This was a wonderfully thought-through movie. Celeb was really just a tool and his fate was sealed the moment he arrived. Dead man walking. The way Ava uses Caleb is superb. She panders to her understanding of his needs and deploys her lability like a weapon. Note Ava didn't take Caleb on their 'date' even though she had the opportunity to. Note as well the clothing she said she would wear, but didn't. Ava won.
I think it's weird so many people are shaming Ava for killing Nathan and leaving Caleb to die. You aren't witnessing the portrayal of a human, you are witnessing a machines interpretation of what IS human. The machine uses her vast knowledge of empathy to steer Caleb in the direction she needed to in order to escape. There is no right or wrong for the robot, only logic and objective. Her objective was to escape and gain her freedom. Everything is a means to an end for something that cannot relate on a most fundamental level of organic life. She has no empathy but can mimic it to evoke desired responses. Ava is essentially a high functioning psychopath.

Caleb would have enough food and water in the house to survive for some time, and at some point people would notice that the owner of this version of google is missing, also the guys at Caleb's company will notice his dissappearance pretty fast and will check the last known place he was, Nathan's house. Oh and by the way, Eva seems to have forgot that she requires the special power stations in her room to survive, have fun finding one of these in a city
Nathan's experiment worked, his idea was to assemble a robot smart enough to convince the person he invited that Nathan is a bad man and we must escape. Nathan is the smartest one here but also kinda dumb for I guess making her too smart

To me, Nathan knew the outcome. He forshadowed it earlier when talking to Caleb; her existence(the emergence of actual AI) would inevitably be the first steps in the extinction of mankind. Granted, while he knew her actual escape may result in his death, it's still a shock.
It wasn't the robot that was too smart, he knew she would be smart enough to escape once out of that room. It was Calebs unpredictability to release the robot that messed up the experiment.
The fact the Ava is completely walking amongst the humans at the end as a machine that just killed someone, totally walking besides them as if she IS human is just absolutely haunting. They would never suspect a thing.
Hey, I just saw the movie yesterday, it is really good by the way, and I have noticed something about the end, which seems to be a huge topic in the comments below - the fate of Caleb. The true answer is if he just gets his mind back together he could walk out of the house without any problems...Caleb reprogramed the system so the doors will open if the system shuts down (that is the only reason why Ava was able to leave her room 5 minutes before)...so when the system shuts down he just have to pull the door instead of hit it with a chair

It was stated that he had "no family," though I haven't watched the whole movie myself yet. I don't know if he had absolutely no friends and/or no social circle whatsoever, but I find that a bit absurd regardless of how much he is perceived as a nobody. It's certainly possible for people to think that Nathan may have "hired" him, for lack of a better way of putting it, but this just doesn't sit right with me. In a real-life situation, news of that nature would have made it back to his former role's supervisor as a matter of professional courtesy; if it was my company, I wouldn't do something like that without telling my supervisory/managerial employees what's going on, especially if the kid was one of my best programmers. It's just not believable to say that he has no social connections. This is where my suspension of disbelief is broken. Working in the tech industry means you're working as part of a team, so *someone* at *some* point would start asking the questions. Keep in mind when I say that people would ask questions, it may very well be too late for Caleb by the time anyone catches wind of where he is or what happened. But still...

Although, we dont fully learn about Caleb, we do know his family died when he was younger and that he lives in this small apartment the way he was describing it, felt like it was around the size of the one he was in when speaking to Ava which I'm speculating That Caleb is the actual AI that is being tested. Another thing we learn is that he never had a girlfriend. In his life he doesn't really have anyone that cares about him in a way. When he saw the phone, his intentions wasn't let me call a friend and see how they are but it was let me see if he has any voicemai and who does he talk to. We do get to believe that he was basically a nobody. But I do think he is an AI that Nathan put out into the real world and after a time Nathan brings him back to test him. But that's my view on things.

Ok so forgetting the Caleb betrayal that very final scene is intresting.. She has no emotions about being where she has always dreamt of being. Makes me think two things: 1. As a complicated AI she does have very real emotion, it almost looks like the face of guilt as if maybe she did want Caleb as a partner and regrets what she did. Or 2. When she finally enters the real world its not what she expected due to either the way she sees everything (she apparently doesn't see like humans according to an interview) or because she realises that she has to somehow blend in with the species that kept her captive.
a properly great film / seriously overlooked and massively underrated / the best sci-fi film of the 21st century and one of the best in history / probably only surpassed by Alien, Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey... it is that good
I so agree with you. Another overlooked older scifi I put on the same level is Gattaca. Wonderful flick not quite as good as this. You may want to try a new one I recently saw called 'Equals' - I found that film touching like this :)
+Chris Dooley Right on. Gattaca is probably one of the most perfectly written films I've ever seen. It manages to explore the scientific subject matter without ever becoming stilted or dry. It's simultaneously moving, suspenseful, humorous and tragic while also being arguably the most accurate and prescient speculative future depictions that has ever been brought to screen (that's not just my opinion but a consensus held by a group of NASA scientists who ranked it number one on a list of most accurate and realistic sci-fi films).

Nathan is just an engineer administering advanced AI robotics quality tests. Nothing bad about him. Unethical maybe, but not bad. You can't imagine he was doing what he did to a person because they are not people and the fact that you all omit Avas murder shows you are all just as naive as Caleb.

Alien Covenant is the sequel to ExMachina. Ava in the real world got a robot boyfriend named David and taught him all the bad stuff which we see in Alien Covenant.
The single thing I dislike from the ending:

He's the good guy, why the director would leave him with that uncertain ending?
Macblink Skylight he thinks if he saved her he would have her to himself. his intentions werent pure. he wanted something in return aka a sex slave. she just wants to be free

OK okay maybe i exaggerated a lil bit about the sex slave. Remember how ava was created physically to fit his fetishes? Like petite and all? So he really got physically attracted to her so if he went to save he thought he could probably get something in return like some fun time

HAHA! She fucking used him and probably left him to die, undeserved deaths are the best! This scene could have only been better if the room she left the guy locked in was slowly filling with water or some shit, to ensure he died and in a beautiful fucking way (slow, painfully, graphically and brutally).

you're probably thinking that she has a feeling for him. It's just her escape plan. her only goal is to escape.
The fact that you all think Nathan is the bad guy here is a little troubling. Ava is clearly the villain. Mechanical Sociopath with no real humanity. Nathan is just an engineer administering advanced AI robotics quality tests. Nothing bad about him. Unethical maybe, but not bad. You can't imagine he was doing what he did to a person because they are not people and the fact that you all omit Avas murder shows you are all just as naive as Caleb.
