  • Part one:tear down of two Prius NiMH power modules to be reconfigured to 48v to use as our bank and power our Magnum MS4448PAE Inverter. We have about 5000w of solar panels between the trailer 890 and on the Motorhome 4200 all running through an Outback 80 and then onto the Magnum and also to a Victron 75/15 which takes the 48v bank and takes it down to 12v and keeps the coach and starting batteries topped off and healthy
We have been full time in the Ark for almost 5 years so far and wouldn’t have it any other way!

Did you ever finish this project? Id like to see how you put the battery together. I have several old Prius battery banks laying around I am trying to repurpose for almost the exact same thing you are doing.

@@jdestruct0 after a couple explosions and gassing off we scrapped the idea and went with Tesla modules.

How are you charging? Can you send a link to the charge controller?

Working with batteries, it may be a good idea to remove your rings before sticking your hands into it! I'm a retired electrician with all of my digits, but I know others that have some interesting stories to tell!

Thank you, that is solid advice but my ring has never left my finger since my wedding day 22 years ago and it can’t come off unless cut off

@@GODventures thats a serious health risk. You could end up with your finger getting amputated

Nice video. I was wondering if NiMH is a viable option for solar applications.. Thank you!
Any complaints or comments so far?

Well my Magnum ARC50 remote failed and my batteries crashed down to 41v and apparently have shifted and no longer will top out where they were.
3rd warranty claim in less than a year. Not real happy with Magnum thus far.

How the batteries working out for ya

Switched to two Tesla S modules wired to 48v and hoping to add 3 more.
The NiMH did much better than regular wet deep cycle batteries but not even close to what the Tesla modules perform at.

I found the nimh Prius packs for super cheap. I’m wondering if it’ll be worth it a all. $50/module of 28. Basically the whole battery that goes in one Prius car.
Can you expand a little bit of your experience with the nimh for solar?

@@johnle231 best to get a controller for those to prevent runaway. Did have a couple explode during testing. They will overcharge a bad cell so be careful. Check and triple check your parameters and test every cell. In our rig we had a gas sensor for propane leaks and they off gassed just enough to set that sensor off
