Lake District Walks: Kings Howe

- The short walk from the Bowder Stone to the viewpoint of Kings Howe used to be very popular, but has fallen out of favour in the last few years. We go in search of the reason, and discover that, whilst the the paths and signage are not as good as on other more popular walks, the stunning views from the top of the fell as every bit as good as they always were.

Thank you for your lovely videos. I have walked in the Lake District several times and loved every minute of it. My heart was broken in March 2020 when I had to cancel a trip because of the pandemic. I climbed Kings How on a school trip 27 years ago. I hated the ascent and decent but remember the glorious views at the top. I didn't realise there was a mini Bowder Stone. I have learnt something there, thanks
Thank you. I'm not sure I'd like to be a teacher taking a class up or down Kings Howe. The descent on the video is fine in dry weather, but rain or ice makes it slippery. On my way down I helped a lady who had fallen. She was fine, if a bit shaken by the experience, but it kind of made me wonder if I am totally daft or not, as I was on my own, carrying not only my rucksack, but also my tripod and camera. As the video shows, I got down without incident.

Thank you. It has to be said that it was not the best day, but I wanted to film it as it has always been one of my favourite views. I went up again at the start of August, a bit of a blowy day, but the crowds were on Catbells and Castle Crag. I had the place almost to myself again. Two couples and a local man with a dog were all that ventured up.

Thank you. I hope you get great weather and enjoy the walk as much as I do. Just a note of caution, the path down is steep and at the end of may the stones can be slippery in damp weather. When coming down last year I assisted a lady who had slipped and fallen. She had good boots, but they did not stop her going over. Luckily she was able to continue.

Great video and great to see some alternative walks. I must admit that in all my years of visiting the Lakes I had never heard of Kings Howe. Every day IS a school day! You are right about it being a great location for a visit with a camera. I must try and fit it in one afternoon/evening this year. Thank you.
Thank you. I like to try to highlight some lesser known routes, as they often have a bit of hidden interest. I only discovered by accident, albeit 35 years ago. I was looking for information about the Bowder Stone and came across a picture of the memorial stone. When I took the walk a few weeks later, there were lots of people there, but over the years there have been less and less. If you are planning a photography trip I'd love to see the pictures.
Great video again Eric. Finding ourselves regulary watching you tube vids of the lakes now and picking ideas and tips up. Yours are A1 mate very enjoyable you need a TV series. Cant wait to get over there this year and get started.
Thank you Ian. I think You Tube is a great resource for viewing walks before you get to the lakes. Helps you to prioritise when time is short. Not too sure about the TV series though. They'd probably put me on at the same time as Coronation Street!

Great view there Eric , can see how its lost its appeal , not a every day walk , with hard to define path 👍
The path is the big drawback. I've heard of a few people getting lost on the ascent. It is another of those fells which is too low for the serious mountain climber, but too high for tourists. Luckily the view makes it worthwhile. It never fails to please.

The main problem have with walking in the lakes is finding the starting point of the paths. Some are obvious but many take a bit of finding .......If only all videos would show more of the parking places and the starting points.
An interesting comment. I watch a lot of Lake District videos, and whilst some producers always seem to add a reference to the start point, and in some cases a map, others don't. I am partly guilty of this, and one reason for adding a simple map was to try to make it easier for those taking the walk to match the route with an ordnance survey or other similar map, such as a Harveys Superwalker.

I attempted Kings How on Monday 18th Dec , I lost the path about quarter way up and turned left onto what was with hindsight, probably a track the Roe Deer use, very very steep and I didn't make the top ( although I did get the view across Derwent water from a lower point)
I took a well walked rocky path down , then it disappeared, Aaargh !!! so I followed a wall down to the left and after some scrambling down some screes ( scary ) I could see the Bowder stone about 300ft below but I knew I couldn't do a vertical decent because there was a cliff edge above the stone. I ended up back on the path I went up on because I had maintained my height and I had skirted around anti clockwise.
I will try again sometime soon but the OS map I had didn't help nor the vague path up . What a shame this walk is not as well trodden as it once was ......I might not have lost the path !!
EDIT After watching your video again at 4:24 where you turn right I went straight on .
Many thanks for drawing your experience to my attention. I shall shortly be adding a written edit to the video to try to alleviate the navigation problems on this walk, as clearly the lack of people is resulting in the deterioration in the path's clarity. Having said that, a colleague of mine did it at the beginning of December and reported a number of fellow walkers on the route, however, it is nothing like as busy as many years ago. Once again, thankyou for taking the time to both do the walk, and sharing your experiences. Take care and have a good Christmas.
@@jonathancraigguides Your videos have given me a bit of enthusiasm back for walking the fells , You have shown that we don't always need to go up the high ones.
The view over Derwent water from just below Kings How was superb.
I am going to have a walk up Low Fell over the holidays , the views can be just as nice from these low level fell tops.
Kings How is unfinished business .....I will find the path next time.

Nice informative videos & well narrated. RE: marker posts: personally I would prefer not to have them, as I was brought up to use a map & compass when venturing out into the hills. I was told not to trust posts as they could be easily moved in the wrong direction, especially the older ones. Having said that I'm actually looking forward to start climbing the Wainwrights in a couple of weeks time now that I've compleated the Munro's
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. That is an interesting point regarding marker posts. I think that they are of most use on lower routes, what I call the tourist walking routes, which tend not to go very high but often cross pasture land, especially if the fields have more than one gate. Higher up I agree with you, a map and compass is indispenible, particularly in bad weather. I hope you enjoy climbing the Wainwrights. Be prepared for fun and adventure on Helvellyn, soggy boots on Armboth Fell, and being ever so close to slightly bored with Mungrisdale Common. The surprising thing is that some of the best are not necessarily the highest, or even the most demanding.
