I came REALLY close to mentioning that! There’s also a Stargate SG1 episode that rips it off too, as I understand it. It’s also very similar to an episode of OG Battlestar Galactica, but that came before Enemy Mine.
One of my teachers in school devoted a whole over 2 hour double lesson to watching and discussing Enemy Mine, and it is one of the big childhood memories i have, kinda one of the experiences that moulded me into the man i am today, at 43. I don't know if it was the setting i first watched it in that made it such a profound moment for me or just the film itself, or both, but when the lights in the classroom turned on, everyone in the room was either hurriedly rubbing tears away from their face, or just sat in silence staring at the end credits looking affected. I really rate my teacher for doing that you know. First time i saw enemy mine i didn't notice the kinda "straight to video" vibe that some of the effects looked like because i was totally hooked on the story and the characters it didn't matter, or even REGISTER! That is the sign of a good movie. I could go on for hours so I'll just say i enjoyed your review a lot. Fairplay, I've just subbed too so im off to see what else is on here. Safe mate
I read somewhere that Louis Gosset Jr.'s portrayal of Jeriba Shigan was so iconic that even today there are actors who are taught to study the alien gestures and mannerisms he imbued the character with because he's widely considered the gold standard for acting as an alien. I'd also recommend that fans of the movie pick up The Enemy Papers, which is the trilogy written by Longyear and expands far beyond the film (without including too many spoilers I do feel I should say that, no, it does not include a literal mine as part of the ending so be prepared for a few surprises and emotional gut-punches) and further explores the themes of Enemy Mine with the same heart and soul (with some additional world-building and a fascinating look into Drac society). I've read the trilogy about as many times as I have other sci-fi favorites like Dune or Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy and rank them up there as some of the finest sci-fi fiction written in the era.
Enemy mine is and will always be one of my all-time favorites. I grew up watching it, and today I actually learned a few new things about it I didn’t know that make me appreciate it even more.
Gossett saw a homeless boy on GMA in the 80s. He took him as his ward being so moved by his story. The lad grew up and went to college due to Lou's parentage.
There were so many unexpected moments in the movie that made it better than the typical enemies facing off storyline. This includes the raising of an alien child, and once again getting thrown, literally and figuratively, back into the conflict. My main criticism is that the human's motivation for the war isn't tempered by an equivalent alien one.
I stumbled on this movie one day and it was great. It is a testament to the triumph of the Drac spirit over adversity, hatred, and prejudice. 4:27 yes. he is the heart and sould of the movie.
What a surprise choice! I think I've only seen this film twice in my life but it strangely holds a special place. First as part of a Saturday night VHS marathon back in the 80s alongside Legend and Krull. Then I seen it being used in a Family Guy joke and promptly grabbed a dvd copy. So underrated! Way better than Dune. Cool Sci fi elements but just a heart warming story overall I thought. I need to dig out that dvd 😁
you cannot hide Mr Plinkket we know where you went. and I have always loved this movie. they should re release it today. we need a character driven story of humanity more now than we ever have.
This movie is pretty great, but the scene at the beginning with the sandworm and turtle creature _traumatized me_ as a child. Having not watched the movie in several years I recently looked for that scene, thinking that it probably wouldn't hold up and look silly for today's standards, and boy, how wrong I was. It still looks as terrifying as it did back then.
Really good review once again. I remember watching this when I young the 80's, and being disappointed because of the way it pushed as being full of action. Then watching it a few years later and being impressed. I bought the short story collection to read, which I believe is called Manifest Destiny. Keep the good work going.
I rented this movie from our local pic-a-flic at least a dozen times in the 80s. Thank you for shedding more light on this wonderful tale of cameraderie.
Love this movie. I own the bluray., no special features of course. Such a good movie I’ve always wanted more so few months ago I decided I wanted to read the novella it was based on, only to discover that it was the first of a trilogy. So I ordered the hardcover of all 3 in 1 titled the enemy papers, but unfortunately it was lost in the mail and I never received it. Good review by the way.
I have it in on a VHS tape I recorded off the TV. I have always liked it. There are things we quote like something being zurky proof and Mickey Mouse being a dope. More people should see it.
I would definitely be down for a remake that is more faithful to the book. I absolutely love this flick, but I could see a remake being just as good if done right.
Great review. The movie is classic and holds up today. The story also similar to “Hell in the Pacific”. A John Boorman film with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. I don’t agree about Maurice Jarre score being subpar. It is minimalist, yes, but when orchestra soars - it soars beautifully. And the main theme is really good and memorable. And not overused. Main title atmospheric opening is great too.
Great review again! And a movie I should watch again and possess! I had seen it when it originally came out, and was kinda 'meh' about it. Having gotten acclimatized to Blade Runner, Alien and such, Enemy Mine just seemed weak in comparison. And to this day, it's hard for me not to compare it to Robinson Caruso On Mars. But thanks for the review, as its put a new appreciation to Enemy Mine for me when I see the clips and performances now. Lou is truly amazing in it at least!
Excellent movie. I must say, though, in response to your opening comments showing a clip from MILLENNIUM over comments about clunkiness ... I LOVE MILLENNIUM. It has everything; time travel, clunky robot guys, people in giant test tubes (one of whom has her face being held on by twine), AND Cheryl Ladd ... what more could a reasonable person ask?
Whoa whoa whoa! Don't get me wrong; I too LOVE Millennium, and I have plans in place to cover it in a couple of months. That's why I had a clip ready to go.
@@TheUnapologeticGeek Didn't mean my remark in anger (though apparently that's how it read .... sadly, brief messages leave little room for vicissitudes), but good to read that there's an upcoming installment involving this movie. Looking forward to it. (People in test tubes holding faces on with twine!!!)
I love this film dearly. I watched it on VHS countless times as a kid in the early 90s. The score, costumes, set design and of course Gossit Jr are all outstanding. It's unfortunate that it never really gained a mainstream audience but I'm fine with it staying a true cult film. The only bummer is I believe it's leaving Disney Plus for some reason...so the younger gen of film lovers will have a harder time finding it.
I think this movie is an absolutely riveting character study with three main characters, one human, framed by low-effort generic space opera rubbish I'd expect from a contemporary TV show. If the entire film "clicked" as well as the main performances and dialog, it would be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it doesn't.
I loved this film. Darwitch. Zamies. Louis Gosset eas great. It was obviously a race lesson. Maonase, My moma wants to fly jets! Iron Eagle ess another good Louis movie.
Randle here in Texas! Fun fact! Star Trek TNG S3E7 "The Enemy" completely ripped off "Enemy Mine"!
I came REALLY close to mentioning that! There’s also a Stargate SG1 episode that rips it off too, as I understand it.
It’s also very similar to an episode of OG Battlestar Galactica, but that came before Enemy Mine.
Oh, and there’s also an episode of DS9 with Sisko and Dukat that STARTS the same way, but goes in a decidedly different direction. 😁
@@TheUnapologeticGeek No doubt! As you mentioned in your video, it's a well used story line in many different genre of film and TV.
I remember that episode!
It happened in enterprise too
Seriously, this is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.
I’m shocked this movie isn’t much more popular. I love the ending.

This film has heart. Sadly lacking in movies today. IMHO. Great review.
One of my absolute memorable movies from the 80s
One of the few US sci-fi films shown in the USSR
and it was well loved over there.
Cool! I didn't know that.
Enemy mine is and will always be one of my all-time favorites. I grew up watching it, and today I actually learned a few new things about it I didn’t know that make me appreciate it even more.
Surprised "Hell in the Pacific"(1968) was not mentioned. It was the first thing that came to me mind. Very close in story points.
Gossett saw a homeless boy on GMA in the 80s. He took him as his ward being so moved by his story. The lad grew up and went to college due to Lou's parentage.
I seriously thought I could not admire the man more, but I’d never heard that story and now I do.
Another interesting sci-fi movie from the mid 80s. Decent story , good chemistry between Quaid & Gossett

Great recap. Saw this as a child in the 80’s and was greatly influenced for the better by it.
Wonderful movie.

I liked Enemy Mine. It has a good story to it. Too bad it got lost in the shuffle. Thank you for posting.
I love this story

Same! I have vivid memories of that scene scaring the bejeezus out of me when I was little.

I got my copy off of Amazon
@@TheUnapologeticGeek Thank you I will look for it there.
Such a great movie. Rest in peace Louis Gossett Jr.

Thank you! 👍👍
Great review of one of my favorite movies
why is this channel so small?
Great job as always, sir. Also one of my childhood favorites.
merci a vous ;)

Would love to see a remake of this movie and show more of the meeting with the High Council

you couldn't get as fine an actor as Louis Gosset though. he literally forged this movie
I actually remember going to the theater more than once to see this movie and would like to see a re make of it too.
I really enjoyed this review. I found it entertaining and insightful. Well done!

The race the moclans on the Orville reminds me of the Dracs here
It's never failed to bring me to tears! Not once!
Wonderful movie! The book 'The Enemy Papers' is great. It includes the back story of the Dracs and what happens to Davig and Zammis afterwards.

Malvito I didn’t take it as an angry comment. No worries!
It’s like, movies my parents use to show me, the TH-cam channel
Barry Longyear's novella was more satisfying IMHO.

Louis Gosset jr. The man who voiced the Vortigaunts in HalfLife 2. It doesn't get better than this.
Can you do a Review of "Richard III" (1995)?
Sea lab did a take on this movie where the drac was a scorpion lol and Murphy was davidge
Definitly needs a good Remake !
This is one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies unfortunately the budget was terrible I wish somebody would have put more money into it
This is an outstanding movie.
Twilight time released a decent blu-ray transfer 📀

How do they maintain a population?
I don't get how the alien species can increase in numbers, if the parent dies to produce a single child.
I don’t think the parent normally dies. Jeriba had complications that killed him.
