  • A wonderful little walk, barely over 2 miles, from High Close Youth Hostel to the summit of Silver Howe, which overlooks both Grasmere and Elterwater and has stunning 360 degree views of the Lakeland mountains, as well as 6 lakes. The walk takes in Huntingstile Crag and Dow Bank and features views of Megs Gill, Rydal Water, Loughrigg, Wansfell Pike, Fairfield, the Langdale Fells and more.

    Thank you for this wonderful video, it brought back lovely memories of 45 years ago when my wife and myself together with our two daughters did this walk from Elterwater Common. We also were blessed with a beautiful day and enjoyed a picnic on the summit. Have often recommended this walk as an introduction to relatives and friends visiting the Lakes for the first time. A little bit of heaven!!

      Thank you. I'm pleased you enjoyed it and that it triggered those memories. I think one of the best things about this, and many other Lake District walks, is that it will have hardly changed in the 45 years since the day of your picnic. I bit of erosion here and there, which is to be expected, but basically the same views from the same position. As you rightly say, a little bit of heaven.

    Can't tell you how pleased I was to come across this. Sadly unable traverse the route myself but often the time, and over decades, I've gazed upon Silver Howe from Grasmere and pondered what a wondrous view it must be... I now know for sure what had to be true. Thank you!

      Thank you. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. One of the reasons that I started doing videos was to give those who, for whatever reason, could not get up the fells, an opportunity to see the views from the fell tops.

    Brilliant video of this walk. So well edited. I did a similar walk a couple of weeks ago and came down Meg's Gill. I wish I'd seen this first to confirm that there was an easier way down to High Close. Thanks for sharing...because you have given me a way to share some of my own experience with others. Looking forward to my next visit to Great Langdale.

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. That ridge is lovely, and that route either up or down Silver Howe is probably the easiest of all those available. I was up by Meg's Gill a week ago. Unfortunately, the recent dry weather has starved it of water and it looked very sorry for itself. Hopefully there should be rain later this week. I find it a very enjoyable path down, but much prefer the ridge. If you are shooting a video or two, I look forward to seeing them. Enjoy Langdale.

    My Dad and I did this walk on Sun 15th September - another great walk from Eric slightly ‘off the beaten track’ that I wouldn’t have done without this video. Well worth the effort - the top itself is indeed unremarkable but the views certainly aren’t!! Thoroughly recommended. 👍

      jonathancraigguides we parked at the YHA and did ‘your’ walk - very enjoyable. We then dropped down into Grasmere, had lunch and walked along to the opposite end of Grasmere alongside the water. Only pain was a very steep walk up next to a wall through the forest to get back to the car. Steeper than I thought it would be!!

      @jonathancraigguides  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garysmith6894 I hope you didn't miss out on going along the terrace. If you do that route again, walk along the shore until you reach a bridge, then turn right onto a path up the fell. • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your honesty Clive, it is very much appreciated. I have to admit to being undecided myself about the music. I'm quite conservative in my tastes and have used classical music previously, whereas this track is a bit more modern (I'm told they call it techno), but I like to experiment a little and a lot of younger folk seem to like it. I'll be reviewing the overall response in a few days to get a better picture of how it went down, so it may be back to Beethoven next time round.

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly helps add to the mood. I try to fit the music to the subject but was a bit stumped with this one, and someone suggested this track. I'd seen it on another video and it seemed to work, so it was in for a penny, in for a pound really.

      Thank you. That is very much appreciated. I can confirm that, barring accidents I shall be on the fells in May, as it is probably the month when I do more walking than any other, since we have longer daylight hours, and the weather is usually dry (ish) and warm. @@jonathancraigguides I didn't know you wrote books Jonathan. I assumed your guides were just video ones. Why don't you put a link to them after the description of your videos?

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SirPrancelot1 I originally wrote a series of guides for local hoteliers to sell (or give) to their guests. The walks in them were actually from the door of the hotel concerned, so no need to drive to a start point, the idea being that you could visit a hotel for a 5 day stay, park up and not bother with the car again until it was time to go home. Publication of these ceased in 2019. There were generic versions available through an online portal. These also ceased at the same time, mainly due to contractual reasons. Some participating hotels may have residual copies left, since for much of 2020 any that they had will not have been able to be sold/lent out. There are no plans to continue with publication after the pandemic, however, I am currently working on a new book based around my videos. This will not be available before 2022, and as publishing details have yet to be finalised I cannot, at this point, offer any further information.

    • @SirPrancelot1
      @SirPrancelot1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonathancraigguides Great idea, not needing to use the car once parked at the hotel. I'm sure they were of great benefit to many people. Good luck with the book. Glad to hear you should be back on the fells in May.

      @jonathancraigguides  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. First of all, it is a super walk, and the way I did it on the video is longer, but easier, as once you are on the ridge it is a relatively easy route. The paths up from Grasmere are steep, but the walk is shorter. As for the couple in the video, they were charming. They are actually subscribers, and recognised me on the fell, so came over to introduce themselves. I think it made a lovely end to the video.

      Be sure to say hello if you do. A few weeks ago I went up to Far Sawrey, returning via Claife Heights. A man was coming the other way. He looked at me, I said hello, we passed, he said nothing. Later on we met again near the ferry, I said hello, he said nothing. A day later a hotelier rang me to say that one of her guests had seen me, twice, on a walk. The guest had recognised me from the video of the same walk, which he was doing because he had seen the video. He'd told the hotel owner, a lady I know well, but had not said anything to me. He'd asked the hotelier to pass on his greetings. A shame really. I'd have loved a chat.

      @jonathancraigguides  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Sharon. I hope you enjoy doing the walks as much as you like watching them. With regards to my experience, I have been walking in the Lake District since 1970, and like to get out on the fells at least twice a week. That's a lot of miles over the years. I can honestly say that I have never really been lost, because I learned map reading when I was a child and always have an Ordnance Survey map with me.

  • @billpatten8722
    @billpatten8722 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    My map says it's Silver How.

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for mentioning this. It brings to life a subject that has long caused debate in fell walking circles over the years, namely the name and actual spelling of fells in the district. Wainwright also calls it Silver How. Harveys maps use Howe. The Langdale and Ambleside mountain rescue team use the Harveys Maps quite widely, and those maps often use different spellings of the same word. In some cases, they disagree with Ordnance Survey over the exact position of some points of interest, the most common one being Todd Crag, overlooking Windermere. With regard to Howe, or How, both mean the same thing, ie: a local word in northern England for a hill or hillock, (amongst other things). Both spellings are deemed correct, however, the etymology of the word shows that the version with the 'e' at the end is older and, nowadays, much less common than the more modern version without an 'e'.
