- You don't need to plan an exotic trip to find creative inspiration. Just look up, says Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society. As he shares charming photos of nature's finest aerial architecture, Pretor-Pinney calls for us all to take a step off the digital treadmill, lie back and admire the beauty in the sky above.

This is my favourite ted talk ever.
Seeing the world through a lens of gratitude.
I can't understand why this received some thumbs down?
"At first I was blind, now I can see.." Clouds... Beautiful... Love
A man after my own heart. Been taking photos of clouds for many years 🙂♥️🌻♐.
Representing Cloud Appreciation Society, Gavin Pretor-Pinney gives a memorable talk about clouds. This is not about cloud computing...this is about the real clouds. Good and highly recommended.
I saw this video and i went to the city outsides to see the mountains and the clouds. thanks
brainscake where do you live.? I’m in alberta
I love this; my kids and I will lay in the grass or on the beach an make up stories about the shapes we see in the clouds. My 6 year old son sees airplanes all the time, I see hearts and my daughters usually see animal shapes and people.
Brilliant, gentle and inspiring! Thank you with all my heart!
A great talk by a great storyteller... And about clouds, none the less. Loved it! :)
I love clouds, especially storm clouds. Me being from Seattle I've learned to really enjoy rain. The smell, sounds, overall feeling. That's all done from a cloud! :)
really inspiring, especially for reminding us to find beauty in the most common places that normally wouldn't get noticed
Gavin Pretor-Pinney: a wholesome icon
If you ever read Gavin's book, "Cloudspotting", he talks about those clouds and he says pretty much the exact thing. Except he puts a spin on it--those are the clouds that 'clean' our atmosphere. He always sees the silver lining! It's a really great book, by the way.
Through the eyes of the clouds is a very beautiful way of seeing the sky, they always add greatness and more luster to my day, a picturesque moment by moment journey. Thanks so much for caring and sharing about clouds.
"When they were kids, when you were masters of daydreaming" Yup, 21 and I'm still getting better at it :-D I love looking at clouds, I love allowing my imagination to drift along in the breeze. I'm still a kid, just with more stuff do go with :-P
You made my day sir.
Proud member of CAS since 2008 and the first in my country! Wohoo!
What’s your country? I’m the first and only one in mine still.
just lovely
Me encantó la conferencia. Comparto estas ideas y cuando estoy muy agobiada por las circunstancias me voy a caminar al atardecer para mirar las nubes sus formas, colores , esa imensidad me da paz y fuerza para continuar. Gracias! Saludos desde Argentina.
Saludos desde Colombia, Pamela.
Wow ! I love clouds of all kinds. They're god's work.
so inspiring!
what a good talk!
If I could paint, basically all of my work would be of clouds.
This was surprisingly good! Never really thought a talk about clouds, would be able to interest me, or move me :)
lovely 😊
Great for meditation! Cloud meditation!
didn't think I was gonna like this talk but this was awesome. I wanna go do nothing right now
☁️❤️☁️
Just brilliant!! Wonderful talk! :D
This was lovely.
You could say the same to alot of other activities that are pointless. Like meditating. Very liberating, joyous, and care-free
I got inspired :) !
that man is cloud-seeker extraordinary.
this comedy and charm made me wobble.
Thanks....
As a pilot, I'm not too fond of clouds. But once you get above them they look very nice from above.
Need to join the Society, we look up, but forget to watch the moving forest in the sky.
I'm tired and i'm just tired ok , and i have an assignment due and im Forced to watch this 😭😭😭😭
idk people hey Ciara
@@ceoofchachaslide2338 hello would this be donajy
Bruh same I have to watch this too
idk people yes
@@ceoofchachaslide2338 nice
I never actually looked for shapes in clouds, I noticed them at times but never did it for the sake of doing it.
I've always had strong imagination ever since I was a kid, and didn't need to look for stuff to see things that weren't there.
"Cloud Appreciation Society" - Without the slightest surprise, founded by a Briton.
His talk reminded me of this.
Leisure (1911) W.H. Davies
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?-
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows:
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
Great idea, good thoughts and funny :) I agree with Sam, no one needs drugs (unless necessary prescription of course) to see amazing things if they are open enough to look. Taking drugs is playing russian roulette with your sanity, some get away clean, some don't. A risk your willing to take when you can have equal if not better experiences of a natural quality...Think before you act, because a mistake you make can be forever.
my phone is full of nothing but pictures I have taken of the sky.
You can watch him live Mondays on Cloud Appreciation Society, 10am Pacific on FB
It's a figure of speech! Look it up!
the problem with clouds in Britain is that there is only one gigantic one that covers the whole country so there's no pretty shapes to search for. Just a big blanket of grey blandness covering everything you see. Except for the last couple of weeks that is.
Who looked out there windows during or just after this video.? I’m in chestermere Alberta where are you from.?
I KNOOOW
Who needs drugs when the most amazing and inspiring things are just under your nose!
haha .. ... I love it!
''Cloud spotting legitimizes doing nothing." :-)
I'm actually just about to add that to my 'favourite quotations' on my facebook. hehe
まさに「上を向いて歩こう」
"What is aimless, is sacred" - Salvador Dali would say.
YES I saw Homer too :DDD
some bits of his speech reminded me of George Carlin
It always annoys me, when radio stations are whining about a cloudy sky and proclaim a blue cloudless sky as the greatest thing there is.
okay got it I just thought there was a term called "chemical drug" the meant "drug that was created in a lab" but I was wrong...
He really reminds me of George Carlin.
Hey now, I love clouds! My eyes are extremely sensitive, and, unfortunately, I think I look fucking awful with sunglasses on. So, I thank the clouds when they shade me . . . except on days when the entire sky is overcast, which seems to simply spread the glare into an omnipresent stinging no matter which direction I look.
Sidewalk/white buildings are the devil.
I love clouds, at least some of them, but I hate those huge dark things that cover the whole sky and forbid me a sight of the sun for days.
cumulus clouds remind me of super mario.
I know I just thought there was a term called chemical drug that meant "drug that was created in a lab" but I was wrong! Jeezeloweese TH-cam won't let this one go!
I guess this guy has never been to England or northern Europe in the winter season when there is one huge engulfing cloud that covers the whole sky from hoizon to horizon all winter long.
Old souls probably embrace this view, and young souls seem to ridicule this man.
For the most part, yes, but I happen to be 17 and absolutely loved this Ted Talk.
@The Cascadian Hiker my comment has nothing to do with chronological age.
Bravo on not shoehorning "climate change" into the talk. I had a cringe just ready and waiting for it to happen.
I don't think people on heroin or meth see the world as such an amazing place...
TQuit
l agrre
😆
some kids will never see a real cloud or blue skies, just a metallic haze.
3:14 Homer Simpson
not under they are abowe
I know I know.... I just didn't know that every drug is a chemical drug, I thought that chemical drugs are made in a lab and others are from nature or other sorts...
...
Is weed a chemical drug? Isn't it a sort of leaf?
lol
Woah hold your horses! First of all, "under your nose" is a figure of speech, you should look it up. And second, when I say drugs I mean chemical drugs, suck as Heroin or Meth. I am a "yes please" when it comes to Cannabis if you know what I mean.
second
I hate those clouds cause they stop me from actually seeing the clouds!
I don't believe in moral codes, it promotes judging. For example when your moral code is somewhat different than mine, I will judge you and find myself better than you.
And I have tried the green drug a few times, and I don't know makes me feel weird if you know what I mean... They're simply not for me, but I'm not against it one bit!

Homer kissing Moe?!? that's a little disturbing :)
Or in this case, way above your nose. ;-p
東大入試から来ました
Honestly, drugs aren't the end all be all of existence . . . but you shouldn't limit your life experiences based on morality, if that is indeed the case. There's nothing wrong with saying " I simply have no interest in drugs." But it's pretty dumb to claim morality (not saying you are!)
Food for thought.
. . . also, Portnoy's Complaint was one of the craziest things I've ever read. Not an inconsiderable thing, if I do say so myself.
There's chemicals in a leaf.
All this trash talk about drugs. Just go out sit and look up. The speech was great, awesome. All just slow down and relax
*Above your nose.
If only weed was legal....
I'll be lying if I said no, when I say drugs I mean heavy chemical drugs like meth and shit like that. To me Cannabis is more of a fruit if you know what I mean...
The majority of my time watching this was spent thinking "Yeah this is great, but in no way enlightening or beneficial to our lives...why is this on TED??" Then I started thinking of the uproar of the would-be prodigies in response to this. Then the punch line... Embrace the nothingness instead of expelling it from you life like a disease. God knows it's probably the answer to all that is wrong in this world.
Not a word about chemtrails? Planes spraying chemicals in the air to control the weather? Oh wait, he's from the UK. Maybe it's only us Americans who are playing Russian roulette with the planet.
Because this is not a talk of fiction.
You should read his book. He talks about it there. He can't talk about everything in less than 15 minutes.
The sauce, it is getting weaker.
cocaine is one hell of a drug
I want what hes smoking...but seriously a well needed wake up call to all of us..i feel like the buddah under the bodhi tree
u sound like someone who never tried drugs
