A visionary album of technical playing. Sick rhythmic divisions, 7 strings, wonderful sound, almost every song is amazing. For me it's as brilliant as e.g. Necrophagist - Epitaph, Death - Symbolic.

I got introduced to Mr. Jarzombek via Spastic Ink, and a few years following, I stumbled across this album at F.Y.E. It has a lot of the technical spice I enjoy, but so much more musicality and cohesion, altogether. Ron, Alex, and Charlie were a truly gifted trio, and this album highlights how incredible they are as individuals, as well as how fluid they were as bandmates, the latter of which many "supergroup" line-ups tend to lack. I always find myself going back and listening to this album. It only gets better with every listen.
I've been playing guitar since I was 6 (36 now!), and I remember when this album came out (I was also HEAVY into Planetary Duality, Sleep Terror, Decapitated, etc at the time); it was a revelation and completely informed the music I've listed to and written since. Still in the rotation to this day, makes me so happy to see you putting a spotlight on it here. Idk if you read the comments, but I also want to say that I really appreciate what you do, and how humble and real your content is. The comment section is maybe an awkward place to do this, but I also want to encourage you to be confident in how you talk about yourself, and lean on all these people, myself included, who get so much out of the content and the music you put out. I feel like most videos of your videos have some self-deprecating bits (I am NO STRANGER to those feelings, so I get it), and I know its impossible to just release those feelings sometimes, but I want to let you know that you are an amazing, and deeply appreciated person. I'm sure we'll never meet irl, but you absolutely have the type of spirit that I vibe with, and you are fucking awesome just how you are. Not just empty platitudes here, you're a sick musician. Thanks for what you're doing. Keep it up, bro.
I’m a simple man - I see Synaptic Plasticity and you have my attention. Fond memories of buying my first 7 in 2013 and immediately rushing home to learn that song.
I don't know if I like their main album or EP more. The fact that each song on the EP is a score that is in frame perfect sync with a movie and STILL sounds organic and groovy and maintain traditional song structure is like an insane musical puzzle.
I think it's amazing that you did this. He's been one of my favorite guitar players forever and ever. I think since I heard Control and Resistance. I feel like you must already know this, but he played on the first gordian knot album and there's a solo on this song called Rivers dancing that is one of the very few accessible, melodic solos I've heard him do and it's pretty fabulous. You, too, are fabulous. Merry Christmas! 🎄❤️🎄
It's my all time favorite album! I can play most of the songs on guitar, bass, some I can play on the drums. The first time I heard, it came as a total shocker because by that point I hadn't heard anything like it. I felt the same way for the longest time about discovering new things after the 50th, 100th, 150th listen "Bleeding In The Brain" is my all time favorite. The main riff being complex itself is enough, but the solo is unmatched. I still get goosebumps listening to it! I'm guessing you know this, but "The Near Domination of 4 against 5" is a song that was released, but not under The Machinations of Dementia. It's with Jarzombek & Adler before Charlie joined the band. Chris Adler demonstrated a demo version of the song in a Modern Drummer performance (2005 or 2007, I don't recall) along with a few other Blotted Science riffs.
Blotted Science are one of my faves. I call them Death Jazz because that's the best description I can think of because everything is death metal except no vocals and instead it's just the most complex death metal instrumentals possible.
I've also listened to this album an unhealthy amount of times, I'm so happy to hear you talk about it! I love it so so much and I can hear the influence in your band so much now that I think about it!!
These guys (Blotted Science) are awesome. I’ve been a fan of Ron’s work since Watchtower’s Control and Resistance came out. Solidified by the first Spastic Ink album. I ordered a bunch of Ron’s CDs from him in maybe the early 2000’s and received a nice email from him where he took time to answer some questions I had when placing the order including the future of Watchtower and his working with Marty Friedman. Anyway great to see Blotted Science get some love.
Decided to give them a quick listen as I had never heard of them… and you are correct: this first song is a fucking banger, dude! Can’t wait to listen to more.
DUDE!! THANK YOU for reminding me. I probably haven't listened to Blotted Science in years. I remember listening to this album constantly many years ago. Love this album, and glad to hear it getting some recognition. I'd actually love to hear what other albums have been like this for you. Always neat to hear the influences that make a musician.
I got into Ron's other aMAZEing work (Spastic Ink, Watchtower, his solo record, Gordian Knot) back in late 2003. When this record came out a few years later, I just about soiled myself with glee. Great topic for Christmas Day, since that album was essentially like Christmas! SIDE NOTE: he wrote the best guitar solo of all time on Gordian Knot's "Rivers Dancing". Listen to the last few minutes of that track before you die!
I've been jamming to A Wake in Providence's "I'll write to you My darling decay" on repeat for a while now. Such a good album. It's Something I'll always listen to.

Dude, those two albums are my favorite of all time. You're totally right about the repeat listens, I never get tired of these, so much to chew on here.
Fun fact… Jarzombeck wrote various riffs by using a number system based off randomly picking numbers in a phone book I’ve been relentlessly spinning both their records since day one. So damn good and the tone he has on his 7 string is outstanding along side alex websters basswork.
