WE NEED A MORE IMPACTFUL RB1. Thank you for your services Najee. You held us down when we had nothing your rookie year and having 1k yards a season. But it’s time you go my brother
Thank you Matt, Really great breakdown. When it comes to Pickens if traded or let go, they would have to get two receivers and a draft pick may not be very promising. Great show Matt
Appreciate the insight. Najee is a solid back and was misused under the previous OC doesn’t fit without a stronger O line or scheme. He’ll do well in a better fit. 0:53 Def agree that getting an opposite side db for Porter should be a key focus next to QB. Justin Fields has made a case for being the guy for 2-3 yrs for a couple of reasons … has made important strides this season under Smith in turnover/td ratio, mobility is valuable asset and will open up the offensive game in untold ways at this point. His running ability also reduces an evolving, young O line handicap. Steelers have a yr invested in him at almost no cost and he has shown he can win. They are not without offensive weapons and a ‘higher flying’ offense would not only be less predictable but more exciting even if losses. If Pickens stays, even with a tag, they will def need another strong #2. Curious what the market will be like for Higgins? An experienced pro like him would be excellent complement for Fields and could be easily moved into the #1 should Pickens and Steelers part ways adding continuity for 2026. Clock is running for utilizing defensive excellence. Interested in hearing next weeks QB show.
My frustration lies with Steelers never look for young coordinators from playoff teams coaching staffs. Try the Rams/Lions QB coach as the OC or the Vikings LB coach as your DC for example.
Why would any coach want be DC for the Steelers when it’s well known Tomlin is the de facto DC? You would just be the guy that takes all the blame when Tomlin fails.
If van Jefferson is on the team this coming year, he will be playing on the offense. For some reason, Arthur Smith likes this guy. Van Jefferson can walk
@@johnporter9073OP is spot on, they bring Jefferson back, he'll out snap someone MUCH more talented bc they're enamoured with the guy for whatever reason. If the team used Ben Skowronek how they used Jefferson last year, it would be completely understandable. He's actually a good blocker, the ball doesn't have hit him between the numbers to catch it, his separation metric is double what Jefferson's is, & his football IQ is 10x better. I've never seen a coach's son be utterly unable to recognize zone coverage, know when to sit their route down in zone, or not understand to break away from the closest defender's leverage when settling in a zone gap. It blows my mind that an NFL WR can get 700+ snaps with those deficiencies, better options on the roster, all while his dad is an NFL WR coach. He got the 48th most snaps of any WR & was 129th in cumulative EPA.
i agree with you on a lot of this especially your takes on james pierre and ben skowronek. I think what they brought to the table this year can be overlooked. Pierre isnt a wow guy but it looks like he improved compared to previous years and I wasnt as scared when he was in the game, and Skowronek always seemed like he could contribute more if they gave him more chances. They would be great depth pieces.
I imagine that you and other commentators are aware of this but I have yet to hear anyone acknowledge it; it may very well be a deep running back, deep receiver, deep cornerback draft but every player you let walk is another player you have to replace and each team only has so many draft picks. The things Kahn has to consider involve so much more than how deep the draft is at particular positions. I expect the Steelers to be very active in the free agent market in an attempt to lessen the pressure of having to draft for more positions than they can adequately fill in the draft.
Thanks for the breakdown Matt. This really helps a lot. It’s going to be discouraging if we can’t land another wide receiver in free agency. Whenever you get time, can you do a show on free agents that you would like to Steelers to sign? I’m not sure if you can do a long show about it so I guess maybe a segment but do we have any updates on Christian Kirk?
Najee never had a decent Oline and one of few who always played hard. Generally got the ball got the ball on predictive runs. Additionally, he never missed a game. His availability is his value. Hope he gets his just due somewhere else.
@mikedoyle2023 I've known Mike every since he was a baby he grew up right across the field from me the boy was good in baseball basketball and football everytime Russ throw him the ball he catches it those little 5-11 corners cannot jump with him he's a freak of athlete Steelers will never win another Superbowl with Tomlin
What I see from the outside looking in I am saying trade Pickens as soon as possible. E. Roberts I agree want his toughness and attitude so he can pass that on in the locker room and Ben Skowronek also seemed like a great team guy block first do anything needed with great attitude. Mccullum, Herbig, and Moon also. Warren I hope they can keep but definitely need a couple new RBs.
I loved Ben Skowronek. Every team should have a guy like that. Trading Pickens 100% has to happen as soon as it's allowable. You can't have that guy on this team constantly sabotaging them from week to week with laziness and his neg-head, downer shit.
Sign Harris and Wilson. They've already shown they're more interested in being loyal than making winning changes so just bring everybody back. Najee and Pat are buddies, thats enough reason for Art Rooney. It works for Tomlin and all his buddies.
Najee's "just a guy"... Serviceable, durable but criminally pedestrian. I want him gone simply because Tomlin is so infatuated with him I can't trust that he won't get the ball more than he should
I've said this and somebody asked me what I was blabbing about the other day, stating they drafted "2 OL in each of the last 2 years." My point was the line had been neglected since the end of Ben's era; why do they think the philosophy of getting rid of the ball so quickly was for? They kept that line together for too long and it showed. Then they drafted Najee, then Pickett the following year, doing minimal to the offensive line except for Dotson-which they played out of place only to see him go on to become a star in LA. Putting the cart before the horse isn't logical, especially when asking the horse to become a cow.
I love this topic Matt but I'm sure most of who does or does not come back is contingent on what the market will pay them. Case in point, You mention that Harris wants a "Stevenson" deal. Well what if the market falls off for running back because of what you mentioned about the draft. Is there a chance you could get him on a vet minimum deal? Would you take him at that point?
I'd rather them sign Warren to be the featurde back if he's capable of being one. I don't know if there are any good RBs in the draft this year but we'll need one.
Let him go. He isn't Henry. Trade Pickens before he holds out. Time for adults to be back in chargenin Pittsburgh. None of this behavior would fly with Dan Rooney

DO NOT BRING VAN JEFFERSON BACK! If they resign him, everyone knows he's going to take 10-20 snaps a game away from a younger, much more talented/dynamic guy, &/or an actual elite blocking WR like Ben Skowronek.
If they let Najee walk, wouldn’t they just go out and sign another RB in FA to pair with Jaylen….regardless if they plan on drafting a RB or not (which I hope they do.)
Per his usual, Tomlin missed the opportunity to see if Warren can be the #1 back this year. I'd say if he will take a reasonable contract, bring najee back as our #2 behind Warren, with them splitting 60-40 or 70-30. Najee could be good with better schemes and coaching maybe, but we'll have no idea because Tomlin won't get off this f-ing team.
Anybody who wants to let go of najee is insane he's the most durable RB in Steelers history he needs to lose 5 to 10 lbs and add quicknesd and speed to his game with this line getting better look at what Bell became after losing weight he was just like najee till he lost lbs if the drafts that good get rid of warren

The worst part about letting Najee walk (and they should) is that it's yet another 1st round pick that isn't contributing to the roster.
