It's important to know how influential this band was to music...especially punk music, but not limited to that. Dave Grohl grew up in DC and loved Bad Brains. The Beastie Boys have a double B name because they loved the Bad Brains so much AND they started as a punk band. Ian Mackaye (Fugazi, Minor Threat, Teen Idles) and Henry Rollins (Black Flag, Rollins Band, Liar Guy) were TEENAGERS when they would brave the junkie squats and rough spots of DC to go to Bad Brains shows. The legend goes that Henry Rollins was finally urged to be a singer after HR (lead singer of Bad Brains) leapt on top of Henry...pinning him to the floor...and singing just inches from his face at a show at Madam's Organ (Adam's Morgan district....DEATH for white people) which was an art collective/junkie squat the band stayed at/played at for a while. Ian and Henry were relatively well-off white kids from the burbs, but they risked life and limb to be at those shows. Check DC in the Late 70s and Early 80s. You wouldnt let your teen go out to the bad neighborhoods at night!
Adams Morgan was NOT a scary/dangerous area in those years, I lived there. (And... just saying... this is the first time I've ever heard the Madams Organ venue connected with heroin use. Maybe, maybe not -- sometimes I was naive about stuff like that. ) Favorite Madam's Organ memory: going there with Jello Biafra and mutual friends to see the Band Psychodrama -- show ended with the singer stripping naked and running out onto 18th street to fall down on the sidewalk, begging passersby to kill him for Jesus. EDIT: The area got a bit dodgier after crack hit the streets, but that wasn't until the mid-to-late 80s.
Yep. I was at a bunch of those shows. I'm an old DC anti-racist skinhead. I've met Earl and H.R., hung out with the guys from Agnostic Front, Madball, Sheer Terror, Biohazard, etc.
The Bad Brains were, in fact, banned from the clubs in Washington, D.C., but this was after the song was recorded, and yielded the song, "At The Atlantis" (The Atlantis is now known as The 9:30 Club). However, BEFORE "Banned In D.C." was recorded, the band had been sent back from an attempted tour in the U.K. when clubs would not book them.
@@KH-ol6qz Hardcore pretty much started with Black Flag, when the first wave of punk morphed into New Wave, Goth and Post-Punk, and they decided to strip the music back down to its essence, just as Punk originally did, and for that reason, called it hard core. First true hardcore album was Middle Class’s debut, Out Of Vogue, beating Black Flag’s Nervous Breakdown EP by mere days. According to American Hardcore, and the bands interviewed, Black Flag brought hardcore to the East Coast when they toured through DC, New York and Boston. Bad Brains influenced pretty much everyone there, but they were a Jazz Fusion group from 76-79… after a friend introduced them to punk, they started messing around with it and in 1979, decided to officially become a punk band, naming themselves Bad Brains after the Ramones track, Bad Brain, from the album Road To Ruin, released Sept 1978.
I... think... the problem wasn't that clubs wouldn't book them, but they had trouble with visas/work permits -- they hadn't gotten the documents that would allow them to perform in paying venues? IIRC, the Damned invited them to go back with them after they played together in DC, but theey neglected to do the legal shit first.

I saw Bad Brains in NYC at the age of 17 at the A7 Club in the early 80s. I was a young Black girl wannabe bassist seeing a Black, Rasta Hardcore Punk band. It was a Revelation.

You know it's funny he's guys are highly underrated like the other guy commented but they do some Reggae to do Funk and actually before they were doing punk music they were actually doing Fusion yeah it's pretty amazing because you know talk about crossing over you know the cultural divide if there is one I mean these guys are all African American and when you look at them the way they dress you know they look like they're from Jamaica is pretty cool you know I got the red green yellow hats and all that stuff and Rasta hairdo and yeah they were always safe great band to listen to but I always had a soft spot for 80s Punk well at least early 80s Punk but yeah there from Washington DC
Hey what's up guys! Grading some South Florida! Bad Brains is just insane. Speed Punk metal at a million miles an hour. And the best thing is, that you can't understand any of the lyrics. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!

Great band love em, you have to remember this was 4 black guys (almost unheard of in punk back then) and they sprinkled the odd reggae song in between the hardcore songs. their second (third if you count the ROIR tape as an album) "I against I" was more a mix of soul and metal, still one of my favourites
The late great JERRY WILLIAMS in his 171 A studio/club in the NYC .Captured this and immortalized for us all to enjoy forever . Thank you BAD BRAINS.Thank you JERRY !!!
Great to see you coming back to bad brains. Their later stuff are less punk, you can go for something like soulcraft, rise, god of love and give thanks and praises.

Check out Fugazi if you really want to mine my youth and old age, Waiting Room would be the go to intro to Fugazi, studio version or the insane live version floating on YT... But I'm partial to Rend It or Instrument.
You need to watch the live version of this song. It's probably the single craziest show I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of crazy shows lol. It's certainly representative of the hardcore punk scene of 1982-ish.
That's Dr know on the guitar! So great to hear live!
They’re music was so hard to get ahold of on the west coast back in the day. I love that you guys are doing reactions to Punk music.
I always loved Bad Brains.
You never knew what to expect, raging fast or really slow reagge like.
I was waiting for this. Saw them many times.
Hey what's up guys! Grading some South Florida! Bad Brains is just insane. Speed Punk metal at a million miles an hour. And the best thing is, that you can't understand any of the lyrics. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
I was a punk and, yep, random crabs and juicy stuff. You got it.
Was the first black punk band there from the Bronx there from we’re from in
You can just see the fists, blood and spit flying.
They were just finding their special talents on this album
Oh yes, that's great stuff now, they were just awesome, also one of my favourites, thank you.
def recommend watching the some of the cbgb live show from these guys, still gives me the chills. hr resides around baltimore and was still showing up to shows up till a few years ago
Great band love em, you have to remember this was 4 black guys (almost unheard of in punk back then) and they sprinkled the odd reggae song in between the hardcore songs. their second (third if you count the ROIR tape as an album) "I against I" was more a mix of soul and metal, still one of my favourites
Hi Mel !
@@marcharley6465 lol Just knew you'd be sniffing around black flag and bad brains songs
Real punk rock OGs
I saw these guys a couple of times, man they were insane.
The late great JERRY WILLIAMS in his 171 A studio/club in the NYC .Captured this and immortalized for us all to enjoy forever . Thank you BAD BRAINS.Thank you JERRY !!!
OHHHHHH!!! You're moving into punk now. Welcome. Deathklok!!!! Murmaider!!!!
Hardcore punk it's like youtube on 2x and more aggressive.
I would also try the Descendent's song Hope or I'm not a Loser
That's one of my favorite Punk-Bands from back then - their "Rock for Light" album is a classic. Saw them on their reunion show in Cologne/Germany.
Great to see you coming back to bad brains. Their later stuff are less punk, you can go for something like soulcraft, rise, god of love and give thanks and praises.
