  • A new chapter with a new semi-trailer project! This overview tour gives you a sneak peek at progress to date of the second half of our semi-trailer tiny home. Mike discusses what we've completed and future plans to come for this guest space, storage area and fancy bathtub room :)
Years in the making, we (Heidi and Mike) researched, discussed and changed our lifestyle in preparation to "go tiny". -- Please follow our journey from humble beginnings in a tent through to our final grand tiny house build in our ex-refrigerated semi-trailer.
BACKGROUND: With no building experience, we ventured into the dark and fronted every challenge including difficult weather, budget constraints, minimising our lifestyle, needing to learn a mountain of new trades, a pandemic and much more.
If you are keen to see the entire experience of the original semi-trailer build, check out "the semi-trailer project" and begin with Episode 1 to find out about our early challenges and innovations. If you’d like to jump straight into the tiny house building, that begins at Episode 6.
Following on from the build, we will be releasing regular content that discusses minimalist living in greater detail, shows some of the features of our house plus talks about helpful considerations for building in a semi-trailer as a home. We’ll also be connecting with friends who live this way, talk about legalities, discuss the perks of tiny house living and more as the channel grows.

I never knew they were sips but makes sense now. What kind of foam is it? Does it smell? Air quality. I have purchased a 53 ft reefer going to convert to home for family of 5.

That's cool that you are going to be building in a reefer too. Will you be documenting your build? Yeah the SIPs are done in a factory using a dense spray foam injected between fibreglass layers. So in terms of volatile compounds (VOCs) and off-gassing, the foam is trapped within the fibreglass and doesn't affect the build unless you leave sections of fibreglass wall exposed, which you wouldn't do. Even so, after decades of use, the off-gassing will have occurred long ago. Some interesting reefer info I found here: www.truckinginfo.com/151085/baby-its-cold-inside-specing-reefer-trailers
There is no smell and the only time you have much to do with the insulation is when you cut into it. Good luck!

So, you were living in the trailer without any kind of insulation and such? If so, how did you make that work?

The semi-trailers both had built-in insulation in their SIP (Structurally insulated panel) construction. In the main house (P1), we raised the floor slightly and added new floor insulation and then with the drop-ceiling being SIPs as well, they added insulation to the roof. In P2 though, to keep it simple and cheaper, I didn't do anything extra with floor or ceiling. If you're thinking of building in a semi-trailer body, I would definitely recommend not using anything other than an ex-refrigerated one as not only are they insulated but a much more rigid body too
