To be honest, some of them might have a difficult time with variants. For example, I remember how Nakamura struggled to understand 5Dchess. Not sure if he persisted and got better, he is crazy good at other games like minesweeper, but it was odd to see him struggle with a chess variant I thought it was easy to pick up. Some masters like this sort of stuff, like, Eric Rosen is a great example of mastering variants, he is probably the GOAT at Duck Chess. He can manage to combine his chess lessons and learn new ones from variants pretty easily.

The term "Spell Cards" reminds me of Yu-Gi-Oh! Also, I wish all other different versions of chess have special rules. I mean give Super Mario Chess special rules, such as giving all the pieces special abilities based on character and item.

Can you force the spell to "recalculate", resulting in check/checkmate once the spell resolves?
It doesn't seem possible, given the way the spell targeting mechanics work. What sort of situation are you thinking of in which that might happen?
I feel like since a player is unable to move a king into check normally, you can't move your king into spell mate
