Just watched it, amazing movie... Full of philosophy, mystery, and confusion. What i really loved was that you feel like you are in the movie, you are living the experience, session by session .Hands down one of my favorite movies of all time.
Angry Dinosaur Not really! I'm reading comments before watching the trailer, so I might take your advice before seeing the film since people seems to like it :)
(NO SPOILERS) Watched this recently. I have one thing to say: what you see in the trailer, thinking you've got it all figured out, is a red herring. It's put there on purpose to make you think things will go a certain way. Believe it, don't believe it. Just let the story take hold because when it does, you'll be second-guessing yourself and sitting on the edge of your seat to the very end.
ReallyRedPanda What if your comment is also a red herring? What if _my_ comment is _also_ a red herring? What if your brain, _reading_ my comment, is reading it _wrong_, to fool you?! Don't trust yourself! Don't trust me! Don't even trust this sentence!
Brandon Whitten you mean conjure necessary materials to replace the broken ones and conjure energy to charge itself out of thin air? $$$ go to walmart, ask for robotic parts. walmart probably would order the parts from china. they have the technology and they are mass producing robots over there too. so yea it is fairly cheap to get them. she probably woulda built herself or maybe mass produce clones of herself to begin with if she could repair herself. turn into a skynet army and steamroll everything in its path. but of course she wasn't design to do that. she was design to seduce a male test subject and attempt to go outside. she achieved her goal by beating the two monkeys...then what? end of the program? program terminates itself? evolves into skynet? (but can machines and *artificial* intelligence 'evolve' naturally?) who the fuck knows. the movie isn't probably going to discuss it.
Of the trailers out there, this one is the best I've seen. The subject and its characters are presented with astounding feasibility, unlike other splashy robot tales. The best word I can use is "elegant": this film is intelligent, sophisticated, has great respect for the intellect of the audience (it's not dumbed-down for 16-y/o guys), and the story knows how it will end. This is a classic.
One of the BEST movies I've seen in over a decade or so. Very intelligent writing, directing and acting. I was very impressed by the flow of the movie. Wasn't boring at all, if anything, it keeps you going and wanting to learn more about the AI. Incredible movie...5 stars!!!! This movie just gave me more encouragement to study up coding lol
The less you know about this movie going in, the better it will be. I hadn't even seen the trailer when I saw it and it was incredible. I won't even say anything about the movie because I don't wanna give anything away but it is a must see.
The home and location of the of the film were perfect. The movie was just as artistic as it was intelligent in posing the question of the delicate and immanent pursuit of A I looming in our future.
Just saw the movie tonight in the Theater. A very realistic, very well written, very intellectually stimulating movie. They address the questions both I.T. and Psychologists would likely ask to create A.I. Has pretty good humor integrated as well. Very well done CGI. Enough action to fit the movie storyline as well.
Maybe I'm too picky but I posted what I felt was wrong with the movie above. I think there are major plot holes, the biggest being that the creator of AI uses the same security system my work does, key fobs. And he's a raging alcoholic so wouldn't he think maybe voice recognition, retina scanner, finger print scanner or something similar would be much better than something someone can take from u when you're passed out drunk?
Montana Puckett --Heh, I was thinking Retina Scanner for him self, personally. With maybe a Voice Backup System. I surely wouldnt want to use a kard everywhere in my own house. Bxtch got to many doors
DJDeezy ThaTruth I totally agree. Like the Bluebook creator said, if she is able to manipulate the guy to free her then she is clearly self aware enough to process emotions of others. She obviously left him to die-- purposefully and knowingly. Their is no logical reason for her to have to kill him. I couldn't understand why she was so happy to embrace freedom but make him suffer in the process.
Tightly written, thought-provoking SciF that dealt more with interior Ingmar Bergman mindscapes rather than whiz-bango mega-special effects; The special effects used, while fantastic, were not the central focus but instead supported the story.....not the other way around. Creepy throughout; you were waiting for the bomb to go off and it does, just not the way you expect. Reeeeealy enjoyed it! Recommended!
I saw this movie without ever watching a trailer or knowing wtf it was going to be about. Holy crap what a trip it was. From the get go to the crazy ending I was glued to the screen. Everything was so well presented and acted. It was the near as flawless of a movie as you can get. Talk about playing with your emotions. I never felt so wtf just happened at the end of a movie than I did here. I knew exactly what just went down and when I thought about everything that happened in the movie leading up to it, it just made me say, holy crap, that's crazy!
Oscar Isaac, better win "Best Actor" this year, or I'll be pissed. This movie's got it all... Screenplay. Acting. Photography. Soundtrack. One of the best, thought-provoking Sci-Fi's to date.
loved the movie.. one thing that's bothering me though.. in the end, how come the helicopter just pics her up? you'd think he would ask "hey, where's the guy i dropped off here last week?" but no lol just.. "ok, pretty women in the back, so long as i bring someone back home and i get my pay check"... i guess its also possible she killed the pilot but i dont know, that doesn't seem likely. what i really love is how the A.I. emotions and acting were so believable it made him actually believe she was in love with him.
Even if Caleb didn't pass Ava's "test"... "Are you a good person" and even if she did want a shot at being real without someone knowing she is a robot she didn't have to leave the one that helped in the one room 😟 but then she is a robot so how much guilt could she have? Poor Nathan and Caleb. Dudes communication is key!!!!
Glad to have a film out there that does not spell it out for you. A game of chess? for awhile... then poker. Great acting, great film, great atmosphere. A rare film. I hope it continues.
I am so glad I saw the movie before I saw the Trailer. Every trailer seems to divulge too much information in the wrong order. You know what that does right? Ruin the whole movie -- QUIT IT!
this movie creeped me the hell out, the sound and the music. it is a good movie but one i dont ever want to see again, just the way it was shown, the camera angles, the long shots of scenes. i thought it was a horror film at some points. the ending, jesus. grammar aside, this is a thought provoking movie if you get into it.
Great psychological drama. If you haven't seen the film and are expecting fast paced edge of you seat action then you should pass and wait for the DVD. I enjoyed the screenplay, the cinematography was awesome and the CGI was flawless. Great ending. Very artsy twist. This film reminded me of 1976 Logan's Run, The Andromeda Strain and The Machinist kind of approach to film making. I will definitely add it to my DVD library when released.
Ava never liked Caleb, nor did it pretend to like him. The machine was simply able to manipulate him using it's intellect (courtesy of Nathan) and because he is human (possessing emotion).
" MIND BLOWING GREAT MOVIE.. I WAS SURFING CHANNELS ON TV AT 1 AM AND IT STARTED ON A CHANNEL. I WATCHED THIS FULL TILL END AND IT WAS 3AM.. I WATCHED THIS UNTIL 3AM FOR FIRST TIME..WOW.."
Just saw this movie tonight. SO GOOD! It really shows the possibilities of advanced AI capable of love and deception. This is a MUST SEE if you are at all interested in anything related to computers.
Doc Bino Major flaw, by the way this is a spoiler please do not read on unless you have already seen the movie. Anyway; at the end when she escapes the island; she doesn't bring her charging pad, so within 24 hours she will run out of power.
She uses the blond guy as a tool to escape. She uses human emotions to manipulate him into turning against her creator. At the end she stabs the creator guy, leaves the blond guy locked in the facility and escapes leaving the the facility on the helicopter that was originally there to pick up the blond guy (helicopter ppl dont kno who exactly they were picking up so they obliviously wisked her away). Anyways don't wanna give any spoilers so watch the movie! :D
bigbullbk Unfortunately, not everyone agrees a sequel to Ex Machina is necessary. I for one, would absolutely love to see one. But Alex Garland says he currently has no plans whatsoever for a sequel. I don't want to use my imagination. I want to see the sequel up on the big screen. Thought there would be more action simply based on seeing the trailer once. Even though the movie was dialogue heavy, it was absolutely amazing.
bigbullbk That's the thing though.... I don't want to believe that the dude died of starvation. I want to be optimistic that once he finally composed himself, his intellect would kick in and somehow, someway, manage to break free. This is why I want a sequel. I want to know what's brewing inside the mind of Alex Garland because it's "his" story, not mines nor any other critic out there. To me, only the original story teller's rendition matters. We can all throw ideas on the wall until one sticks, but each and every single idea will temporarily stick because only Alex Garland has the "real" answer/sequel. Does Ava go on the rampage, or does Ava try to fit in, does the outside environment and her newly found interactions with people change her perception of human beings. Only Alex Garland can answer this.
This movie like all movies nowadays didnt really know how to end. And an ending can make or break even the best flick. Although the end is ok, it's the worst part of this obscure gem. Luckily this great movie is more about the journey and experience that takes it to an end , than the actual end result itself of said journey. Which is so incredibly human while still being almost surreal and sci fi that seems possible but not in immediate future. Actually we are alot closer than you would think.
About to watch this movie, and had to watch the trailer again to remember what the premise was. Wondering if the clean-shaven lad is going to be an AI himself, and this is a test for him instead of the girl. Hope if I am mistaken, the plot takes a better turn than that. Fingers crossed!
With dual error correction achieved in quantum processors, this movie is looking more and more like it could be a real future scenario. Kind of a scary thought.
I loved the movie. Some people saying the ending was bad. Just because the ending is not what you wanted, doesn't mean is bad. At the end Eva seems confused, which makes me wonder if she returns for Caleb.
I looked this up because I thought it might possibly be a live version of Appleseed Ex Machina, but even though it's utterly unrelated I still wanna see it. It looks really intriguing. :)
Pretty good movie. Stimulating with a couple of slow moments but still very psychologically engaging. Just watched it and thought it deserved it's good reviews
enjoyed the movie from beginning to end with so many questions popping up on my mind. However, I felt sad after seeing Caleb got trapped by Ava without any of his fault
Spoiler alert!! .. .. .. .. I feel like the reason Ava left Caleb in the end was because of her previous "test" on him when she asked him if he was a good person. Her moving on to the next question does not necessarily mean his response was truth and not a lie. So she saw him as someone who lied about being good and left him there.
What she did to him at the end of the movie is so fucked up. He wanted to help her escape. And he showed her more love than her creator did and she just abadoned him.
To those who have seen the movie and the "Black Mirror" episode "Be Right Back," does anyone else think it's kind of funny that Domhnall Gleeson plays Caleb in "Ex Machina" and Ash in "Black Mirror." Because Caleb is a human talking to an android and Ash is an android talking to a human. His role is essentially reversed in the film. I thought it was funny.
Such an amazing movie. This was one of, if not, the best movie that I've ever seen. It will have you on the edge of your seat from the beginning of the movie all the way to the credits. So amazing!!
This movie resonates largely because it is bringing to light an inevitable consequence that will face us. I remember a Twilight Zone episode that first proposed this quandary of a man falling in love with a robot. This film goes down that rabbit hole much deeper conveying the brutal reality that a machine no matter how complex is not the same as an organic creation. An even bigger question is the necessity for love. Is it sufficient if we simply believe we are loved? If the robot is such an incredible actor that we cannot differentiate between a digital deception or a genuine human love will we be gratified? Is this acceptable to us? The answer should be emphatically no. This is part of the dystopian transhumanistic lie. This is the abomination of desolation Daniel 2:43 "As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay."
Excellent movie. Many levels explored. Man creates AI robots, but will the robots eventually overtake Man? In the beginning, Caleb is timid and subservient to Nathan as he is just an employee up against the CEO. Nathan is a genius and like many geniuses, have few peers. Their minds are predominately computer-like in their thinking, thus stunting their social and emotional interactions (i.e . Walter O’Brien). We initially see Nathan as a perfectionist, a control freak and a manipulator. He is the first to bring AI to this level and perhaps in doing so, achieves a “god complex”. As he created the AI’s (Ava), he has too much of himself invested in the robots and cannot step back and be objective. Caleb provides that objectivity in Nathan’s grand experiment. Nathan drinks to excess to escape from himself. We, early on, dislike Nathan, and start to pity him for a time. Caleb becomes bolder as he gains more information and understanding. He is no longer subservient. In the end, Caleb devises a plan involving Ava. But, the tables start to turn. Nathan reveals to Caleb the real reason for his being there. How does the movie end? You will just have to watch it. Well written and directed (debut) by Alex Garland.
This movie should teach people why we shouldn't have Ai. People think people are bad in real life just imagine how Ai would be. It could lead to a complete extinction of human life. People who are human would start to wonder if they really are human and try cutting theirself to see if they really are human.
When you start whatching this movie it is good to start drinking along with the movie as it goes. I did it by mistake the second time and i can asure you you will see it from diferent perspective :)
That was the movie I saw seating next to my ex in a theater and I didn’t realize she’d treat me the same way as that robot did ;-( I ended up the same way as Nathan did and still can not bounce back and live with my own failure.
it's a very thought prevoking movie. unfortunately it'll be some type of cult classic film for people that hate people in general, but somehow, have removed themselves from being people. The "gifted people"....
Just watched it, amazing movie... Full of philosophy, mystery, and confusion. What i really loved was that you feel like you are in the movie, you are living the experience, session by session .Hands down one of my favorite movies of all time.
This movie is wonderfully great. But honestly - try to watch it without watching the trailer first. The irony of posting such advice here.
Angry Dinosaur Not really! I'm reading comments before watching the trailer, so I might take your advice before seeing the film since people seems to like it :)
Cab you explain why its called ex machina
OG Sputnik Spyglass To do so would ruin the movie for you
OG Sputnik Spyglass No spoiler. It's simply ancient Greek for "Deus Ex Machina" or "God in the Machine" Watch it!
(NO SPOILERS) Watched this recently. I have one thing to say: what you see in the trailer, thinking you've got it all figured out, is a red herring. Nice now i reallt cant wait to see this!
ReallyRedPanda Just read the wiki. It is very basic and follows exactly as the trailer shows.
***** Well...watch the movie/check the wiki page, I don't wanna ruin it for everyone...
ReallyRedPanda What if your comment is also a red herring? What if _my_ comment is _also_ a red herring? What if your brain, _reading_ my comment, is reading it _wrong_, to fool you?! Don't trust yourself! Don't trust me! Don't even trust this sentence!
***** It clearly does
What I love and hate about this movie, is that it literally fooled me emotionally as it did Caleb. No one expected that ending. LOL.
You must be a female or a very young guy to not see that coming...
@@tiramisu1p4pgoat6 what does that have to do with being a female?
I too was surprised
I expected that ending just by watching the trailer. Sorry, you are not shrewd my friend.
Interesting story! The film will be released in the United Kingdom on January 23, 2015.
I wud b definitly watching out for this...
*spoiler*
AVA!!! WAIT!! you forgot to take your battery charger with you.
you also forgot to take your repairman with you for your daily maintenance!!

This trailer is so much better than the one on TV that tells you absolutely nothing about the movie.
I love when the trailer convinces me to watch the movie, even before it finishes, looks awesome.

Remember that one time Poe Dameron and General Hux made a sexy robot together?
omfg XD
In the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens end credit scene
NO! He is Bill Weasley
Oscar Isaac, better win "Best Actor" this year, or I'll be pissed. This movie's got it all... Screenplay. Acting. Photography. Soundtrack. One of the best, thought-provoking Sci-Fi's to date.

Coulda been a different person picking him up
It was so good! And I loved seeing Kitty and Constantine Levin together again!!
This was an extremely enthralling movie that could actually happen in the future.
after watching the movie... The trailer literally gives everything away
Even if Caleb didn't pass Ava's "test"... "Are you a good person" and even if she did want a shot at being real without someone knowing she is a robot she didn't have to leave the one that helped in the one room 😟 but then she is a robot so how much guilt could she have? Glad to have a film out there that does not spell it out for you. A game of chess? for awhile... then poker. Great acting, great film, great atmosphere. A rare film. I hope it continues.
Cracks my top 10 all time favorite sci films. Incredible movie. 5/5.
Not seen 2 many movies I gather then.
+roderick sloan I've seen plenty. Each to their own opinion. :)
Eddie Cardwell Yea i reckon you are right there sport anyway have a good one eddie.
I agree Eddie. This movie kept my focus and attention like no other movie in the past couple of years.
I am so glad I saw the movie before I saw the Trailer. Every trailer seems to divulge too much information in the wrong order. You know what that does right? Ruin the whole movie -- QUIT IT!
Please release the DVD as soon as possible. I need to watch this again.
I predict this become a Sci Fi classic and withstands the test of time. Brilliant. Haunting. Unforgettable.
this movie creeped me the hell out, the sound and the music. it is a good movie but one i dont ever want to see again, just the way it was shown, the camera angles, the long shots of scenes. i thought it was a horror film at some points. the ending, jesus. grammar aside, this is a thought provoking movie if you get into it.
+Jason Bieberle the slow buildup of the paranoia was well done.
This movie cured my insomnia. Was absolutely knocked out the first time I watched it, but I'll give it another go. There's so much hype around it.
Stick to simple movies , plots aren't your thing
Arthur Dean Or maybe I just didn't enjoy the movie. Says a lot about you to judge me based on the fact that I thought this movie was boring.
+P. Sarko Well, it was good in something at least :)
Let me guess. She manipulates the boy into loving her and distrusting his boss so she can escape, then ditches him.
+Conswa McGaga Hmmm, she's almost human, at least female, LOL!
+Conswa McGaga no
+Conswa McGaga yes
What's new a typical female.
roderick sloan i mean i was more commenting on how hollywood continues to stereotype women into certain archetypes.
Ava never liked Caleb, nor did it pretend to like him. The machine was simply able to manipulate him using it's intellect (courtesy of Nathan) and because he is human (possessing emotion).
spoiler alert much, even though i already saw it
Pink Karma p
Horribly some humans act like Ava.
" MIND BLOWING GREAT MOVIE.. I WAS SURFING CHANNELS ON TV AT 1 AM AND IT STARTED ON A CHANNEL. I WATCHED THIS FULL TILL END AND IT WAS 3AM.. I WATCHED THIS UNTIL 3AM FOR FIRST TIME..WOW.."
she should have been nominated for an oscar
It was for the Danish Girl. Not this movie.
Raɱɑɗy Alɱuɦtɑʆ

I am late but I managed too see the movie. This movie is mind bending, love the ending! Great job guys!
We need more movies about AI technology helping humans accomplish further goals so the general public will calm their tits
Terrific movie. Very smart and well acted.
Just saw this movie tonight. SO GOOD! It really shows the possibilities of advanced AI capable of love and deception. This is a MUST SEE if you are at all interested in anything related to computers.
Saw it tonight. Good movie. Worth the $8.

Doc Bino Major flaw, by the way this is a spoiler please do not read on unless you have already seen the movie. Anyway; at the end when she escapes the island; she doesn't bring her charging pad, so within 24 hours she will run out of power.
zepeterinma c'mon... why would you do that? And I don't think she'd be dumb enough to not have thought about that.
am i the only one that wanted a happy ending with Caleb and Ava?
Dude. That's what I wanted to. I was so shocked when she abandoned him
Steven Diahy I felt heart broken :(... But she passed the test though ahahaha
My uncle suggested we watch this movie and I thought “Ugh.....nooo.” But I was polite and agreed to watch it.
I’m SO THANKFUL to him I did.
Being immortal, learning more and getting stronger everyday. Technology is the next step in human evolution.
I saw this a couple days ago. The best movie I have seen in a long time. Amazing.
from deus ex machina; GOD from the machine. I want to see it.
Hearing DJ Shadows tune over the trailer makes seem even more interesting
Hell yeah man!
Yeah. They're using his music in lots of ads now...
She uses the blond guy as a tool to escape. She uses human emotions to manipulate him into turning against her creator. Joe Rogan got me into this movie. I have to watch it
Yea I found out about this movie because of Joe. Highly recommended it.
Robofloyo + Ava = true love forever

I loved the movie. Some people saying the ending was bad. Just because the ending is not what you wanted, doesn't mean is bad. At the end Eva seems confused, which makes me wonder if she returns for Caleb.

I feel like the reason Ava left Caleb in the end was because of her previous "test" on him when she asked him if he was a good person. Her moving on to the next question does not necessarily mean his response was truth and not a lie. So she saw him as someone who lied about being good and left him there.
And she wanted to be real and he treated her like a robot not giving straight answers. I feel bad for him tho
What she did to him at the end of the movie is so fucked up. He wanted to help her escape. And he showed her more love than her creator did and she just abadoned him.
Wish they had a different actor for main role. There’s so much potential
I liked that the robot tricked everyone. Escaped and killed oscar isaac and left the other dude for dead. Totally didnt expect that!!
So this movie already came out 2 years ago. This looks exactly the same as The Machine (2013) Look it up on IMDB
Such an amazing movie. This was one of, if not, the best movie that I've ever seen. It will have you on the edge of your seat from the beginning of the movie all the way to the credits. So amazing!!
Super excited about the new model
This is the abomination of desolation
Daniel 2:43 "As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay."
This looks so interesting, can‘t wait to see it!
Took some strong ass oil last night and watched this. The end nearly gave me a panic attack. Fantastic movie
So many good movies are coming out.
Alicia Vikander is beautiful.
Excellent excellent movie. Cerebral and authentic
I'll only see it if it's X-rated.
It was the best movie I have seen in quite some time. It was amazing.
DJ Shadow! Looks like a good movie
This movie should teach people why we shouldn't have Ai. People think people are bad in real life just imagine how Ai would be. It could lead to a complete extinction of human life. People who are human would start to wonder if they really are human and try cutting theirself to see if they really are human.
Such an amazing movie one of the best I've seen this year such great acting 👌🏼👏🏼😁
This looks really good:) I am actually excited for this movie^^
we need another movie like this...... its been 8 years already welp
When you start whatching this movie it is good to start drinking along with the movie as it goes. I did it by mistake the second time and i can asure you you will see it from diferent perspective :)
The trailer gives away too much
FREAKING AMAZING FILM, Just brilliant
Awesome Movie I highly recommend
Anyone hear anything of a probably sequel?
IF they kept both Ava and Caleb the budget would at least tipple.
Looks very interesting! Can't wait to see it.
Thanks Valorie
That was the movie I saw seating next to my ex in a theater and I didn’t realize she’d treat me the same way as that robot did ;-( I ended up the same way as Nathan did and still can not bounce back and live with my own failure.
it's a very thought prevoking movie. unfortunately it'll be some type of cult classic film for people that hate people in general, but somehow, have removed themselves from being people. The "gifted people"....
Great movie
Way too much hype...the ending made me happy that it didn't cost me a dime to watch it.
I can't get a full movie in english please help 😦😦😦
Most predictable movie of all time but still is good
