Hi Steve, I tried a seven string job once and very quickly put it back on the shop wall. When I was gigging our bassist played a five string bass and even that scrambled my brain a little. Every sound check he used to ask me to play a few notes so he could go out front and hear it and every time I (insert suitable word!!) it up! I wouldn't have a clue where to even start with eight.
Ha! Yeah several years ago, I actually did have a 7 string for a bout 2 weeks, (think it was a Dean) probably played it for a grand total of 20mins and sold it 😂. I do have a 5 string sire bass though - I spent a lot of time with that so that doesn't throw me as much, but it's still pretty rare to actually use the extra low notes. A bit like the the dusty end of the guitar 😜
Steve, I tip my hat to you. That’s dedication to music education when you buy a guitar and commit to learning to Djent with your student who likes Sleep Token. So what kind of guitar does he have? Curious how your HB stacks up, lol. You horrified the metal heads by playing funk on this guitar, lol. 🤣🤘🏻🎸 I would be curious to try a seven string acoustic (they exist!) or electric, but 8 and 9 strings are just weird to me. I know people make some epic music with them, but I don’t see why the extra strings are needed when it’s possible to do the same thing on a guitar with 6 strings. I regularly use my Low E (or whatever it’s tuned to) as a drone string. Maybe you can help us understand the deal as you go through the process. I feel sorry that you’ll have to restring that monstrosity, but it’s really cool that you’re going out of your lane here. Music is about exploring and trying new things keeps it from getting stale. Maybe you’ll join the next new Djent band!
Thank ya so much Marsha! 😀🙏 My Pupil has a Strandberg and an Ormsby. He recently got another 8 string Ibby single cut too 😂🙈 So I had no choice (It's too easy to find excuses to buy guitars sometimes 😜). As for how the HB stacks up - it's all so alien to me, I find it difficult to tell. I did get to try a 7 string Furch acoustic at 42Gear Street - that was very cool too 😎👍
I think it's great that a teacher will go to these lengths to help a student. The student obviously has a passion for the type of music that Sleep Token play and shoehorning him into something else, might kill his desire to learn guitar. That's fantastic. If anyone comes for lessons with a harp, I think you should recommend they look elsewhere, although Thomann do sell harps.
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 Although it might also be a case of... I can always find an excuse to get another guitar 😜 But seriously, yeah, I did want to make the lesson time more effective for both of us, but I was also a bit curious about the 8 string stuff after seeing the students guitar 😁 He's already a great player and waaaay ahead of me with the 8 string stuff 😂👍
The radius is not 12", it is 350mm (around 13.75") going off of Thomann - However I think it may be misrepresented on the site, 13.75" is quite round for an 8-string. I think this is probably closer to 15.75" (400mm) which would fit!
you handled the low notes well. i don't usually tune down to f#1, i prefer a nice light g1 personally, but if you're planning on dropping it to e1 and a1 you are going to need a string tension calculator to choose some heavier gauges even with the fanned scale. i would also consider adding more fret markers below the stock ones so you can tell what strings you're playing. i exclusively play 7 strings and still get lost in the mess of wire at times
Ah! That's a great idea with the fret markers! 😀👍 I actually have a set of fret look ones I can chuck on - cheers 👍 I do want to keep the overall tension kinda similar as/is. You're right the lowest e1 & a1 are a bit floppy atm. I've got It comes stock with 9-65. But I got a 10-74 set, So i'm just gonna replace the bottom 2 strings and hope for the best 😜👍
@@stevecassidyguitar i should've elaborated that you need a good tension to keep the tuning stable, a 90 would work better for that e1 on that scale length and maybe around a 68 for a1. it's not a necessity to go super heavy if you can work a tuner, you'll be fine with the heavier set you already have if you remember to check if the tuning's drifted every couple days or so
Thank you for making me feel so weclome. This was really interesting to see how you handle it , I hope that student has paid you more than £211 in tuition fees , or this was really daft. I couldn't get on with these either which is why most of my guitars are baritones not >6 string stuff. It's just quite a bit more to remember as you'll discover as you go. Have fun.
Oh yeah without a doubt! I've been teaching this pupil since he was 8 years old, he must be 17 now - Great player too! I'm not taking the credit, he practices lots of other stuff off his own back. Those guys are always become the best players 😀👍 To be fair, It's too easy for me to find an excuse to get another guitar 🙈 But I was a bit curious about the 8 string stuff too. Cheers mate! 😀🙏
Had the RB458 in the straight Single scale Version. I also Tried the low strings tunes to A and E to accompany myself with bass Tones, but i didn't get along with the concept of 8/7-Strings.
😂👍 I'll have to keep this one until July next year at least tho 😬 Apologies on the St Modern BTW - It's still got your name on it - but I'm unbelievably swamped atm. Never been busier 🤯
You know what I'd do with an 8 string guitar ?, take two strings off and make it a 6 string !!. Seriously cool looking guitar and you were playing some cool stuff once you got used to it 👍😃
I just tried a 7 string for the first time in a guitar center, its wild how even that one extra string kind of destroys your muscle memory, I can only imagine the eight string.
Nice! 😀👍 I think less strings is the smart way to go 🤓👍 Although you could glue 3 of them together and have a 9 string abomination... 🤔 and no friends 😂

😂👍 Great point! Funny thing is - the pupil I'm working with (reason I got the 8 string) is also using a Quad Cortex and doing other drop tunings on that - Just when I thought I could keep up! 😂🙈
Cheers mate! That's just my Guitar storage dining room on the east wing 😁 But yeah this kid is a great player - I've learned a lot over the years to try to leave my ego at the door. I'm always learning stuff from my pupils. Which could be interpreted as "I suck at my job" 😂👍
Just saw Tony Levin playing the Chapman Stick..the bass side anyway...his backup players were Steve Vai Adrian Bellow and Danny Carey...Beat... but i liked your demo too🫡
@michaelbelliveau8755 oh you actually saw tony Levin proper live!? 😃 Nice one mate! Tommy Emmanuel too! I've seen him live a few times - incredible! Only 6 strings tho? What a wuss 🙄🫤 😜
"What do you do on an 8 string guitar" get Carpal Tunnel lmao playing a 7 string with a fairy wide neck was too much for me after a while. Still don't have a 5 string bass for similar reasons. Seriously though, look into the Boss music in Sonic Frontiers which is played in a stupid low tuning, Undefeatable is actually incredible, I play the riff on bass.
I can totally see that - I don't think I could play something like this for a gig - not just because it would be completely unsuitable 😂 but 2-3 hours on that would be a killer for the wrist I reckon. Maybe I just need to address my "technique" 😜
Play slide on the bottom two and normal stuff on the others😅😅😅😅😅. Such a flat neck needs a tone bar😂😂😂😂Of course, Steve, the biggest problem will be finding a gig bag😂
That doesn't sound complicated at all 😂👍 Luckily.... The Thomann Deluxe Electric Gig Bag I already had fit like a glove. I love those gig bags - only like £25, has 20mm padding and fit's every solid body I've thrown at it (or in it) 😜
My take: treat like going on holiday to a place with different weather, different language and different ways of doing things. Have fun with it. Explore it without judgement - get emotional reactions out of the way. If some want to chug and solo n scream with it well ... ?
That's a great mindset mate - love it! 😎👌 I do have to do the chuggy chuggs for the lessons currently - Not really my thing, but I have to admit it's still fun 😀👍
I think I have seen them before on Etsy or something 😁👍 I know most people won't get the reference. It's from a Scottish comedy TV series called "Still Game" a bit of Del Boy Schtick in that particular episode. Apologies If you already knew and I over explained 😬👍
@stevecassidyguitar no apologies required, it's just amusing. Loving your channel by the way and I hope it goes from strength to strength. Found it via the John Robson channel. All the best.
I live in a block of flats where the fourth floor is labelled as the 'forth floor', it's in London so definitely nothing to do with the firth of forth in Scotland!
Oh no - I definitely won't be changing the pickups. My ears can't tell the difference between what's good and not, when it comes to high gain, high output kinda sounds anyway 😂👍
I wouldn't change the pickups either... because 8 poles are hard to find , the pitch between poles varies without enough explanation, and they're more expensive than the guitar.
Things to do with an 8 string guitar: . Play happy birthday on the thinnest string . Play the fattest string 010011000111000011110001110011010 . Record an entire album of 60 minutes with just an f# minor open chord . Detune the guitar to be extra edgy and jazzy and progressive. Doesn't need to sound good either. . Do what every reasonable 8 string guitar player would do: tune the entire guitar to the same f# note and strum away. Extra points if you use a slider. . Shave.
@jumpingman8160 🤣👍 Funny you should mention... Straight after the unboxing and test we watched batteries not included 😎👌 A memory I'll cherish for weeks 🤩
Not intentionally - But tbf I don't have like a proper high gain preset. I probably need to make some sort of Mesa or 5150-esque preset for this kinda stuff. My "high gain" stuff is a Vox type amp with 2 stacked overdrives 😂🙈
I've setup a couple of Bass guitars for a friend recently and I was playing it like a guitar and damn it was odd. I can only hope he doesn't go for one of these .. I'll have to grow some extra long fingers 🤣
@ I love it. Just a fun thing to have. And it means I get to pretend to be Bob Smith from the Cure in my garage or spare room. With less hair and lipstick!!
Had that in a seven string version and the leads wouldn’t go into the jack socket, sent it back and was still waiting on a replacement 7 months. Still wasn’t available so got my money back, I don’t know why the wait was so long👎👎👎
Yeeesh! That sux 👎👎. This one isn't perfect either, had a wee paint chip on the headstock and some finish imperfections, I didn't notice until the next day. It's workable though and pretty much just a teaching aid for now 👍
Step one , take off two strings or alternatively get yourself down to the gym and start working on those hand, arm and finger muscles so you can master those bar chords. In your case however, bearing in mind your own statements about your small hands, just take off two strings.
Wow! 🤯That was a bit mental! Cheers 😂👌 Although I didn't see that 8th string getting used much. Maybe not even at all 🤔 I was multitasking though - Might have missed it 😜

As for how the HB stacks up - it's all so alien to me, I find it difficult to tell.
I did get to try a 7 string Furch acoustic at 42Gear Street - that was very cool too 😎👍
I wouldn't call sleeptoken djent. Defo heavy but not djent
@@Cpmnk I don't know what to call them, all I know is I'm kinda scared of em 😂👍
I think it's great that a teacher will go to these lengths to help a student. The student obviously has a passion for the type of music that Sleep Token play and shoehorning him into something else, might kill his desire to learn guitar. That's fantastic. If anyone comes for lessons with a harp, I think you should recommend they look elsewhere, although Thomann do sell harps.
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 Although it might also be a case of... I can always find an excuse to get another guitar 😜
But seriously, yeah, I did want to make the lesson time more effective for both of us, but I was also a bit curious about the 8 string stuff after seeing the students guitar 😁
He's already a great player and waaaay ahead of me with the 8 string stuff 😂👍
8 string, 4 octaves. there is a lot of notes to choose there
😂 Too many imo. 8 string guitars should come with extra fingers
I was not expecting THAT!! 🤣🤣🤣
I think even I was expecting the new ST Modern (non plus) 😂👍
@@stevecassidyguitar 😂
The radius is not 12", it is 350mm (around 13.75") going off of Thomann - However I think it may be misrepresented on the site, 13.75" is quite round for an 8-string. I think this is probably closer to 15.75" (400mm) which would fit!
Whoops my bad! Apologies 😬 Thanks for pointing that out 👍
12" always feels too flat for me as/is anyway 😂
you handled the low notes well. i don't usually tune down to f#1, i prefer a nice light g1 personally, but if you're planning on dropping it to e1 and a1 you are going to need a string tension calculator to choose some heavier gauges even with the fanned scale. i would also consider adding more fret markers below the stock ones so you can tell what strings you're playing. i exclusively play 7 strings and still get lost in the mess of wire at times
Ah! That's a great idea with the fret markers! 😀👍
I actually have a set of fret look ones I can chuck on - cheers 👍
I do want to keep the overall tension kinda similar as/is. You're right the lowest e1 & a1 are a bit floppy atm. I've got It comes stock with 9-65. But I got a 10-74 set, So i'm just gonna replace the bottom 2 strings and hope for the best 😜👍
@@stevecassidyguitar i should've elaborated that you need a good tension to keep the tuning stable, a 90 would work better for that e1 on that scale length and maybe around a 68 for a1. it's not a necessity to go super heavy if you can work a tuner, you'll be fine with the heavier set you already have if you remember to check if the tuning's drifted every couple days or so
@@Hyperlink1337 Cheers mate _I'll try out what I've got here, can always go heavier if needs be - Cheers 😀👍
Those guys are always become the best players 😀👍
To be fair, It's too easy for me to find an excuse to get another guitar 🙈 But I was a bit curious about the 8 string stuff too.
Cheers mate! 😀🙏
Well mate,, if it doesn't work out, you can always take her out to St Andrews and go surfing 😅😁👏
Ha! 😂👌 Funny you should mention - I'm going to St Andrews tomorrow 🎸🏄♂️
Had the RB458 in the straight Single scale Version. I also Tried the low strings tunes to A and E to accompany myself with bass Tones, but i didn't get along with the concept of 8/7-Strings.
I hear ya mate - I still can't get it 😂🙈

Ha! Completely unintentionally - cheers mate 😂🙏
I want the 7 string version, cool vid...
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 I reckon you deserve a 7 string - You've been good all year! 😀👍
I'm actually game to buy this off you too 😂😂😂 this is right up my street
Scratch that at £211 I'd be as well getting a new one.
😂👍 I'll have to keep this one until July next year at least tho 😬
Apologies on the St Modern BTW - It's still got your name on it - but I'm unbelievably swamped atm. Never been busier 🤯
That Funk Noodle was.... Funky AF 😎
Ha! Cheers mate 😀🙏
I lost the timing a bit a couple of times - I'm just gonna blame that on the 8 string though - along with every other mistake 😂👍
You know what I'd do with an 8 string guitar ?, take two strings off and make it a 6 string !!. Seriously cool looking guitar and you were playing some cool stuff once you got used to it 👍😃
Ha! Sounds like a smart move 😂👍
Thank ya kindly mate 🙏 I'm still pretty much at a loss with it 🙈
Very Cool, Thankyou Steve. WOW.... Unexpected ..... Yes cut 2..... or 3 (Go Keef) strings off ..... Enjoy ...... Cheers
Ha! Cheers mate 😀🙏
I think Keef has the right idea - the less strings the better! (Go Formby!) 😜
I just tried a 7 string for the first time in a guitar center, its wild how even that one extra string kind of destroys your muscle memory, I can only imagine the eight string.
7 strings are for weaklings! 🧐
I can say that now I'm a proper 8 string gang member 😎👌
😜
Jokes of course 😁
I'm still struggling with 6 strings 😂👍
@stevecassidyguitar aren't we all
Far too many strings, i would classify that as a guitar shaped harp. best of luck with it. We'll see it on the next Coconut Grove video.🤣🤣🤣
Guitarp? 🤷♂️
That would be so funny, to just pull that beast out the gig bag at the next wedding gig 😂
and now... Brown eyed girl... 🤣
It`s called `flip flop blue chameleon` but to me it looks like green into blue, thats the point!
It looks green into purple in real life - No Blue in sight 🤷♂️
I've been thinking of getting or making a 3 string cigar box (with a resonator) 🤠
Nice! 😀👍
I think less strings is the smart way to go 🤓👍
Although you could glue 3 of them together and have a 9 string abomination... 🤔 and no friends 😂
This was a very funny video mate. I think a lot of us here watching you were in the same boat. Ie ‘What do ya do with that?’ 🤭. Very good content. Well done again 👏
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 It's now a couple of months later - I'm not much further forward with it to be honest 😂
@ haha I’d be surprised if you were man tbh I’m still baffled haha. Btw great content lately. You changing it up recently (on purpose or not haha) has worked. And btw don’t get too caught up in the whole TH-camr Standard audio and visual etc - I’m sure many woukd agree when I say we tune in for you and how you conduct yourself etc etc. Your personality and your originality. There are many channels out there with state of the art sound and visual etc but they don’t got what you got - the originality 👏👏👏. Thanks again!
“Oh, that’s not right…” - me, on a six string guitar
😂👌
Yup I can relate to that one too 😁👍
What do I do with an 8 string? Swap it for a Digitech Drop maybe?
😂👍
Great point! Funny thing is - the pupil I'm working with (reason I got the 8 string) is also using a Quad Cortex and doing other drop tunings on that - Just when I thought I could keep up! 😂🙈
Dang, Sleep Token looks huge!!!
I'm kinda scared of them 😬
Impressive that the student is helping the teacher...wish I had you!
That is an impressive dining room...
Cheers mate! That's just my Guitar storage dining room on the east wing 😁
But yeah this kid is a great player - I've learned a lot over the years to try to leave my ego at the door. I'm always learning stuff from my pupils. Which could be interpreted as "I suck at my job" 😂👍
Awesome video Steve have a great weekend also I have a fungal infection in my head ❤😢
Oh no! 😬 Very sorry to hear that! I hope you're on the mend soon mate 🤞
Thanks I did went to the emergency doctor on Friday then we went to the pharmacy to get the cream for the head
Just saw Tony Levin playing the Chapman Stick..the bass side anyway...his backup players were Steve Vai Adrian Bellow and Danny Carey...Beat... but i liked your demo too🫡
C'mon! ... I can't compete with that! 😂 I can't even play an E chord here ! 😂
@stevecassidyguitar the night after we saw Tommy Emmanuel..but he only had six strings..what a week😃
@michaelbelliveau8755 oh you actually saw tony Levin proper live!? 😃
Nice one mate!
Tommy Emmanuel too!
I've seen him live a few times - incredible!
Only 6 strings tho?
What a wuss 🙄🫤
😜
Maybe Death Country/Funk is cool on an 8-string🙃
😂 I'll see if I can find a Spotify playlist - Cheers! 😁👍
Ignore the fan & you can play, but the too many strings I can't help you with....
This guitar is my one and only fan 😁👍
But yeah, I'd argue 6 strings is too many - and Keef agrees! 😜
"What do you do on an 8 string guitar" get Carpal Tunnel lmao
playing a 7 string with a fairy wide neck was too much for me after a while.
@@stevecassidyguitar try learning Undefeatable from Sonic Frontiers on it - incredible riff!
@@SisterRose I'm still learning how to hold it 😂👍
Can an 8 string blues?? Apparently really well surprisingly
Ha! Cheers mate 😃🙏I thought about having "blues hack plays an 8 string" as the title 😂
Play slide on the bottom two and normal stuff on the others😅😅😅😅😅. Such a flat neck needs a tone bar😂😂😂😂Of course, Steve, the biggest problem will be finding a gig bag😂
That doesn't sound complicated at all 😂👍
Luckily....
I do have to do the chuggy chuggs for the lessons currently - Not really my thing, but I have to admit it's still fun 😀👍
Use it as a cheese grater 😮
I'd definitely have more luck with that 😂👍
I can only count to six (strings)…ain’t that Gr8!!!
6 is plenty 😂👍
It looks very cool but I would sound a complete mess on that thing 😂
As did I 😂👍
Haha definitely unexpected on this channel but rock n roll!
9 string next week of course 😜

It's ok mate - You're Tele's right 😅👍
Tele's are always right 😎👍
Except for the lefty ones
Where do I get the 'Weclome' door mat?
I think I have seen them before on Etsy or something 😁👍
I know most people won't get the reference.

@ Well, that’s certainly going the extra mile, or two strings! 👍
Wouldn’t change pickups unless your going to have it as a main Guitar
Oh no - I definitely won't be changing the pickups. My ears can't tell the difference between what's good and not, when it comes to high gain, high output kinda sounds anyway 😂👍
I wouldn't change the pickups either... because 8 poles are hard to find , the pitch between poles varies without enough explanation, and they're more expensive than the guitar.
this looks cool. thanks for sharing.

Nut still pretty clueless what to do with it 🙈
Dude, now I need to buy one
You totally deserve one mate! 😂👍
What to do on an 8 string guitar…
Head to the sea and ride a wave 🏄🏽♂️
Once that pupil leaves school next year, that might be a good shout 😂👍
Things to do with an 8 string guitar:
. Play happy birthday on the thinnest string
. Play the fattest string 010011000111000011110001110011010
. Record an entire album of 60 minutes with just an f# minor open chord
. Detune the guitar to be extra edgy and jazzy and progressive. Doesn't need to sound good either.
. Do what every reasonable 8 string guitar player would do: tune the entire guitar to the same f# note and strum away. Extra points if you use a slider.
. Shave.
😂🤣😂🤣
Pure Gold!
Thanks for sharing mate! 😂👌
