✔️ DYK, lymphoma is one of the most common feline cancers, reported at 30% of all cancers.
✔️ In part one of this series on cat lymphoma, Dr Sue gives you an overview of what you need to know about cat lymphoma including the causes and risks.
✔️ Lymphoma is a systemic disease that requires chemotherapy in almost all cases. Treated cats live longer, and chemotherapy is generally well-tolerated. Outcomes for treated cats are less predictable than dogs, but cats tend to tolerate chemotherapy better than dogs.

Not sure if I would put my cat through chemotherapy. Not only is it expensive but is it really worth it to see them struggle? Just because they "live longer" doesn't mean they're living a quality life.

I thought the same thing when my cat was diagnosed. My mind went straight to all the memories i have of humans suffering immensely during chemo. Our vet let us know that cats do much better on chemo than humans do, and she was right. Our cat Yoshi acted like he felt much better very quickly. He still had some hard days too, but they were much better than he was before chemo. He was 5 years old at the time, and completely lethargic and refusing to eat or drink before chemo. Chemo made him very hungry all the time, and acting like a kitten with energy much of the time.
We were told the chemo would only extend his life up to two months, but he is still alive 5 years later. He has not been sick since then, and we are thankful for every single extra day we have with him in our lives.
I’m not saying every cat should have chemo, but know that many do not suffer during it. We had to wean him off of it very slowly, stopping the kind he had abruptly can hurt them. We tapered the dosage very slowly over months.

Our furbaby was diagnosed with intestinal tumour last week.. she was very unwell, 3 vets confirmed it. We are so upset. She is 10, a rescue cat and we've had her 6 mths. The vet have her steroid shot and she perked up and eating more. It's just time to see how she goes but I don't think the prognosis is good. We're very upset and spoiling her like mad.

My sweet little (4 pound!) kitty Didi was diagnosed a week ago. I am just devastated. She and her sister “Fred” (named so coz she must have hit her head really hard at 1 month old or less so she’s always been a bit retarded but Didi was looking out for her and feeding whatever bugs she could catch until they made it from the park at the end of my street to my house… that was 17 years ago almost to the day…). Fred was diagnosed about8 years ago with what I call Cat AIDS but Didi never got it. But now this bombshell and she’s just fallen like a rock. We’ve been dropper feeding her water and begging her to eat just little bits (not even one whole Fancy Feast when she was normally eating rats that she hunted outside at night and plenty of wet Friskies as well. Being so small it seems like she ate her weight every day. The Vet School here at the University of Florida found weird bean shaped things in her stomach on an X-ray which I assumed were just hairballs but 2 vets there said it was lymphoma… I declined to put her through chemo coz of our experience with it in people and didn’t want to put her through all that at her old age and secondary to that is the cost which starts at $4,000.00 just for the testing and more X-rays (a bit exorbitant for a teaching hospital I thought…) but now I’m hearing this video and am starting to wonder. I don’t even know if she has that FeLV… only that Fred has the kitty AIDS virus. I need to listen to all the rest of them so I can make a more informed decision. But your comment is upsetting to me coz I didn’t want her to be in pain. This is just horrible. I feel like I’m in a bad dream and can’t wake up. 😢

Hi Dr. Sue, I just found your channel! My cat was FIV and FeLV positive and developed lymphoma. It was found when we took him to the emergency vet because he could not walk and howled when he was touched, he could not eat either. He was also life threateningly anemic. I was told that chemo would only give him maybe a few months more with me and the other option was to put him to sleep. We did put him to sleep, as I couldn’t bear to see him suffering and I was concerned he wouldn’t respond to chemo. This happened 2 years ago, but this video made me feel a lot better about my decision and also gave me a better understanding of his diagnosis.

Recently she stopped eating for almost a week and with some steroids we got her to was a small bite but she has stoped eating again. She has lost 6 pounds and most likely has not much time left to live. There is nothing we can do really anymore sh we are giving her the best last days of her life that we can.

I'm so glad to have found this channel, but unfortunately I'm finding it too late. Last summer my girlfriend and I adopted a felv cat. I don't know how long she was at the adoption center, but after listening I'm pretty certain by the time we got her it would have been too late to start treating her. Back on point, we adopted her and we really didn't know anything about what we were getting in to. However, we absolutely fell in love with her. We named her Sabrina. She was my GF's rock, her companion. She was my best little friend. She would wake us in the morning and she would get carried on my shoulder while I took the dog on her morning walk. She loved to lay in my lap in our chair. A few times this year she had episodes of vomiting. We took her to the vet, but none of the times did they mention gi lymphoma until this past weekend. They'd treat her with cerinia and send us on our way. Sabrina would feel better, eat like a pig and everything seemed to be back to normal. I was assuming this would be the same. We got home from the vet, I put her in our chair and turned her little heated throw on low for her and left for work. When we returned home we found she had passed laying by my guitar 💔. We are both just lost, but so very happy for the times we had.

I just lost my soul animal, my dearest cat to GI large cell lymphoma. I’m wondering now, if my other cats should get the Felv vaccine to protect them against getting lymphoma? I discussed this with our vet, and he agrees, wish I’d known about the vaccine sooner. I was told my cats didn’t need it previously, since they’re all indoors. One of my indoor cats is FIV,, very gentle and friendly and never bites or play rough. My vet now says he should get the vaccine also. Please advise thank you!

Hi Dr sue My 3 year old boy I have just noticed yesterday has a lump in his chest. When inspecting it it’s a big bigger than the size of a pea but a more oval shape. It is moveable (not attached to anything underneath) I have got an appointment for the vets but earliest they had was 10 days and I feel like I’m having a heart attack with worry.
My biggest worry is mammary gland cancer. I understand it is mainly older female cats who suffer from this but I now have it in my head he has it. His behaviour is normal. He is neutered. The other thing I should mention he is constantly being attacked by a neighbours cat and often comes in with scratches. The area of the lump looks like a tiny bit of scab has heeled and nearly finished peeling off. But I’m also worried as it is about 3cm away from his nipple even though the nipples look normal.
    Thank you

I took her to the ER for pets the vet thought her tummy looked tense she thought she swallowed something. I told she doesn’t do that. We thought she had a virus so they had anti nausea drugs it worked only sometimes. Then she got worst last Friday she was hiding from me like she didn’t recognize me. So I called the vet so I brought her at 12:30PM right the vet thought it wasn’t normal her tummy so he took a ultrasound and saw the mass and took out some of the cells it was big cell lymphoma.
