Pro tip.. fill bottom half with potting mix top half with seed starter. Will save alot of money. Or you can sift potting soil (dont try this with small seeds)
indeed I have...cabbage, cauliflower, lettuces, collards and spinach..
I started cabbage, broccoli, mustard, collards and kale. Still need to start my rutabagas.
I have cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, cantaloupe growing.
I used these air prune trays from Bootstrap Farmer this past spring and was very impressed. I will admit I have not used the Proptek trays, to make a comparison. For me, the Bootstrap trays were simply more affordable and fit my space better.
I am doing all my fall seed planting in ground under shade cloth. Here we can’t plant much until October. I will start my celery, onions and parsley in cells.
started Brassicas 7/25 in 6b using same green tray
Bought my seed starting mix ingredients and will be starting my fall plants. Very excited - keeping it simple with lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, and various flowers. Will be spending fall/winter getting the full garden built and ready for spring. Great video Travis!
I use vermiculite instead of perlite as vermiculite holds onto moisture much better.
started our seeds last week in north fl. great stuff Trav
Our temperatures have been hovering close to 100. This is the first cool day we have had and so I have not sown any fall garden plants yet.
Started some seeds as well but man you got sweaty🤣. I get it though cause I live in GA as well.
I started my broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage in a tray last week. It's been well over 100F here in central Texas all summer and it peaked at 108F yesterday, so we'll see how it goes. I may need to replant. Spotty germination on some older seeds, so I bought some new ones and planted the yesterday. The heat is off the charts. You can't garden very well in this kind of heat.
Right here with you in northern Louisiana. It's been brutal. 106 here and I'm trying green beans and small carrots tomorrow. Started lots of brassicas inside today and hope I'm not too late. Also may try some peas
Ducks are back!😊. I’ve got 1/2 my fall sowing down with some spotty germ.
I love PropTek trays! PropTek does make a 10x20'ish tray (they call them 10x20), but they are a little bigger than traditional 10x20's (21.1" x 10.6") and need a different bottom tray. The Garland XL is the best bottom tray option I've found so far, and it's a little bigger than the PropTek 10x20's at 23" x 16". They do work with standard 10x20 heating mats though. I've been using their 144 cell "10x20" and even cut 2 of mine down into sets of 6 cell, 15 cell, and 30 cell sizes that will fit the Garland 12 cell and 24 cell starter "kits" (Same as Hoss Tools and Gardner Supply 12 and 24 cell kits). I trimmed mine on a radial arm saw, but a band saw would probably work better (use extreme caution - as this is dangerous in the smaller sizes). Good news is you cut them once and they last for years (I'm on my 3rd year using the cut mini-trays and 4th on my 144 cel PropTek's). I wish PropTek made a 72 cell in the 10x20 size as the 144 cells are a little smallish for some plants IMO. The 162 PropTek like you have is a better cell size for a wider variety of plants, but it's just so dang big for those of us who don't have greenhouses with shelves like yours (they are 13"x26"). I'm not sure I like those new green trays. I had looked at them a while back and passed on ordering a set. I'll just stick with what I have for now. Thanks for another great video, Travis!!!!!
Love your content! With the green trays, because of the large hole in the bottom so that it's easy to remove seedlings when transplanting, after you fill the tray, remove the soil underneath by emptying the bottom tray. Then replace the green tray and do your dimpling, seed planting and respray with water. That way you have a full pot with minimal waste. Takes longer to explain it than doing it.
Happy Gardening my friend from the inland desert region of So-Cal, zone 8b.
Fabric pots allow for air pruning too. They roots may stick out an inch, or two at first, but they will soon shrivel off and die (i.e. be "air pruned").
Lacking a greenhouse, I start my seedling indoors under grow lights in a shed that's heated and air conditioned. I move them out a few weeks before planting to harden off. The only thing I need transplants for is collards and lettuce, everything else is direct seeded. I wanted to plant carrots and beets in the ground but next week is supposed to be really hot with temps approaching 100.
Planted cabbage and broccoli seeds last Tuesday. All but one variety of cabbage are up and looking good. We need some rain in Tallahassee. Keep up the good work!
I put my fall tomatoes in my wickie tubs Aug 17 here in creek county Oklahoma.
Great video nice trays it will be interesting to see if there's any difference in your starts 👍
Today I started hardening off my 'gai lan' seedlings (Chinese broccoli). Started seeds on 8/1.
Planted last Saturday!
Great info can't wait for the fall garden. Had to cover my garden, NE Florida had a bumper crop of weeds. I'm still baby sitting some Sugar Baby watermelons. Come on Turnip patch!!
I have been starting my Fall garden seeds, along with more end of Summer cucumbers and squash seeds. Hopefully these 100+ days won't last much longer.
haha hello ducks at 5:30
Started some of mine 2 weeks ago. They are in the garage under grow lights.
I'm in fall is coming denial, so I havent started any fall seeds yet. :) The good news is that the fig tree I ordered from you arrived Thursday and looks like it is starting to grow already! :)
Wonderful!
Second. Travis, buy a damn shade cloth to throw over your greenhouse for goodness sake. My fall seedlings always stretch outside because of the humidity, for this reason I think it's a lot easier to start seedlings in the Spring. I start all my fall seedlings under grow lights.
I don't really have any issues with mine stretching. Although you couldn't tell it on this video, it's actually a little cooler inside the greenhouse this time of year than it is outside.
@@LazyDogFarm I'm right next to a few bodies of water (a marsh) so I think the humidity is extra high on my farm.
My first set of seeds wouldn’t come up on my front porch, too hot! Tried again inside and everything popping in a couple days. It hit 110° today. North Central Texas.
I purchased the 231 deep cell trays for onion and leeks. I’m wondering if I can also use these for other plants since they are deep and give more room for roots. I have 10 of these babies and would love to put them all to use but I’m not growing that many onions and leeks. I really like the construction of the module trays and square bottom trays. I think they’ll last the rest of my gardening life!
You can use those deep cell trays for other stuff. But you just have to be a little more timely with getting them in the ground because the cells are smaller.
Im looking forward to seeing how the Win Strip trays perform. I've never used a seed starting tray with a large opening on the bottom. Will you up pot your seedlings to larger containers inside the greenhouse before you transplant them to the garden? I was trying to figure out how many weeks you keep them in the seed starting trays.
They'll get planted straight from these trays into the ground.
You have looked at the weather forecast for the next couple weeks, right? It's going to be 100% almost every day and the heat index is going to be off the charts. I'm starting my plants next week but in the house. I'll have to get another light because the one I have won't be enough, but those young plants will melt in that heat.
I filmed this a week ago, before we realized that temps were going to get that high next week. My plan is to just water frequently and cool down the soil. Hopefully it works.
Let me ask a better question
I’m curious What are your temperatures
I have a structure that has shade cloth
I’ve started some seeds indoors
But I certainly will take a chance as soon as is safe
I'm in South Georgia this coming week going to get 99 degrees so I'm holding off on seeds starting for another week.
Where do you get your pro mix for seed starting?
Travis just about to start fall it's 109 here still. Couple of questions one what does the perlite do? Second Travis can I plant potatoes in the fall and what's that potato company you use?? Thanks Travis how's the baby bet she's getting big?
Perlite helps with draining and keeps the soil from crusting over. You can plant potatoes in the fall, but you'll have to use potatoes from your spring harvest. I don't know of any companies selling seed potatoes right now. Essie is doing great and growing fast!
When to start planting watermelon seedlings
I'd say usually about 4-5 weeks before your average last frost date.
I tried to find the follow up video to this one but couldn't find it. What are your thoughts on the air prune trays? Thanks.
They're okay, but I don't like them as much as the Proptek trays.
@@LazyDogFarm I was just wondering if the air prune feature actually did anything or if they were more like a regular cell ?
@@kansasgardener5844 I can't tell it has any effect.
@@LazyDogFarm I might try a proptek tray. I usually don't use trays at all. I usually use the small square pots like you have but I might try one. Thanks.
Question... why are you thinking about planting the fall crop early? I am in 8a, and plan to start my fall plants inside in two or three weeks. Curiosity has me thinking... Thanks
The Arctic Blast last year got a lot of our stuff right before it matured. So I was thinking of getting a little earlier start just in case.
Sounds like a plan. I am too concerned about the heat into October.
Where did you get your greenhouse?
Atlas Greenhouses
Hi there I’m in East Texas it’s consistently 106 and Sunday will be 108
Do you think it’s too warm still
YES.
No not at all!
@@K_Hicks Sarcasm? I hope....
Only if the bath water is that warm
@@AnenLaylle7023 yes. Lol.

Not sure i live the green trays. Guess to each their own.
No, no, she's starting for me yet. Maybe e, the end of August 1st of September.
My seeds are coming up and the very tiny worms have already found them🤬
I am glad to see you trying the winstrip trays. I am going to purchase my seed starting trays and 1020 indestructible bottom trays from Neversink Tools later this fall (just not in the budget until then). From the research that I have done Conner at Neversink Tools bought the rights from the inventor of the winstrip trays Aart Van Wingerden and the seed trays do fit into regular 1020 trays. The trays from Neversink Tools are an investment but after having bought several products from Bootstrap Farmer I have decided to try Neversink Tools products in the hopes that they will actually be the last seed-starting products I will have to buy. While Bootstrap’s 1020 trays, seed starting pots, and trays are a step up from regular seed starting trays they are not in my opinion worth the money because mine did not hold up. I have several 1020 trays that I cannot bottom water from because they now leak after 3 years of use as a home gardener while some trays I received were cracked when I received them right out of the box.
The winstrip trays were actually invented to take the place of soil blocks that some market and home gardeners use due to their air pruning capabilities leading to stronger root systems for plants. I like to bottom water and use fine vermiculite on top of my seeds which is almost impossible to do without mold issues when using soil blocks so the air pruning capabilities of the winstrip trays really appeal to me.
Just to be honest I am not affiliated with either company just a home gardener who would like a product made to last and actually be the last seed-starting product I have to buy. I am interested to see how you like the winstrip trays over the regular trays. Below are links to 2 other TH-cam videos with more info about the winstrip trays.
