- I take out the newest Shimano flagship to get a feel for its casting abilities on the water with lures of all weight ranges.

I still have and use 4 of the original Shimano Calais 200 mg reels. They are still smooth and fuction perfectly 23 years or so after I got them. I do regular maintenance and cleaning/lube on them myself and besides upgrading the spool bearings, nothing has been replaced. These old girls were built like beautiful tanks! I have several of the newer antares and antares dc reels too. I like them too but I have my doubts about them lasting as long as the Calais have. Hope I am wrong about that.
I told you,I'm running mine with three brakes on and about 3/4 external dial.Just playing around I put it on my Zodias BFS rod and it was amazing,not going to keep it there but it's fun to see what it's capable of.
With the newer svs reels, I’ve found that keeping all 4 brakes on (sometimes 3) with a low dial setting is best for my purposes. You can still fling it out there but the spool stays nicely behaved. It’s actually the opposite with the older vbs reels. My 50e frame reels are perfectly happy with only 1 or 2 brakes on. The newer svs inf spools have a WIDE range of adjustability...and at that lower range of spool control lurks some mayhem if you’re not careful.

That’s what keeps me from purchasing this reel, WEIGHT. I try to keep my combos around 10 oz. I think the jdm metanium mgl is the best reel on the market & even if it loses, it’s the better value overall
This is the second 2019 Antares casting clip I've watched and I will say this, that MGL Spool III is legit. It really enables you to cast much farther.
What the different between monofilament and braid line? Did monofilament line can cast little bit far than braid?

I havent officially went fishing with it yet but the spool doesnt have a large capacity but It should easily handle over an ounce.

What action rod is that? If its a fast action your not really getting true potential if your looking for long casts. Throw it on a moderate-fast cranking rod and I bet it goes even further. Either way its a solid review of the reel. Nice job. Sweet reel.

I really need your help I just bought an Antares and was trying to put line on it turn the cast control knob in the Antares insert fell out how do I get this back in?
does anyone know if the old antares had at least a 90-100mm handle? I heard they came with only an 85mm? I saw that they came in a 5.1.1 gear ration and thought about getting it for deep diving crank baits?

Guys, just get it from Japan direct, US$419 with free shipping, same price as a Metanium MGL in the States. Is a no-brainer really if you don't mind the heavier weight of the reel.

I love my new Antares 70, but I do feel that the new Daiwa steez 700 is better for casting lighter lures. Also the steez being 5.3oz it's a nice light lure set up!
As well it should be, its got a tiny super light spool. The Steez CT is nice but not $700 nice by a long shot!
Daiwa is boo bo that's why their ballistic which was made to compete with the stradic ci4 has a big time price dip on ebay
MyTopSpinner Daiwa resale is absolute SHIT as well.. not only are they hard to sell but you have to take a huge loss to sell them

I really wish you wouldn’t be afraid to remove that plastic on the cork they have stuff you use for cork so they don’t split and mine are fine for a couple years now no cracks etc unless you love the feel of plastic good reel video like always though

THE REEL TEST gotcha I didn’t think of that I suppose that how much you buy that you would have to get rid of some of it
When you say its about 20-25 yards with 3/16 or 1/8 lures you make approx 20-22 hand retrieve turnovers. Bases on 7.4 HG ratio, 34 mm spool diam and 1-2 mm less line wounded we get approx 70 centimeters retrieve per turnover. This means there is NO 20-25 yards distance with these lures, but there is only 15-16 yards.

If I remember well,1r1r’s Antares dc break was no longer functional several years ago... I don’t think his son can still use it. But thanks again for your review, it saves about 550euros.

might be hard to eliminate side to side play but you don't want to eliminate it. that spool should really be completely free to get the most out of it. it just limits performance of general casting, pitching distance, skipping distance, everything.
Ill get a Steez SV TW later this year and we are going to have some proper battles

Didn't impress much . Yes, it is a great reel. But you can get Met MGL, Scorpion MGL, SLX MGL for much lower price and about the same performance.
I can blind myself for free thank you. Don’t need an expensive reel to do it for me 😂

I’ll stick with Spinning Reels, less possible chances of bird nesting and fussing with the reel while fishing. Just never liked bait casters.
