The man has a way of turning very complicated stats and situations into a very simple and broken down style of teaching that is far superior to the average teacher or educator. Always impressive and educational, while staying within a degree of the actual world, it never stops amazing and Inspiring, I've tried to mimic it , while teaching my own children and while speaking to youth in groups. We need more like him, in a world that over complicates situations to keep the average person confused, and control the narrative, as I read the truth all the time, while listening to government or political agents saying the exact opposite, because most won't read and even fewer understand.

    • @m3driver245
      @m3driver245 ปีที่แล้ว

@@robertlustmord1636 you’re putting the cart before the horse. High criminality is the result of lack of opportunity, not the other way around.
Look at it this way. People have to survive and people typically opt for the easier/more accessible option. If employment opportunities exist at levels that could provide for someone and their families with little or no risk to their safety vs crime that cause huge risk people would often take the low risk option.
This was exemplified by a seemingly unrelated circumstance, iTunes. Before iTunes people would download songs illegally at an alarming rate. When iTunes became an option and you could download any song you wanted to $0.99 then suddenly almost overnight the illegal music download issue became essentially non-existent. Why? Because there was a safe low risk option. People don’t want to steal, they just wanted the music. On a similar note, people don’t want to commit many crimes for money, but they NEED the money to survive.
The fact that areas become crime ridden is due to a severe lack of opportunity that then builds on itself.

*Top 10 Highlights about Thomas Sowell* 🇺🇸 Many dub this man a "national treasure." Often in the comments section. And he actually is. He is unparalleled:
*1* - Born in 1930 into true poverty in segregated Gastonia, North Carolina.
*2* - Adopted by his great-aunt since his father died shortly before his birth and his mother (a maid) couldn't take care of a 5th child alone. She died herself not long after.
*3* - Grew up in NYC (Harlem) where his cousin, introduced him to the NYC library and he grew to become an absolutely voracious reader and student of the world.
*4* - U.S. Marine Corps (drafted during Korean war w/ honorable discharge)
*5* - Night school at Howard University
*6* - Harvard University (BA) w/ magna cum laude
Note: "The principle benefit of a Harvard degree is never again having to be impressed by anyone with a Harvard degree" --Sowell
    *7* - Columbia University (MA) - economics
*8* - University of Chicago (PhD) - economics
*9* - Studied under Milton Friedman, his mentor
*10* - Was a self-avowed Marxist into his 20s, and Democrat voter until 1972 when he switched to Republican. He first caught national traction during the Reagan years. Although I would say he is neither right nor left; he is himself. He is not tribal; he is honest.
While the above certainly impresses, what really impresses is listening to this man directly! There are countless hours to be found of him online. He is among the most cool-calm-collected in the public arena today. In my opinion. A legit individual. He thinks for himself. Always has. But, yes, he is an intellectual titan - the breadth & depth of his knowledge -- in history (both domestic and world), economics, and sociology is staggering. But above all he is NOT the typical academic man mired in intellectual vanity, preening himself in his credentials, contributing nothing to the real world. There's a sense of authenticity and wisdom about the man. This is what stands out above all else - a lifetime of Character. And humility. I suppose, after all, one doesn't go from studying Marxism and carrying its banner to becoming an American liberatarian-conservative thinker without a truly introspective sense of humility.
This man is truly presidential. There are very few on his level. If it sounds like I'm singing his praises it's because he is praiseworthy. Sadly he is 92 and won't be around for much longer. Will be a major loss for this country and although I've never met him I will miss him. Straight up - he's the fckng man.
    *UPDATE - 11TH HIGHLIGHT:*

In a discussion of Africa, he points out that the entire continent is a mesa, with a huge drop from the inner mesa to the coast, meaning shipping is difficult, because there are few accessible ports. No shipping, no trade, no trade, lower income. Simply astounding grasp of his subject matter, right down to the geography.

If anybody knows anything about commerce and shipping, exports and imports, should have a basic understanding of this. For instance, landlock countries or areas that have oil are building pipelines as a means of transportation. The harder it is to ship the product the more it is going to cost.

Something that would blow people's minds today is that he dropped out of high school due to his family having economic difficulties, joined the Marines during the Korean war then graduated from Harvard earned his master's degree from Columbia, and then finished with getting his doctorate from the University of Chicago. To me his greatest accomplishment is keeping himself on a path of learning that he felt would solve the problems he seen as most schools want to teach you what to think not how to learn.

Bro in the Jordan t-shirt had the best point: "we need to make school cool". Bro understood the entire premise of what Thomas Sowell was trying to get at. To the bro in the camo hoodie: funding public schools more is the exact opposite of what you want to do. Public schools have received inordinate amounts of funding, yet utterly failed time and time again in their mission. Remember, it's about creating a culture and space for our young people to learn, discover, imagine, strive, and thrive, and this is achieved through dedicated institutions and teachers who will teach them disciple, to take full ownership of their lives, and show them that hard work is what will take them places.

And every word he spoke is STILL relevant today! He has stood the test of time, just as ALL Truths will! When we pursue the Gifts each of us were granted by God we all have the ability to succeed and flourish! It's just that simple. It's good to see y'all searching out truths! I was raised having to watch William F. Buckley's "Firing Line" every week on PBS. We literally called ice cream "Buckley", cuz we couldn't have ice cream if we didn't watch him. Thankfully, my parents emphasized intellectualism, fairness, debate, etc...I am SO delighted to see you young gentlemen learning so much. We only learn when we calmly listen to all sides.

He also was a student of the brilliant Milton Friedman, who I also recommend you consider viewing. Nice reaction video, here.

I really appreciate what you said about being cool to make good grades, that's severely underrated. I grew up in a very poor area with a lot of gang activity, I got bullied for years and I started to do worse at school because of that but mostly because I got bullied less when I did worse in school. So it was the culture of the area to do worse and pressure others into doing worse too, it's hard when you grow up in that. I almost got held back twice, did summer school 3 times, and it wasn't until high school when a few good guys who did work hard and supported good education befriended me that I started to turn around, even then it took almost 2 years to undo that poor performing mindset. The high school still wasn't good, but we shielded each other from it and worked hard, I lost time but it made a big impact and I've since moved away from there. Many people didn't move on from there, dropped out, and got sucked into the same cycle. It's the mindset, it's hard to undo, and it's hard to do in the face of people around you who pressure you the other way. You guys are awesome, so glad I found your channel. I 100% look up to Thomas Sowell also, his works led me to research and understand more, and he's almost always correct from what I've found in my own research.

Glad you got to see Sowell young, he was even more fun in the 70s, bigger afro, too. I have been lucky enough to have this guy at the edge of my life since I was a young teenager. Thomas Sowell is brilliant. He thinks for himself based on what he perceives. And what he perceives is the essence of what is there, sans the typical stereotypical societal norms. He can’t be boxed in by questions that don’t address the actual facts of a situation. He’s 92 and hasn’t slowed down at all. Thank God this man has written books because he is a treasure and what a loss when he dies.

The big issue with schools is that they don't really have any accountability. They constantly ask for more funding, and higher salaries, but the results keep getting worse, and the standards keep dropping.
The voucher program Thomas was talking about would allow parents to pick what schools they wanted their kids to go to, so if their current school is slacking or theres a bad environment parents would have the freedom to pick a school that will give the kid better opportunities.
