As a product of severe childhood neglect and physical abuse. It is NOT an excuse to be a horrible monster. I am almost 30 years old and have a daughter who's 8, I have never violently attacked or hurt anyone and never plan to. I hate when people use their past abuse as a reason to further continue that abuse. Disgusting.
Thank you for covering an Australian case, being an Aussie myself, it's not often we hear about our cases in international media formats. And also, Alice Springs is definitely as isolated as it seems. If your driving in that area, you're supposed to have days worth of supplies and petrol, and a satellite phone is recommended if you're not used to the harsh terrain.

This..... I've been severely physically abused by both of my parents since i was a kid and not once did j think of killing someone or hurting them in anyway, childhood trauma isnt an excuse to hurt ppl imo, nk5 to mention even people that i know who have it way worse never did either, he's a sick person and he deserves his sentence regardless of his past

I have been saying this for years and years! It makes me sick that ppl that have been abused use it as a reason/excuse/defense to be abusive (or worse) themselves! I was mentally, physically, emotionally and sexually abused from birth to age 18 by my bio father. My brother was abused as well--all but sexual abuse--and is now an abuser himself. He is physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive to pretty much any and everyone. He is also an alcoholic. He uses past abuse as an excuse as to why he is the way he is and it is infuriating! He is also very lonely....

My mum was like this always putting men first. My mum is also called Hazel. I am the oldest of 3 girls(I’ll be 26 in December). I’ve never met my birth dad but I’ve read court papers and he is a monster off what I’ve read and my mum isn’t much better. She never anted me I was just the mistake that came before my sisters(her words not mine) she would make sure this was brought up all the time.
I had a lot taken from me because of my “mum”. She forced me to call every guy dad that entered the house. I told her stuff when I was younger that she never believed she physically and mentally abused me as did her partners. Even now I live in a different city she still tries to do it over text she is a sick person.
I had a seriously bad childhood and growing up my life hasn’t been much better because people know I’m vulnerable they all think they can play mind games with me but being around the amount of abuse I have growing up and even now I know how to block people out as soon as they start.
I would never once hurt or even think of hurting a single person not even people who have hurt me and specially not my children. Having a bad childhood doesn’t make you a bad person. Being a bad person is something you chose.

At the same time, I wonder, how traumatic that accident was for her, losing her kids, her leg, & her "partner"/children's killer shows up to flaunt his new gf🤯
There's no justifying ANYTHING she did, but clearly losing your children at all, let alone so tragically& instantaneous, followed by further pain, seemed to REALLY twist her mind. There are some missing pieces which explains why it took 7 months for an official missing person report. Also, Colleen, Carlies Mum, kept trying to keep in contact with Carlie and such cruel things happened which made her believe she was ok years after. Communication wasn't all via txt. Yet this cruel stuff made her believe Carlie didn't care she had cancer. It took such a toll on her.
Hazel knew early on what Daniel did. Hazel has lied to pretend her involvement was much later on.
Hazel was also awarded over 1,300,000 for the deaths of her children after pressing charges against Daniel. So she bought herself a huge property in Queensland.

Then when they're released, they cant get a job nor rent an apartment because of their petty record so they end up committing bigger crimes in order to not die. Ive been told many commit crimes just so they dont die from homelessness. Prison is free food and bedding. Rehabilitate for long term results so we can't keep the major criminals where they belong. WORST of all, its insane how the police are ALLOWED to ignore domestic violence ,suspicious activity and skip or alter procedures

just coming back to this now months later, I covered this case in my criminology classes and my lecturer worked on this case. She believes wholeheartedly 2 things. 1) the suitcase was deeper in the bush and someone was too afraid to report it and moved it to the roadside so that the next person to find it would report it. 2) daniel's motive is actually candalyce, he had a lot of paraphilic and paedophilic tendencies that you hadn't mentioned ( I wont go into it) and the extended time period also suggests this and a sighting of him at a hotel with candles and not carly.

Exactly!!! This was my brother's wife -- who's still refusing to sign divorce papers. Even though she was constantly cheating & is on live in boyfriend #6 currently. She basically allowed her boyfriend to abuse my niece's & tried to just pretend it never happened. Even going so far as to say my niece was lying. Then she had the nerve to tell me I need to 'mind my own business'. Let's just say, I refused to do that & informed her of the consequences -- should she ever 'make another mistake'. The kids have been in therapy & they are doing well. J88t6I will *never* understand is the BS slap on the wrist he got. Still, I thank God, mother nature, the universe; every day that my eldest niece (9 at the time about to turn 15) confided in me or, who knows how far it could've gone. After I found out, I did some digging. This piece of excrementt has a pattern of abusing his partners little girls & finds women who allow it. The courts are basically allowing it & their mom faced no consequences. I'm a mom of a 28 year old daughter & have a grandson 18 months & granddaughter 2 months old. It breaks my soul that selfish evil b!tch put them through that - just to have a 'man'. My brother was always their primary caregiver, to the point where I refer to her as an incubator, not a mother.
I don't tell the kids that or bash her. It's beyond hard not to say anything. But, I will & do share with them anything they want to know -- age appropriately & approved by their therapist[s]. Thankfully, it wasn't too strange to them that they can't go to their mothers unsupervised. I'd prefer they not see her ever again.
Unfortunately, the judge disagreed & that's a whole other situation. The guy was charged & convicted. The problem with that is he only got 6 months in jail, only served 37 days & is on unsupervised probation for 3 years. Yet, someone with cannabis can get 10+ years -- while these predators walk free. I'm fighting to try & change that -- considering the lasting affect it has in these predators victims. I will *never* as long as I live -- stop being 'all in their business' & doing all I can to make sure they are safe physically and mentally.

The saddest part is, that she wasn't able to protect her daughter.. Imagine being killed and then your murderer picks up your child, and your child lives 4 days in hell, then gets murdered, with you unable to protect her, because you were killed first, until she joins you in the afterlife.. That's what got to me the most.. The fact that the poor babygirl was in the hands of a monster for 4 days, and her mother couldn't be there because she was the victim before her.. And the fact that there is a guy out there, that used to trust that monster, and therefor, unknowingly, sent an innocent little girl (he babysat on) in the "care" of a psychopath and a pedophile and than all this information came out years later.. Police at your door asking questions, explaining to you, the horror, why.. That man must be so depressed.. And he just didn't know back then.. How can someone get past this? It's too much.. Those thoughts broke me for a moment..

I love Danielle's content and her passion for making these videos however the content is really hard to digest, also difficult to accept that there are people out there so cruel, dark and broken. I watch them because I need to try to understand how people can be so vile and horrible to other human beings especially children. If then I watched these videos in the morning, it would really just darken my day more than it already is.

I was around when all this happened. I live in Canberra the ACT and have lived in Alice Springs. So - part of this problem was that he operated in different states. As you have already described, the states are so far away - they are not always co ordinated - its like different countries. The other thing was they discovered the suitcase before they found the guy.... they backtracked the clothes in the suitcase and there was a public appeal to find anyone who had seen a child with those clothes. Also, most sensible people DONT drive from Adelaide to Alice in one go with one driver. MOST sane people stop 1/2 way. There are lots of things about this case that could only happen in Australia like Joanna Lees. The outback is BIG.

What a tragic story - my heart goes out to the victims and family. I'm so glad justice was finally served and Daniel will spend the rest of his life in prison. I agree that Hazel is a despicable person but wanted to add that I don't blame the police for giving her immunity. Her testimony was critical and at the end of the day, Daniel getting convicted for the murders is more important than charging hazel for her involvement after the fact. Yes, Hazel is a terrible human being, but Daniel is extremely dangerous and would likely kill again IMO.

Thank you so so much for covering this case Danielle. More people in the world need to know the name of that monstrous pile of human garbage and what he did to those two beautiful girls, and their family.
I lived in Alice Springs for 10years and moved there in ‘07. Having grown up in Victoria, it was a massive culture shock. I still remember the first time I saw Carly and Candy in the Alice Plaza. I was 15 at the time and shocked to see this girl who looked like she was 13-14 pushing a stroller with an 18month old. Carly was maybe 5feet tall and had a petite/small build, I truly thought she was a few years younger than me, not older.
I went to school with her step brother, he loved his sister and niece soo much and it broke his heart when they were finally found. I can only hope it was for the best that Carly’s mum passed away from cancer before she found out what had happened…but it must have pained her so deeply to not get to spend her final moments with her only daughter and grandchild. The only consolation being that they are all together now. For a DECADE Carly’s remains were unidentified and she was nicknamed “Angel” due to the shirt she was found wearing.
I don’t believe Daniel ever cared for Carly, he was always after her daughter.
I’d like to mention that there is also somewhat of a “rule” when driving between Alice and the next big city (Adelaide or Darwin) and that is: “if an animal jumps out in front of your vehicle, DO NOT swerve, drive straight.” It’s not just Kangaroos thats out there, theres cattle and feral camels. The roads used to have any open speed limit, now I believe it is capped at 130km/h. It’s also a fairly flat sort of landscape, so I can’t help but wonder if the car accident that killed Hazels two kids was truly an accident…
