Both companies have pro-censorship bosses, and both suffered cyber attack with terrible responses. New boss... same, if not, even worse than the old boss. It could be worse... Could be Tencent. Ok, that doesn't really make it better at all. The sad joke is probably the bad current CEO at Kadokawa probably stays when Sony acquires... Making it the worst of both worlds. I wish this censorship spree going on would stop, and this monopoly on anime/ manga distribution in the West is absurd. Also, Visa/Mastercard are hypocrites as they are fine with their "brand" for adult things that aren't Japanese...
Instead of buying the 18+ content straight up, why not make a charge-up wallet for the site that you can use to buy what you want? It will bypass the mastercard/visa stuff
Infrastructure is a PITA to set up and maintain especially if it involves multiple countries with different exchange rates, and every inconvenience no matter how minor exponentially lowers the potential customerbase it's the same reason why despite a lot of the stuff people complain about with a lot of businesses or platforms actually having workarounds or ways to opt out the inconvenience alone still means most people will never actually use them, plus Visa controls like ALL the credit cards most if not all the name brands I can even think of are subsidiaries, the only competition is Mastercard and they do the same mafia tactics ergo not actually competition in this regard, the two of them together I think legitimately are the entire credit card industry so it's not like it's a hit most companies could actually weather long enough to build their own infrastructure especially since a lot of the customers won't come back on account of laziness even if they managed to finish it before going bankrupt
For the most part, Japan is on the move. Japan is about to have the worst environmental hazards in its history and the world is moving too slow for Japan to get out of it. Not a lot of people are learning Japanese to help speed up getting Japanese cultures and medias outside of Japan. If we want these medias to stay alive, we have to find many ways to save the many cultures of Japan with Japanese people.
Banned or heavily censored into the ground. Modern companies cant really make anytning knew so they have to bastardize everything. Hence why the buy up all the rights then banish them to oblivion. So only their "modern audience approved" shit remains. Or worse they buy up rights and then shit all over the lore. Star wars, disney, marvel, terminator, lord of the rings and many more.
If the owners of Kadokawa want to cash out and fail to keep the company together, they'd be better off selling their IPs, studios, divisions, etc. to multiple Japanese domestic companies that aren't publicly listed companies (listed on the stock market), in order to ensure that anime, manga, light and visual novels and video games remain Japanese. Neither Sony, nor Kakao, nor Tencent are lesser evils. Is it possible that Visa and Mastercard are holding sites like Bookwalker economically hostage so Sony can buy them up?
This is why I just read fan scanlations of most manga. Censorship is enforced against our wills so often and I refuse to financially support companies telling me what I'm allowed to pay to read or watch.
Anyway for western fans to make a petition and someone skilled in Japanese translating it to send to Sony Japan "shut down Sony California before they bankrupt you"
Kind of makes me wonder if Sony isn't in some way conspiring with the payment processors and other like-minded interests to crush the industry in a multi-pronged strategy. Japan has been like a mighty fortress for so long, but now western interests have finally started to breach that fortress.
My Tinfoil hat says it's all a ploy to destroy Japanese competition. H-content aside, anime and manga is very huge and is currently dominating even in the US where comics once reigned. They get a hold of those, they're gonna shove the MESSAGE the West is oh so eager to push into everyone.
"it's linked now" What do you mean "now"? They were always linked. This was always about Tencent, BlackRock, Vanguard, and their other pals taking control of the entire world. Guess who owns Sony, Kadokawa, and every payment processor.
This reminds me of how shift up CEO was excited to work with Sony and then had a pr disaster of a launch due to Sony interference. Seems like a lot of companies are completely unaware that this isn't the same company anymore, like they still think it's ps2 ps3 era.
I have heard that this merger is being pushed by the less-censorious Japanese side of Sony and not the overtly pro-censorship American side. Seems the American side of things is falling out of favor with the higherups/stockholders due to recent failings, so it might not be as bad as being predicted. Still not a big fan of the merger and so much going under Sony regardless, but there does appear to be a possible silver lining to it.
this is literally a battle between freedom of creativity or censoring creativity and I fall on support freedom of creativity. the other problem is that even if they're not happy with the leadership they have at kadokawa I don't think they understand how bad it can end up being if they really push this to happen the employees.
Now I'm really worried about Yen Press & their future of doing audiobooks! I'm also wondering if the Kadokawa CEO is responsible for approving those pachinko machines & what's been going on with SAO since 2021. A lot of bad marketing has been going on with SAO lately & they've been releasing pachinko machines will exclusive anime scenes. Re:Zero also has one too btw. As for the anime side, I guess we're never going to see another sexy Asuna scene in SAO again. No Asuna bath scene in the next SAO movie & Gushing Over Magical Girls season 2 is most likely screwed.

As someone who recently got it into anime, I actually wish anime didn't become so mainstream now (more like the West/the US audience) because Sony/visa/mastercard marks the beginning of the end.
I called this years ago now that a majority of sony sits in California this is essentially manga and anime havng to go through California sensibilities to get greenlit now
Start thinking about how you vote with your wallets now. Personally I plan to throw money at alternatives when they pop up and not use Visa, Master Card, or Discover to make purchases since they like to cut off cultured vendors.

Imo, it should be illegal to buy foreign companies, so there won't be changes from one company's ideology to the other that is foreign which would have a different one. To Agree or to disagree on this opinion, it would be in your own right.
Foreign investment is just economic proxy warfare it always has been, it should never have been allowed at least not without major restrictions, as much as I loathe the CCP they actually have the right basic idea about how to handle it with their forced domestic business partners model and willingness to just say no to foreign investments that go against their "ideals"
One of the major problems of globalism is that domestic companies can easily work with foreign companies to undermine their domestic competitors or sections of their own company that they want to shut down without appearing to do it themselves. The backroom deals are more evil than people realize.
Ugh! Like, I get the idea is "allegedly" to keep kids from accidentally viewing content that's not for them but shouldn't the solution be tl provide them with their own space and monitor that space rather than taking AWAY from adults who can and do enjoy that kind of stuff responsibly or AT LEAST GIVE THE ADULTS A SPACE. They can actually pay for that kind of stuff. Being an adult is already more difficult than fun. Why take away the few things you actually earn for becoming an adult OTHER THAN bills 🙄😮💨
Kids ain't buying shit on those sites anyways. It's the adults buying, or the adults buying for their kids. So really the censorship is just controlling what adults can consume.

The ironic thing is tencent would be better.
Bookwalker already has that option.
For the most part, Japan is on the move. Japan is about to have the worst environmental hazards in its history and the world is moving too slow for Japan to get out of it.
