the middle area, but it sets up Revalations so nicely with him wrapping up everything in Italy, to ship himself out to Constantinople, was very much welcomed and I know that wasn’t mentioned I just felt the need to assert that! 😅

So I am rewatching my three videos on the Ezio trilogy for another video I'm working on now. Looking back on this video I feel like I was a little harsh on this game. I even eyerolled hearing myself say that people should skip it because that's just a dumb thing to say. As you said, skipping the middle entry of a trilogy isn't a good idea, and if I wrote this video today I definitely wouldn't have said that. I think you hit the nail on the head that beginning and ending are AWESOME, but everything in the middle is a nothing burger. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You are Ezio in his prime as the mentor of the Italian branch of the Brotherhood. He is overpowered, he’s learned the ability to chain together instant kill without a second thought making combat trivial, though it is better than he circle, square, kill everything moto in the likes of 3, and 4. He feels powerful, and I think that’s exactly what ubisoft wanted.

I think the combat is meant to be easy because Ezio is a Master Assassin turned Mentor here. You can't really expect someone like that to have a hard time killing enemies. Even Older Ezio in Revelations almost single-handedly destroyed a whole army in the opening montage and only lost because his hidden blade broke.

Brotherhood is the less significant of the three Ezio games, but it is still a fun ride. More important than Ezio's story, in this game, is Desmond's, since it introduces us to the character of Juno, gives a shocking ending to a certain character whose name I am not going to mention in case someone reading this hasn't played the game, and it neatly set the stakes for Desmond's journey in Revelations.

Your first sentence is a very accurate way to describe my thoughts on the game. I had fun playing through it again because there are many moments that are hopped up on jet fuel, but the story felt like it was just there to service set pieces. You are correct also that Desmond's story sees more interesting developments than Ezio.

I kinda just cant agree with you on the combat, everything else i kinda agree except for the map, i think rome is just the perfect area to be an assassin in but idc that the combat is easy. In fact i kinda believe its ment to be flashy. We're ment to feel powerful, we're ment to be ezio in his prime. Also, if you're killing 10 enemies without taking a single hit in this game it just means you actually have good reaction timing because its not always easy to counter every enemy all the time. Even in the video i see where you couldnt react fast enough and you got hit. If its so easy then you shouldnt be taking damage...just saying...the combat system isnt just u waiting to counter chain kill everyone. It takes a bit of knowledge and knowing which weapons are better for the moment, if im fighting enemies with spears ill use my hidden blade since its the only weapon that will let me counter them, if a enemy is on a horse and are charging after me i use my sword to counter them, if 3 enemies are charging after me i dont have to wait for them i just equip my knife and then throw all my knifes at them like the game can be easy if you want it to be or it can be harder if you want it to be. So overall, the combat is not a issue, you wanting it to be harder is your problem not the games.

    • @solidvick
      @solidvick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

That's fair, I think it's always a careful balance between giving a player the power fantasy of an assassin or warrior or whatever the protagonist is and making the combat engaging. At the end of the day the combat is more of a nitpick than anything. If I was reviewing this on a ?/10 scale, the combat doesn't bother enough to even drop it a whole point. It's just me being picky for the sake of the review which I acknowledge.

The whole thing literelly boil down to hold r2 press counter, how the fuck does that require good reaction time? Many game come jut befkre it that has good and deep combat, the Stealth is also ain't even that good, despite the fact that the tool for it was LITERALLY inside the company.
Oh wow, the horsemen are SO hard to deal with, gosh, equipping my sword and press counter is so hard.
And is there even an actual consequence to your mistake? You can heal all the time anytime you like, you can still feel powerful while making something challenging and deep, in fact, that make us feel even more powerful, you're a literal one man army holding your own against countless soldier executing flawless technique you take hours to master, infiltrate the most heavily guarded palace with all tool and strategy at your disposal undetected.
That never happen in brotherhood, it is undoubtedly better than ac 2, but that's not even that high of a praise.

They basically restrict gameplay by taking away our "freedom" to approach missions the way we see fit with the tools at our disposal.
And most of them are *A REAL PAIN* like "Finish the mission under this many minutes" or "Remain undetected" or "Don't take any damage*.
I hate it that Ubisoft kept pushing them on us from *Brotherhood* all the wat to *Syndicate* and I'm *sooooo glad* they're *FINALLY* gone in the latest entries. 😍

  • @icarusgaming6269
    @icarusgaming6269 ปีที่แล้ว +3

AC's engine didn't evolve at all throughout the course of the Ezio trilogy, so this noticeable improvement is probably just Ubi Montreal getting better with their tools and the hardware they develop for
If you hold attack to chain kill instead of mashing it you'll do a variant of the move that costs one ammo of the associated projectile type (hidden blades have none). This is one of the ways I like to self-impose some challenge and depth back into the combat since AC2's intricate stagger system and button combos were removed. If I don't have any ammo, I can't chain kill
Renovating landmarks (except the aqueduct), collectibles, and faction missions absolutely fit into your narrative about Ubisoft's checklist design philosophy, but Borgia towers, usable shops, and HQs do not. These have a lasting impact on how you interact with the world, opening new paths that are no longer covered in enemy patrols, placing additional faction groups to help you infiltrate, and reducing the distance you have to travel to refill your consumables. This all increases your operable territory, the area in which you can comfortably conduct missions with all the supports, supplies, and movement that you need. If you're doing these things out of an obligatory sense of completionism, then you're not seeing the systematic effects they have on the world design. If you're doing them in whatever order you find convenient, then you're not strategizing where and what changes you need to affect. This is what makes the difference between Far Cry 5 as a guerilla warfare simulator and AC Odyssey as a 90s collect-a-thon stretched out beyond the 100-hour mark. These things are not the same. It also ties into the overarching issue of AC being too forgiving since it's not very hard to complete the game without completing a singular influence activity. Players have no reason to discover the 70% of systems they're missing if they can get by just fine on the 30% they do understand
When your Assassins hit max level and you get the Mentor cutscene, they become overpowered tools of destruction that obliterate scores of enemies at a time. Every single time you call them in, they drop a *free* smoke bomb, concealing their own actions, any actions you perform relative to guards on the other side of the smoke, fire off a few extra projectiles for good measure, and then vanish. You can complete entire missions with just recruits once you reach Mentor status

This was always the struggle with the AC series, Ubisoft would constantly develop new systems that had the potential to create a great unified experience but I don't think any game in the series ever actually made all its systems work cohesively.
I've been replaying MGS V recently and that is a game where literally every action you take in some way affects another gameplay system. On top of that, every one of those systems plays into the narrative and the story that's being told. To top it all off, the actual stealth and gameplay is pretty much perfect with an insane level of refinement and depth. It's just such a shame none of the AC series ever had that one actual instance where they managed to just get everything right.

Idk man. I just played Ac 1, 2, brotherhood, revelations, blackflag, and freedom cry, all for the first time in my life and Brotherhood seemed the like the best overall game. The good graphics, elite story, addicting combat, new variety of missions, great soundtrack, good world, amazing Desmond/real life gameplay, made for the best all around experience for me at least.
Revelations would've been that if it weren't for all the bugs, some that you can't fix. As someone who has literally no nostalgia bias from it since well...this was the first time in my 18 year life I ever touched AC games, it seems like it holds up the best for it's age and again has the best all around experience.
Another big plus was the length of the game. It's one of the shortest in the series and that's perfect. A story shouldn't be 19 hours like Ac2 but more like 12-16. There's side content if you're aren't bored of the game by the end of the story but as well the story doesn't leave you begging that the end of the sequence you're on is the last one.
And I personally completely disagree with you combat insults. I found that to be the games biggest improvement over AC2. AC2's had me standing there either spamming for three minutes or waiting twenty seconds to block and then rinse and repeat that three or four times just to kill an enemy. In this you felt like one of the best assassin's in the world, these little guards shouldn't be able to put up any fight against you, the bosses should and they did. Should've they been harder sure, but when it comes to the normal enemies you should be going through them like clock work especially since you've now been an assassin for so long.

Ac1 and ac2 has thematic concepts and ideas in the form of what I thought was great stories encapsulated in a video game. Brotherhood felt like a combination of very good game mechanics put together with a thin shell of narrative focus. I agree with almost everything mentioned in this video, I felt the same when I first played brotherhood after 1 and 2. I was having so much fun with the mechanics that I couldn't put it down but I was constantly disappointed with the tone of the game with respect to the previous entries. I think one of the major factors that leaves a bad taste is as you mentioned, the amount of things to do. I think the premise of the story and setting was a missed opportunity; I strongly feel the soundtrack complements the disdain of the tone in this game, I think addition of more mellow and ambient soundtrack without precession would add more to the feel of it especially when coming from ac2 but this is just my preference, I do think the soundtrack is great but not in this context. The style of delivery of dialogues and story threw me off along with the lackluster story which I think would have done okay if the presentation was upped a notch. It definitely filled holes left in ac2 but the way it filled them could've been much more elegant, this might be because of patrice leaving ubisoft around that time which somewhat explains the tonal shift. I think this game Is like sugar I love it but I know it's not good for me, in this context the game doesn't do complete justice to ezio's backstop.i do think all the side missions were top notch. 100% sync I feel is ubisoft using the animus as an excuse to put standard video gamey stuff, unlike an addition to the core story like in the previous games. All in all this is the definition i use for anything I use the love-hate analogy for.

I just love the wonky movement in this game. i love how multiple different moves are bound to the same button so when you try to execute them it never works right. oh and don't forget the amazing camera angles and turn around all over the place and make parkour SO ANNOYING. I don't care about story when I'm playing a game. if the gameplay sucks then the game sucks. if the story is good and gameplay sucks, then right a book or make a movie.

I played through AC2 enjoyed the deep story from start to finish.
Got excited to play brotherhood and having just finished it i feel very let down and confused why i thought brotherhood was the best. I felt their was barely any story. But a ton of side stuff which dont really fit into the story they are there to make the game longer.
I finished the story quick and haven't even unlocked half the gadgets fron leonardo. Which i feel should be part of the story again. Same with destroying his weapons as the Borgia forcing him to make them.
I think i was onlh on like leve 2 armour and never bought a new weapon......i should not have been able to complete the game with these and without difficulty. It feels strange.
Fingers crossed for revelations cause i have fond memories of that as well 😂

that ones good, it my 3rd favorite in the series, behind unity and syndicate
unity was great but flawed and syndicate was unity but more polished and just being more unity with better combat mechanics
i know its a cliche thing to say at this point, but syndicate made unity feel like a beta, thats how much better it is

One davinci mission, which features the flying machine, which requires you to cap your fps to 60 to be able to turn...or the final fight with Cesare that requires alot of pc witchcraft to actually play the cutscene on the wall...man i love this game but it had some of the worst bugs in the franchise

@@snare3680 Ya no ive never seen those 2 games...definitely dont have 100+ hrs in Valhalla and 50+ in Unity...but those are very different. Ive had some hilarious visual bugs in both but not something that completely breaks a game mechanic or locks me out of finishing a main story mission, nor was any of it caused by a setting I turned on that ubi put in the game. The few bugs ive seen in valhalla ive only encountered once or twice and they seem fixed later on. Unity was an ambitious move and a big change from the last game (even a new engine I believe)...Most of brotherhood is just a copy paste from AC2 which makes the bugs even weirder and in a way more annoying since AC2 ran without issues.

    • @Pragmatic__

@@snare3680 Also Unity is universally known to have been buggy AF on launch...Brotherhood on the other hand is often praised as one of if not the best game in the series...its in my personal top 3 but that doesn't mean that there aren't cracks in its armor

Yeah that happened more often than not, and its annoying since my pc can run 144 hz and I had to go multiple times into the settings and change to 60hz. It also happened in Revelations but not in the rest of the series.

This video is the greatest thing ever made. I bought the ezio collection, excited about brotherhood because people said it was so good,.only to realise after the opening sections I was really bored. I watched a TH-cam story summary and found out that the gameplay and story are mid. Honnestly, I think rogue was way better because the story and concept was incredible. Thank you for pointing out the truth.

I have different problem with this game, but I kinda understand yours too because, it is there and I understand where it comes from. Anyhow, my problem with this game is in restrictions and repetitive missions design. Like, you have your mission where you have to sneak in to the castle, kill some guards and eliminate your target, but every time something goes wrong. Like, you have your target but it surrounded by gourds. You kill the guards but out of nowhere someone of them notices you and long story short, your mission get's failed because you got spotted and you have to restart it from the beginning or from the checkpoint. I don't like that. Sure, the same thing was in previous two games, but it wasn't over the top like in Brotherhood. And then, despite that you have a Rome, as this big city to explore, and many parts of it are locked and you can't get in to them early to deal with those towers and be done with them.
Like, if those sections are not available then why do you display a towers that I have to visit on those locations on the map? This makes no sense. And so I stopped on the mission, where you have to help this old guy rescue his wife from the castle or camp of one of the generals who kidnapped her. And I stuck in the section of this mission, where you have to dress up as enemy guards and walk to the castle, to rescue that lady. And there is one moment in this section, where you have to stop and kill 3 guards. But there is a problem. You kill them, and other none story guards notices you, and if they attack you, the mission is automatically over and you have to restart all over again. And that was enough for me. I said to myself that, f-ck it, I have enough. I'm done with Assassin's Creed and I don't want to play anymore. I was so pissed that I had massive headache and had to take a break and few pills to stop my head from killing me.
And this is what's wrong with AC Brotherhood. It is linier AND too much restricted. Again, first two AC games was restricted too, but not as much as this one. In this one tho, I have to literally cheat your way out, in order to not fail the mission because it breaks as soon as some none story character sees you. But there was another mission that gone way broken for me. Where you had to go to the party and kill this one fat guy. And you know what I did? Instead of going through the guards and crowd of people, hiding among them, I climbed up the wall, killed every guard on the roofs and then started to follow that fat guy on the roofs. But what happened is that, instead of going straight to the party, he ran away back to the city, and when I tried to kill him, Ezio simply did not attacked him even if I aim on him. I tried to shoot him with the gun, with crossbow, sending my assassins to take him down and nothing worked. And so I got so pissed that I just ran very fast through the crowd, ignoring the guards, and then cutscene played out with that guy on the party and only then I was able to kill him. All tho I failed in my first attempt, after that bug, and fell from the cliff down, and had to restart all over again. But I did it and thought that nothing can go wrong. Yeah, right. If only I knew, I would not even try to play this game.
Thus why I said to myself that it is time to stop. That I had enough of Assassin's Creed. And maybe the next time I will start with AC Brotherhood and play all three games backwards, I don't know. But now, I just got pissed of it and tired very and very badly. It just makes me sick. If I knew who are the designers on this game, I would ask them directly, what were they smoking that AC Brotherhood is so bad. What kind of junk they were smoking that they had to make this game frustrating to the point that it gives a headache.
