    Pretty decent grass set-up for PR. Some discoloration here and there, and unfortunately, they are quite close to some tree roots which are obviously going to cause some issues related to fullness and resulting in patchiness. The lighting isn't helping too much, but it's all I can go off of. 6.8 grass rating. (Edit: PR self-reported some big root issues affecting mark time capabilities. New score is a 6.6)
    And I got bad news for Mandarins - upon further review, there are just some large patchiness issues and when stacking up against others, it's gotta drop even further.
    9.8 - Cavaliers DCCS IG video
    8.2 - Cadets AgedOut Video (elite, full, lush green grass but some weed and dandelion issues)
    8.0 - Blue Stars
    6.6 - Phantom Regiment
    6.2 - Mandarins

    I marched phantom in ‘21 and ‘22 on snare. The previous writer needed to let someone else take over due to some personal life stuff. My take is that I love Penland’s writing and Sammmons.’ This year was all about setting a foundation for the percussion section, so we should be excited for the future with this unique and capable Perc design team! Super fresh stuff

    3:43 Those little planks are actually wooden washboards that we sanded down at the corners to fit inside the drum 4 rims, and we played them like you would a guiro using innovative’s aluminum cookies (forgot the actual model lol). Parts were split A/B between who would actually do the guiro scrape and who would play the release note to get a more articulate and readable texture. It was a ton of fun to play with, def super challenging to get used to the changes in rebound between the different surfaces we play on in the opening section between the washboard, playing on rims with wood versus aluminum, actual drumheads etc. Also you mentioned the unique quad writing, Matt just knows how to write a quad book. Everything in the book around-wise had a purpose and felt absolutely incredible to play. Thanks for the vid, was fun to hear y’all’s thoughts on the book!! I’m on the end of the quadline out of frame most of the vid so just take my word for it that I am speaking from experience here

    I marched 22 and 23 on the quad line (center left, then center) and a few clarifications on rumors or things y'all mentioned.
    There was absolutely no talent for the majority of the audition process at least in the bass and quad room. Snare room had probably 11-12 quality players in the room, that obviously got weeded down to 9. The quad line had to wait until the first line of troop cuts as well as some recruitment. The bass line had a hole on 5 until april camp, and none of those members (besides 3 who marched crossmen) have ever marched dci before.
    Tyler Sammons wrote the front and Matt Penland wrote the battery.
    They focused a lot on technique early on in auditions and spring training, literally had an hour for november, december, and january camp at the beginning of camp strictly for technique. then we had an hour a day for the first 10 days just working on the technique and unifying it. It was definitely a Phantom 08- SCV 12 approach in that it had a little bit more aggression towards the drum than nowadays SCV but it still focused on the length of sound and fluidity. Dan Sailer is honestly amazing at teaching technique and making you think of different things in completely different angles.
    We were for sure playing easy stuff when we were behind the brass or facing backfield, but i guess there was a miscommunication between drill writers and music writers because there were a few parts of the book that were choppy and dense and hard, but was behind the back hash so you couldn't hear any of it. But that whole beginning part (starting at the bass drum puffy feature until the big drum 3 unison shot) was all backfield and unheard at all from the stands. Because of this, we never played some parts of our show in the lot because, quite frankly, they were pretty dirty because they were extremely hard, but nobody could hear them so we never worked on them.
    The quads were playing on bamboo washboards with an aluminum old school mallet. The snares used a ribbon crasher.
    I forgot the rest i was gonna say, but in case y'all needed more info on this season, i'll answer.

      Great job this season, you guys were a pleasure to watch in the lots in Rockford area. I caught you guys at the Concert in the Park and Show of Shows during early season. My only regret was not getting video of those lots, as I saw later that the Aged Out guys were doing reactions with no good PR clips to go off of. I'll try to get some good early footage of you guys next summer!

    • @aviatr9542
      @aviatr9542 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way your story about the talent pool early on struck a chord with my experience a decade ago in Open Class with 7th Regiment. Some food for thought for your next season:
      Our 2012 battery at 7th was very rookie-heavy, including me on the snareline (they had only 3 snares in April and desperately needed anyone for players. I was a quad player historically with almost no snare training besides my own self-training). That season was a huge learning curve for rookies, but in 2013 literally everyone came back (besides 2 ageouts). Plus I switched to quads to make the 3-man quadline become 4.
      In 2013 we raised the bar so much higher that our corps (who typically placed 7-9th overall in Open Class) got 4th in percussion that season. It was a standout year for percussion because everyone returned primed and ready to elevate the game.
      Hopefully your line of PR vets will return and you guys can have the same experience. Looking forward to next summer!

    Great video as always. Every time I come across one of these videos as a performer they’re super educational about what someone in the audience or in the lot might think. Obviously having played this music it’s easy to be my own worst critic. And when you’re in front of an audience it’s just as easy to think they notice the same ticks you do. So when you zoom out and actually listen to what a typical person in the lot would think, it’s actually really refreshing; you expect this hypercritical ball of negativity but instead it’s just two dudes enjoying a drumline. Sure yall definitely still hear and call out some ticks (because nobody’s perfect) but at the end of the day everyone’s here for the same reason: to enjoy music.
    Anyways I wanted to provide more insight on how Jeff prosperie Sr. Interacted with the group, just because it was one of my favorite parts about that staff team. Jeff knows that everyone else knows he was a judge, so a lot of what he does is just watch the drumline at the same angle a Brooks or a Davila would be at and then give comments from the perspective of “if I were judging this drumline, here’s what I would’ve said”. It was always so informative because it was yet again, putting the performer in the mind of someone else, who might be experiencing this music (that you’ve been playing for months) for the first time.
    And then you would have days where Rob Ferguson would come in to consult, and you would look up in the stands and see Tyler, Jeff and Rob, three generations of pretty wildly different phantom percussion leadership, all working together to make the group better. Combine that with the Rennicks or John Wooton coming in to just watch and support the percussion, and it was genuinely inspiring. I remember Jeff Propsperie Jr. once likened it to the avengers and I couldn’t think of a more apt description.

    Does anyone know if they played the Pearl CarbonCore snares or did they have wood shells? They seem to have that timbre that the CarbonCore had last year, which is a little less of a full-bodied sound in my opinion.

    • @evan_magill
      @evan_magill ปีที่แล้ว

      To my knowledge, the carboncores are a little bit less wood than the pearl championship series plus an additional lining of carbon fiber on the inside of the shell. I've marched newer dynasty drums as well as championship and carboncore pearls, and can say confidently carboncores are considerably heavier than the other two. The weight distribution is generally the same, just proportionally heavier. @@RVVDont

      @agedoutpodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for specific hardware, I’m not committed to any one thing. It’s a Pacific Rim kit and I have the Evans G2 coated heads on the Toms and EMAD heads on the kick. Cymbals on there right now are some practice Zildjan ZBTs I’ve had since 2000 when it was first bought, and a Wuhan China. I use those to teach lessons with and beat on. I have another set of Bosphorus cymbals if I’m going to play a gig or something.
